“Great 4* hotel with a view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2010

The hotel is relatively well located. It's near a main tram station quick and easy access to the rest of the city and the hotel provides a free unlimited "mobility pass". The hotel is clean but I found my room a little small for a four star. Then again, the price is very reasonable. The staff was friendly and helpful.

We were invited to a family gathering in Basel to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary which was being held in the Merian hotel . We stayed in the hotel with many other guests, and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Conveniently located on the river close to all the main central areas, the Merian is a good family hotel, with good sized rooms. The provision of a travel pass for the duration of the stay was also most welcome. The function was extremely well organised, and of a high quality considering the numbers (over 70). Recommended if you want a good hotel in the centre of Basel. Don't miss the pub just down the road from the hotel (turn right out of the entrance) - it has its own brewery.

I stayed there for 1 night only but i liked it very much, the location was great and the friendly staff made it even better, what i remember correctly is their breakfast was great and they gave me also 1 day ticket for me and my wife to use the public bus to get around the city. I may go there again if i'm in basel.

great price, great clean room, great staff, outstanding view. Loved it !
I mistakingly boked for 1 person instead od two, they prepared a bigger room for us.
~25 m2, huge room, with two bathrooms (one with the bath and sink and the other one with the toilet and a sink). A bit old fashioned but very clean.
I booked with street view and they gave us a room with view on the Rhein. 4 windows altogether, very bright room, with a Nespresso machine and 3 capsules for free.
We came with a Dobermann, and had no problem with him (no additional charge). The staff was highly professionnal, great advice for a japanse restaurant (Sakura on the Bahnhofplatz). They speak English, French and German.
The parking is free, the metro stop is right accross the street, the center is upon walking distance.
Great stay, great City.

I mind to give a bad grade because the staff
has been very kind and helpful. In addition to that,
the hotel is central and very clean. But the good news
really end here.
My room was tiny and very very sad. Thin walls don't
help with noise. Have a look at the picture and judge the
bathroom by yourself. Definitely the worst part of the
room. The TV set is proper of a low 2* hotel. Lobby
is almost not existent and I found the bar very dark
and unfriendly. A bit of fresh air in the corridors wouldn't
mind. Breakfast average to be kind.
All in all not even close to a real 4* swiss hotel -
apart from the price, of course, 150 euro for a single room
in a low season.

We stayed in Basel for one night just passing through and are glad we did... it's a very scenic town with great atmosphere. The view from the hotel balcony was excellent, very relaxing watching the river flow by. I would definately recommend a river side room as rooms on the other side would look over the alley. The hotel staff were the friendliest we encountered in our whole trip through Europe, the young blond girl on reception really went out of her way to make sure we enjoyed our stay. The room is fairly plain for a four star, but clean and big enough for two. The location is very central with everything we wanted to see within walking distance. We would definately stay here again if we go back to Basel

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2006

I stayed here over the week-end at a terrific rate of 140.00 CHF (single) enjoying a view towards the river Rhine. I reconfirmed my booking by telephone and had all my questions answered in a friendly, quick and competent manner. On arrival the check-in procedure left ambivalent feelings, staff could have stepped out in a more welcoming manner. And the reception area is small and a bit dull.
The room was on 3rd floor and was on the scenic side. It was on the small side and the "grand lit" (140cm) was all right for me alone. (They do let it for double occupancy but I would question how to find a good night's sleep on such a small bed.) The room had great plus points:
an extra door to the small vestibule would block all noise from the hallway
a "nespresso" coffee-maker
It was well lit, the bed was of good quality, there were two small arm-chairs, and a mini-bar.
The bath-room had a tub and was of an adequate size.
I really enjoyed staying in that room since it offered views I formerly enjoyed as a pedestrian when having lived and worked in Basel and crossing the historic bridge daily.
The breakfast experience was not outstanding but all right. I did not try the restaurant in the evening, since I had made several below average experiences as a walk-in customers over the years ago.
As one reviewer already marked out: there is not much car traffic around BUT the streetcars do make some noise and the pedestrians at the river bank also do. So I would recommend this hotel for stays in winter time, when there are less people outside.
The staff could work on itself for being more welcoming, the management should invest some work to make this hotel above average, since it has great potential due to its location and its own history.

  • Liked — Location and view from room
  • Disliked — arrival experience, could have been far more welcoming
