“Overpriced for what you get”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013 via mobile

The ambassador is a nice hotel. The rooms though are very small with the bathroom pretty much in the room. Breakfast is not included in the price and if you are any lower than the second floor you won't really get a view.
The time we stayed there they were renovating the hotel which meant one elevator less working and hammering noise from 9 in the morning...which is slightly upsetting if you want to stay somewhere to relax.
The staff is very helpful and friendly, the spa area is small, but clean, like the rest of the hotel.
Overall I don't think I would spend as much money on a place like this again.

This is a business- and congress hotel but also great a great place to stay during a holiday. The hotel is out of the city centre (towards the Gurten) but with nice modern trams connecting the hotel every 10 minutes with the train station (the tram ride roughly takes 7 minutes) that is no problem at all. The hotel is in a great location for taking a swim in the Aare, sunbathing at Marzili or for an excursion onto the already mentioned Gurten.

All rooms have great views. Some look out over the old city and others (like ours) over gentle and peaceful farmland. Staff is friendly and welcoming. We had breakfast in the hotel (which was plenty and of OK quality). Our room had a great, modern bathroom with a tub. The hotel also has a nice swimming pool and spa area, though we didn't use it (rather had a swim in the Aare, as the weather was fantastic). But in winter this is a nice extra.

There are two restaurants at the hotel and others at walking distance. Or just take the tram.

We will happily stay again at hotel Ambassador.

Room Tip: You can ask for a room overlooking the old city.

I only spent one night at the Ambassador, and feel it was quite enough. The view on the Swiss Parlement and the city of Bern is great, there is no way to argue with that.
However, for 270 USD, in a city like Bern, the hotel being a bit remote from the center (although accessible in 10 min with the tramway), one would expect more. The room was small and the bathroom was more or less integrated in it, living very little room for privacy if you're not alone. The spa and pool were really small too, then again, arriving with better expectations due to the price.
As in most hotels in Switzerland, everything was clean and tidy and the staff was friendly, but that was just not enough. If you are in Bern, look elsewhere unless you find an offer for 150-200 USD.

The Ambassador Hotel has a brilliant view over the city of Bern. It is however not located in the centre of the town and needs a 10 min ride by tram to the city centre. The tram stop is located just outside the hotel entrance. The rooms are not very spacious but serve all needs and are clean. The bathroom is functional but is not obvious to handle. The staff is very friendly and competent.

Staff is nice and welcoming the newcomers. Breakfast has a large variety of yogurt and birkenmüsli. Coffee was made and stocked inside a percolateur (big metal box with a tap)
At breakfast symbolic presence of a line of yellowish cheese and redish ham that no guest dared to touch.
Having said this, the style is Novotel/Ibis. Standard rooms of 20 square meters.
We payed 155 Euro for a Triple with breakfast.
Triple room, as often happened to us in Spain and Greece, is a double with a third camping-style bed. So you will lack air and space.
Bern has the main problem of very good expensive hotels (Schweitzerhof hotel: you will never find less than 200 euro for a single room and 350 for a double, even in periods the city is desert or there is no international event) and than, at a distance, there are other hotels of quite different lower standards I would not come back again : for example, City Hotel that belongs to the same chain of Ambassador.
Hotel Savoy can be a good compromise for its standards but if you are a family of three they will propose you two rooms, therefore breaking through your budget.
Going back to our comments on the Ambassador: the name is very pretentious, as we did not see diplomats there and the Four Star "Superior" Category (Swiss authorities of tourism are quite generous in granting such a honorary title) will oblige you to a long route between this district of the city and downtown: If you pay 2 franks and 60 cents for every ride on the tram, maybe it would be time to think to plan going to a higher class hotel in another closer and less expensive city (try the town of Olten or head directly to Basel) depending on the reasons and time you are for in Bern

The Hotel is located about 10 minutes from the central train station. The rooms are pretty basic and like others have commented the bathroom situation is a little weird! That said, the room was clean and large by Swiss standards.

The staff were polite and the room rate is reasonable for the city. There's not much to do near the Hotel so be prepared to travel for meals. There is a tram outside the Hotel but it's probably quicker to travel by bus in Bern. Most taxi driver seemed familiar with it though.

There are two restaurants on site: a Japanese and a western one. Both recent but not remarkable. Same applies for the breakfast, pretty average.

A word of advise: the rooms only have swiss style sockets that wont fit most international power adapters. You will need a "Type-J" adapter like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:J_plug.jpg

Overall a pretty basic hotel ok for short business trips. Btw the key is mechanical and placed on a huge tag!
