I enjoyed the food at the Gasthof zum Goldenen Sternen, but the service and setting each left something to be desired.
I started with an appetizer of shrimp and asparagus and then, for my main dish, had a roulade of black-feathered chicken with goat cheese; both were very, very good. The bread was wonderful (I thought the rosemary bread particulary tasty), but I had to flag down a server to ask for bread, and was then only given one roll at a time.
The restaurant was busy the night that I was there, and I can understand how that might affect the service, but I don’t think that was the main problem: Instead, servers seemed to think that they could only accomplish one purpose for any given trip from the kitchen. It was actually painful to see them moving at a near trot to and from the kitchen, carrying just one or two items at a time and trying to assure the rest of us that they would attend to our needs as soon as they could. With such an inefficient approach, of course the service was slow!
I also found the setting sub-par. It had been raining, so I had was seated at an table inside, beside a window. Unfortunately, there was an exceedingly bright lamp at eye level on the windowsill (there was one on every windowsill), and no matter how I positioned my head, I couldn’t avoid seeing it. So not only did I find the room too bright in general, I ended up with quite a headache. (The restaurant was also very noisy, which didn’t help.) I suspect it would be much more enjoyable on an evening when one can sit outside by the river.
