“Worth the short commute to downtown”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2010

Pictures accompanying this site are pretty representative of what you get. Room was spotless and well maintained. Internet and breakfast included in the rate. Interesting automatic shades outside windows drop when sun hits the window. I stayed here for a week while working in downtown Bern. Thought I would miss not being "in the middle of things" but after checking out some of the downtown hotel rooms, this place tops them for size, amenities, and proximity to a modern shopping mall which includes a large grocery store. Be aware however that except for a few places in the food court, the mall is closed on Sundays (as are most places in downtown Bern!). Priority Club membership doesn't do anything for you at the hotel. For 35 CHF (abt 35 USD) a weekly rail pass gives you unlimited rides on ALL public transport including 2 zones which includes everything from Brunnen where the hotel is located and downtown Bern and everything in between. Worth it for a week's stay. Train to downtown Bern Bahnhoff (train station) takes abt 8 min. Bus about 20-25 min. (Cab from Bern Bahnhoff to hotel cost abt $35 USD one way!) Good buffet breakfast variety. Lots of electric outlets in room for all electronics. Would be nice to have a mini-bar refrig in my room.

I've been there for only one night with my mother to do shopping at the westside, and that was way enough. First, our air conditionner was broken. We tried everything we could to turn it on, but it didn't help. We asked for help, nobody came. We had to spend the night in a over-heated room, without possibility to open the window. Then, this seems more like a love-hotel or motel to me as a room for a mother and her daughter. There was a see-in window-door at the bathroom, with a mirror just in front of it. Seeing people pee from the bed must seem interesting to the architect who has done it. Embarassing. Then, my mother tried using the hairdryer. An awful smell of burnt came out of it first, then it didn't work anymore. The shower wasn't really clean either. It's also very noisy, you can hear the neighbours through the walls as if they are in your room. With all those problems, we asked for some help at the desk. At least a coupon or a little refund. They just refused, not even in a proper manner. Never again will we spend a night there.

Nice business hotel located in the outskirts of Bern.

Front desk staff is frendly and helpfull.
Rooms are midsize but high standard with modern styled bathroom.

Enjoy the avant-garde water park and the shopping mall next door.
Only the wellness effect is worth the stay!

Don't miss the breakfast buffet it's outstanding and far beyond standard.

Connection to town is easy.
Trains to Bern central are departing frequently right in front of the hotel.

We spent one night in Holiday Inn West Side. It is typical Holiday Inn in the outskirts of Bern, in a shopping mall West Side. The location is not good if you want to visit the city, but it’s a good place for a business stay, and actually for a short break with a visit to a spa.

Bruennen is the closest train station, it is located less than a hundred meters from the hotel entrance. Trains to Bern leave every 10 min or so, it’s not a problem getting into the city at all.

The hotel is part of the shopping mall/water park building. It is very convenient – you don’t have to go outside to reach cinemas, shops, swimming pools, restaurants.
The hotel was very clean and quiet, even though our room was facing the rail tracks. The view is OK, though it’s a very industrial area: the Bernese Oberland view the hotel website promises is accompanied by high-rise apartment blocks.

The room was very clean, beds quite comfortable. The bathroom was also impeccably clean, though bathroom supplies were lacking – there was only a hair balm. The only thing we didn’t like about the room was the air conditioning: we couldn’t adjust the temperature and it did get quite hot during the night.

Breakfast was good, especially for Europe, there was a choice of yoghurts, cheese, fresh fruit, ham, egg dishes etc. It costs 20 CHF per person if not included in the room rate.

The staff was polite and smiley. As the previous reviewer noted, there was a bit of “cannot do anything” attitude, my Priority Club membership didn’t impress them either. However, I must say, our requests were met eventually.

I’d very much recommend visiting Bernaqua water park and spa while in the area. It is a large complex with a bunch of pools, saunas, water slides and Roman-Irish baths. Provides a great relaxing experience. Get there early to beat the crowds, it does get packed at the weekend.

There is not that much to do in the evening - there is a cinema, a few restaurants, but nothing exciting.

All in all Westside is a very decent Holiday Inn, conveniently located close to shopping area, water park and a cinema multiplex.

I guess I didn't make a breakfast booking at the time of my internet booking so now they want to charge me double (US$18 per person). I asked what they could do especially as I am a Priority Club member, but I just got "it's not my fault - it's the policy"

Please note car parking cost about US$25 for a day

All English channels on the TV did not work - they came to check but "it's not the hotels fault"

Having said all that - it is clean and reasonably decent but for sure this was the worse hotel "experience" of my trip through Germany/Switzerland
