“Loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2009

We spent 2 extra nights in Switzerland after our River Cruise (it ended in Basel) and stayed here. The hotel was exactly what we wanted, close to the train station (2 minutes if you walk slow) and was clean and comfy.

We arrived early, about 8:30, and the room wasn't ready, so we just left our bags with the front desk, and caught a train to Lucerne for a day trip. When we returned, check in was a breeze. Our room was 300 something, but we were on the 4th floor (actually the 5th in Europe) with the other 400 series of rooms. Sound confusing? The buttons on the elevator do outline this for you, so you don't have to remember. We later found out the reason for this is that the hotel merged with another hotel and the odd numbering are a result of the renovation.

The hotel is very clean, great staff and the rooms were actually nice. Great linens, towels, nice bathroom and the bed was comfy. Internet access was provided, but we didn't have our laptop on this trip. There is a computer in the lobby that is available for 10-15 minutes at a time for free. Great to check email. Also included is breakfast. The meal itself was better than average, but the setting was way cool. It's in an old part of the hotel, and furnished quite nicely.

Another great perk was that there is a grocery store next door that also has a deli. Great place to buy Swiss Chocolate to bring home. We caught a plane from Basel (Euro) Airport and as part of renting a room you are given free public transportation. So, a bus picks you up right at the train station to take you to the airport. Very convenient. One last perk was that the mini-bar was included with the room.

Not sure that we'd stay in Basel again, there are much more scenic parts of Switzerland, but if we do, we would stay here for sure. Great place.

Very convenient when for the train - about 30 seconds walk from the station. Taxi rank across the street too. Small lobby, very helpful and friendly check-in staff. Small lift, but never had to wait. Some rooms on the ground floor, good for disabled access. Rooms smallish, but well laid out. Some single rooms for business travellers. Very clean and tidy. No noise from the street. Nowhere to have dinner - everything in Basel appears to close at 9pm - ended up in MacDonalds next door (there's free internet in there too). Breakfast excellent - nice sized dining room, plenty of food, good variety. When I checked out, the receptionist gave me a packed lunch (apple, cereal bar and chocolate) - a nice touch. No problems for them to store my bags either. Overall, a very convenient base for business, not sure I'd recommend it for a romantic stay, but I'd use it again.

First of all, this is a good hotel with nice clean rooms and very friendly staff.
The reason for my average rating however is that I booked this hotel expecting it to be nicely situated - but in reality it is very close to the station area, and indeed next door to McDonalds. On one hand this means it is convenient if you are travelling by train, but on the other that you have to suffer from things that you usually find in this area - like fast food outlets!

The rooms are also quite small, and there is no lounge area or bar.

In summary, this is a reasonable hotel in my view as long as you know about the location and lack of lounge area/bar, and don't mind small rooms - and set your expectations accordingly. Otherwise you may be dissapointed.

Our family of 5 first stayed at the St. Gotthard back in 2003. We've stayed there ourselves or , now that we live in the area, have booked relatives into the St. Gotthard perhaps 10 times; we have always had a great experience. The staff are very friendly(!), remembering us each time we pass through. The breakfast is always very good. Tthe rooms are always immaculate. The Economist placed in the room (presumably since the hotel is across the street from the Bank of International Settlements) always makes us smile. For families, the hotel has some ajoining rooms. But the staff is probably what keeps us coming back.

I returned from staying at this hotel for 3 nights. The hotel is centrally located next to the train station (SBB), and it's easy to get to from the airport by bus (#50). The hotel price included a daily breakfast buffet (very yummy) and a transit pass (just hop on the tram - or light trail in N. America terms). The hotel staff was friendly and hopefully when asked about shopping and restaurants.

Downsides: a bit noisy when windows are open; no free internet (10 Swiss Franc/ hr, but free for 10 min); have to walk by a MacDonald to get to the hotel's entrance from the main transit station.

Stopped here for one night, good location right next to railway station and a easy walk to the centre! Co-Op next door great! Lots of restaurants nearby. Check in was friendly, quick, efficient! Hotel very clean, bright and welcoming. Our room had a little balcony, very clean, beds comfy! the room was small but adaquate the bathroom too but nicely done and the shower was a good size.
The room was a little light, curtains could of been thicker and you could hear the trams rumbeling by but hey its atmospheric!

Would most certainly stay here again.

I stayed at this hotel for 5 days, and it was my first time in Switzerland. I don't think I could've chosen a better place to stay! They were very efficient when booking the room, and had everything mostly ready when I checked in.
The room was very comfortable and spotless, and there were all the amenities you expect from a hotel like this, including cable TV, internet access and a mini bar.
The staff was very friendly and helped with everything, from information about the city and attractions to keeping my suitcase for a few hours after checkout.
The breakfast is possibly the best one I've ever had in a hotel! There are so many options that it's hard to decide what to eat. Everything is delicious and the breakfast room itself is gorgeous.
The location couldn't be better. It's right in front of the train station, although I couldn't hear any noises from my room, which was facing the street. Because everything in Basel closes so early, the last stores that are open are inside the train station, including a very good supermarket, a pharmacy and some other stores. There's also four or five different lines of streetcars that are just across the street, and you can get anywhere in the city like that. The hotel provides a visitor's mobility ticket for the duration of the stay, which allowed me to take any public transportation inside the city.
There's plenty to see in the city, but my favorite parts were the zoo and the river.
