“Very nice, as long as you don't want milk in your tea!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2010

We just returned from a 3 night break to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary. The welcome was amazing, with drinks in our room and fresh fruit being served shortly after arrival. We paid for a "Deluxe" Room - this means you can see the Lake (not necessarily the fountain which was rarely in operation during our stay - not the fault of the hotel I hasten to add!!). The staff were attentive, almost to the point of being oppressive, there was a free wi-fi connection, and after such a warm welcome we hoped for great things. However, there were no "magazines" or "fruit" in our room, as stated on their website (unless this meant the apple & orange we received on arrival?). We were never asked if we would like to use the gym or sauna. We were never offered a Geneva Travel Card (free to all Geneva Hotel Guests), and we had great trouble getting any milk for our tea!! We only learned of the Geneva Travel Card from this website, and were only issued with one when we asked for it. Some previous comments have noted that the hotel is not in the Old Town - however there are very few good hotels in that area. All of the good hotels are in the vicinity of this hotel and are just a short (10 minute) walk or boat ride (2 minutes) from the (much nicer) old town. The boat leaves from right outside the hotel, and is free with a Geneva Travel Card. There is a plentiful tea tray in your room, but this does not include milk (even UHT), only powdered coffee creamer. Any Englishman will know that tea needs fresh milk! So on Saturday morning I called room service and requested a small jug of fresh milk. 20 minutes later the milk had not arrived so I had to call again, and soon after the milk arrived. The following day we returned mid-afternoon to collect some sweaters. The ever-dutiful concierge was on hand to open the lift door, and I requested that some milk be sent up to our room. Nothing happened! As the previous day, 20 Minutes later I had to call AGAIN to request the milk, and miraculously a suitably embarrassed young man appeared at our door soon after. Now, in itself, milk is not a serious matter. It is milk. However, the hotel prides itself on having entertained such guests as Michael Jackson, Celine Dion and Mikhael Gorbachev. I wonder how long they would have had to wait for a small jug of milk? This is a beautiful hotel, in a beatiful location and the room itself was idyllic, if a little old fashioned. Turndown was fabulous, with not just the obligatory chocolate on the pillow, but also the blinds and curtains were closed, a candle was lit in the bathroom and all manner of other lovely little touches were performed. However, the point of my review is that all of this was a little mechanical, both the arrival "procedure" and the turndown. But when push came to shove, they didn't seem able to honour the most simple of requests. At £600 per night, room only, a small jug of milk doesn't seem like such an unreasonable request - does it?

We stayed there a Friday night and the bar 2 floors below us was noisy until midnight. Saturday night we phoned Front Desk at 12:15 a.m. due to same noise & were told to expect it til 2:00 a.m. We asked for a different room, & were moved 2 floors up, to a smoking room, not as nice as ours but with the same view. Because we got out of bed, packed our stuff & moved in the middle of the night, we lost half a night's sleep. No financial concession was made for this upon check-out the next morning. It's an expensive hotel --the restaurant especially is hugely expensive, and I expected more, because the service in every other way had been very good until then.

The bottom line with this hotel is service. It was first rate. While we could've spent more at other hotels, we could not have any better service. Our room was spacious by European standards and the location was perfect for touring the city. The concierge Stephan was more than cordial or polite as was the entire desk staff. In fact, we were directed to our best meal while in town at Brasserie Lipp. Plus, we were given wonderful tips on what to see while in town. Also, while downstairs lounge while pricy, it was the only active bar during the middle of the week. One note...we did have lunch at the hotel's restaurant. Both of our entrees were only mediocre. Nevertheless, save a few "Benjamins" and enjoy the same service as a more expensive upscale hotel next door or down the block.

The Hotel d'Angleterre exceeded my expectations. The staff was friendly, very personal and top notch. In looking at the room photos online before checking in I thought they would be a bit overdone, but they were not. The room was fantastic. Very clean. Very opulent. The toiletries were plentiful. I personally was impressed by the plush towels (Christy). I've stayed at other 5 star properties with towels that were more like rags. The manager made a point to speak to guests. Breakfast and tea were fantastic. The service was impressive. They treat you like a vip holding doors, addressing you by name, offering to help with any need. Other 5-stars could learn a lot from how they operate this hotel. The hotel is close to a lot of restaurants and a few minutes to the main train station. The mouette that travels to old town was just across the street and the hotel will provide transportation passes for them and for buses. The only down point is that cigar and cigarette smoke from the Leopard bar did travel up to the rooms and we were on the 4th floor, but opening the windows cleared it out within minutes.

Location is as good as it get, our room had a great view of the jet fountain and a balcony with enough room for two bundled up people to sit and have hot coffee in the morning. Service was outstanding and while it lacks a full gym breakfast, and tea in the afternoon, would be hard to beat anywhere.

I stayed at the D'angleterre for 4 nights in a deluxe room with lake view. The room was beautifully & comfortably furnished & the view was wonderful. However, the hotel is a bit of a walk (some up hill) to the old town where all the sights are.

Housekeeping was excellent. The products in the bathroom are very nice.

All the staff are were charming.

The food in the restaurant was good - if a bit elaborate.

Be warned though the whole experience is terribly expensive. A 2 course meal with a glass of champagne & a glass of wine was £100 for one person ! Continental breakfast in the room for 1 about £20.

There is a bar in the basement which is open till 2am with live music. As the night wears on the smell of cigarette & cigar smoke drifted up the stair well & is evident in the air conditioning. I was on the first floor & had to turn the heating off & open my windows to get fresh air.

Also I was conscious of the thump of the bass from the live band until 1.30am - so ask for a room high up.

It is however a charming hotel with staff who can't do enough for you.
