“practical hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

Nothing really to say about Hilton hôtels. They are somehow ageing in a style of the 80's, so either there is a refurbishement, or it will become one day a collector hotel!!! Rooms are just fine, a bit small I would say. But convenient for visitors. Located near the train station, and near the tramway station. Don't expect a health club (although the hotel mentions this)! there is a swimming pool but no gym, which many client would expect I think.

Phenomenal hotel. Through and through. We were backpacking and so a hotel close to the HBF was really important. And it's RIGHT THERE when you step outside of the station. Great amenities, unbelievably friendly and helpful concierge and the breakfasts were outstanding. Great buffet...but a "gourmet buffet"...not just a cafeteria set up. Highly recommended.

Yet another in a long list of terribly expensive and unacceptable Swiss hotels. I only come to Switzerland for business and would never venture into the country otherwise. It is expensive beyond belief and basically a boring white ghetto.
This hotel has absolutely nothing to offer expect a very standard, uncomfortable, overpriced room. At almost $500per night, (some friends who booked later than I did were paying almost $800 per night) it is a joke. The rooms are small and in need of a serious updating. The beds are prison -issue hard. The rug worn and dirty. Why don't they put padding under the rugs in this country..I felt like I was walking on cement. The TV system is probably of 1976 vintage and did not work at all. The hair dryer in the bathroom was rigged inside a drawer and I nearly threw out my back trying to use it. The Internet is over 30$ per day and a plastic bottle of water in the room is priced at almost
$12, yes really.
This is the type of hotel that in a major international city like New York would be $250 per night tops, and would garner a five star rating in a place like rural North Africa. how can this country be so expensive, it boggles my mind at every turn..a decent lunch that would be $30 to 40 pp in a major american city is $125 pp here, the shortest taxi ride is $30...and for what?
A note to fellow travelers everywhere..there are so many fantastic and interesting places to see in the world, give expensive Switzerland and it ridiculously expensive and substandard hotels a big pass.

Dear Guest,

Please let us express that it is to our regret that you are obviously having a very negative impression about hotels in Switzerland and this lovely country in general. Switzerland is internationally known for having a very high price level. However in our opinion this comes along with a high value for living and quality in a beautiful country of large variety.

Regarding your inputs we kindly inform you that all rooms have been equipped with flat screen TVs in 2010 and are constantly maintained. In addition our mattresses are of high quality and less than 7 years of age. Last year and this year we have carpets of many rooms and corridors as well as furnishing replaced for customer comfort along with several further investments to maintain Hilton service quality. We are sorry to know that charges for additional services such as internet did not meet your expectations and apologise for caused inconveniences concerning hair drying.

We appreciate that people from all over the world are coming to Basel every year (more 1.000.000 arrivals in 2012) to experience Basel in all its facets for themselves and explore or do business in a fascinating city.

With kind regards,
Nadine Schmidt

Hilton Basel is situated perfectly since it is very close to the train station and very close to MarketPlatz. Easy walking distance to most attractions and restaurants. I feel that Hilton Basel is a very good Hotel for the Business Traveler, but for a traveler from the United States, it is somewhat on the expensive side. It is not a tourist type hotel and does not offer amenities on a grand scale. For instance, the Fitness Center is nothing more than a closet size room with a few dumbells. There is no cardio equipment or resistance type of equipment. Luckily, Basel is well suited for jogging and walking and a rewarding workout can be had.

It is often hard to find hotel rooms in Basel at peak times , but Hilton should be low on your list . The decor is faded and the rooms in need of upgrading ( although clean and utilitarian ) Charging over 25 francs for daily internet ( on top of a hefty room price ) is one thing- charging 9 francs for a bottle of water is just day light robbery . Staff are friendly and efficient but seemed overworked - breakfast was passable , but the restaurant and bar area lacked any atmosphere ..I doubt I will be back ...

Room Tip: Press hard for upgrade or rooms on a higher level...good views !!

The average hotel (more like 4 star hotel), but location improved total rate. It's too expensive hotel for the services provided and there are many additional charges like brekfast (34CHF), Wifi (10 CHF) etc....

The Staff are friendly and efficient. This is an older hotel but well managed and worth the bit extra for a room on the executive floor – here you get access to a lounge that is opened for several hours a day including breakfast. This was booked ahead of time and pre paid to get the best rate which can be a bit of a pain if you are doing it to far in advance. However it worked out well for us. This hotel is close to the tram station and the train station which gives easy access to the airport and the town.

Room Tip: book an executive room for better value.
