We stayed at the Crowne Plaza for 3 nights over the Motor Show weekend, paying 374 swiss francs per night including breakfast. The public areas of the hotel are very nice, modern and airy, and the members ofd staff we encountered on the check in and concierge desks were all very efficient and helpful. Our room was in the older part of the hotel. I didn't realise until we arrived that there was a newer wing to the hotel, and if I had done, would definitely have tried to blag an upgrade. The corridors in the new wing certainly gave the impression that the rooms would have been an improvement on the older wing rooms. Saying that we had no particular complaint about our room. It was fairly spacious with enough room for 2 double beds, which was convenient as we were travelling with our 3 year old daughter, and it saved us having an awkward extra bed cluttering up the room. The furnishings were obviously not that modern but still appeared in good condition, unlike in some hotels of this age. The bathroom had a bidet, bath with shower above, all serviceable althought the non-white suite took a bit of getting used to! The corridors outisde our room were quite dark with wood panelling and perhaps had seen better days, not that they caused us any concern in reality. I am sure we would have been happier in the nice new wing, but we were still fairly content with what we had been given. Our room had no particular view to speak of, just over the footpath by the side of palexpo, although on the last Sunday of Motor Show weekend this meant a ringside seat of all the cars leaving the exhibition!
We visited the pool twice during our stay with our daughter, i must admit felt a bit awkward - everywhere was very quiet and serene, and I didn't feel all that relaxed in the pool with a noisy toddler. The clientele did seem to be very business orientated and I felt that we were frowned upon a little. The pool itself was very modern, although the changing areas weren't the best I have seen - nowhere to get changed privately which is always a plus with a small child who would like to explore while you are getting changed! The pool was large if a little cool - again it was geared for people doing laps and I felt a bit in the way.
We dined in Carlights on two nights. On both occasions we opted for the a la carte menu. We both agreed the food was of good quality although we weren't tempted by the buffet (at 60 francs) which didn't seem to offer many appealing main courses. The desserts were from the buffet however and were very nice. On both evenings we had a main course and a dessert, our daughter just having a childs main course, and we spent between 90 and 100 francs on food each evening. The wine we chose cost 40 francs and so I think the value for money was OK. On our final evening after a long day out we had two pizzas in our room, and these were very nice, costing us just over 60 francs altogether. i didn't think this was bad for room service. The breakfasts were vast with plenty of choice.
The hotel is really convenient for Palexpo and the airport ( a complimentary shuttle if available every 20 minutes). To get into Geneva, a short walk up the footpath by the side of the hotel takes you to the main road where bus no 5 takes you right into the centre. The information desk in the hotel will give you complimentary bus passes for the duration of your stay.
In short we were more than happy with the Crowne Plaza. Our rate wasn't terribly good value, but this was probably due to it being Motor Show time. The service was good, rooms comfortable, food good quality at a fair cost, and the hotel is convenient. My only reservation was that with a small child I wasn't made to feel terribly welcome. The clientele in the restaurant seemed to resent a child being there, businessmen were there with their laptops or reading books, and anybody who made a slight noise seemed to cause them annoyance. The restaurant and pool areas were very serene, that anything other than very quiet couples would seem to be causing a disturbance! I would definitely consider the Crowne Plaza if I was going to Geneva again. (I have posted some photos separately)
