“Make sure you make a reservation!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013 via mobile

Having visited this place a few years ago OK in the summer at lunch were we sat outside it never entered our heads to reserve, however during sightseeing during the day we were in the area, noted has busy it was and eventually managed to find someone to sort a reservation out for the evening.
When we turned up in the evening it was a good job! The place was packed, we were put on a table with enough group they were so busy.
As in our previous visit the food and drink were very good, certainly the only place I could find in Been that sold anything like decent beer!

“Fun, Great View, Okay Beer and Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

I loved the atmosphere and the view however I was underwhelmed by the beer and food. The prices seemed more reasonable to other restaurants in Bern so that was a plus but the food was just so-so and they only had light beers on tap. Nothing dark? Nein!

I had a sausage plate which I assumed would have come with a couple of different types of sausage but no, the links were all the same. The soup was just okay.

“Delicious food and great service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

Although the bears were hibernating when we visited, on a rainy day at the end of December, we were not disappointed with the delicious spätzle and rösti, and the microbrewed beer brewed on the premises. We were too late to enjoy the special Christmas seasonal beer as it was sold out! Six of us had a modest meal each for 143 Swiss Francs. We've learned that this is not extraordinary for Swiss restaurants. Portions were generous and the quality excellent!

“Go for the view, stay for the beer, eat if you must”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

It's a great spot for tourists, located above the newly constructed bear enclosure with a fantastic view across the river towards the old town. Inside you'll find a huge open space in what once must've been where the trams were housed but now contains a restaurant and a micro brewery.

Considering the food is typically Swiss i.e. not exactly difficult to prepare, it took ages to arrive. We turned up with a reservation at 1145 on a Saturday when it was less than half full and ordered almost immediately (booking recommended at any time from how busy it got) but had to wait 40 minutes for the food. Whilst kids can be placated with free pencils, I had to settle for the excellent beer "Spiced Ale" which you can get in glasses as small as 2dl (circa 1/3 pint), still, it was getting on for 1230 when the food arrived. When it did it was a bit of a disappointment. The kids meal of 'burger and chips' was literally just that: A burger, a bun and chips. No other filling at all! The adults meals were average by Swiss standards though very substantial and the prices here are not cheap.
Stick to the bar and stick to the beer. If you want Swiss food you can get better, cheaper in the main town
Would not visit again, would recommend for the brewery.
