“Loved it, loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2010

This was a welcome 2-night stop on our 2+ week tour through Europe. Big lobby, friendly welcoming staff, super clean, new, modern, nice room, big giant window, bathrooms with generous shower and counter space. After squeezing into tiny historical hotels for a week this was a very nice break. It was reminiscent of an American business hotel. Easy walk to the big train station and the zoo. Free wi-fi in lobby. We went on the weekend and had a great low rate. Also, you can use the free mobility pass to get around and there are tram stops right in front of the hotel. Very convenient. In the room, I wish there were more channels in english and a little shelf in the shower to put your shampoo/soaps on. But neither is a big deal. We loved the Vitra campus in Weil am Rhein (short bus ride across the river) and the zoo. Vitra is a "must see" if you like furniture or architecture!

This hotel was clean, friendly and overall a pleasant stay. A typical style Ibis hotel, rooms were basic, had a tv, good shower, open style wardrobe but roomy enough for a longer or short break. No tea/coffee facilities in the room itself and the plugs needed a special adaptor which you can borrow from reception if you give a deposit which is refundable when you leave providing you hand the adaptor back. Restaurant was comfortable but we didnt actually use it so I am unable to comment on the food itself, although we did use the bar & coffee service which was great. Its around the corner from the train station and tram stations are in easy reach. Internet service available in the reception area. There was some noise from the traffic if you opened the window but there is air conditioning to compensate. The tram service was excellent and the hotel provided us with a free travel pass for the duration of our stay on all public transport. It was also easy enough to take the short pleasant walk across to Basel city itself. Booking in was quick despite our group of ten. Staff were friendly and helpful. Language barriers were few and far between, most spoke english quite well. Would definately recommend this hotel for its overall good service and location. Basel was an interesting place to visit and I would recommend doing the city tour on foot as you get to understand what you see and things that you might miss otherwise. Shops were great and varying. Food & drink was excellent everywhere we ate (even from the stalls on the market square) although its not particularly cheap. It was about £6/7 for half a litre of lager on average. Lots of lovely pastries, chocolates and savoury outlets everywhere. In particular we enjoyed Restaurant Zum Stadtkeller where the food was excellent and the staff and locals very accommodating. There was a quirky 'singing stags head' in the ladies wc which gave the girls a giggle and a 'football goal urinal' in the mens, which really amused the boys! Overall a great place to visit and a very good hotel to consider for your stay.

This is a great hotel for a stopover but comfortable enough to stay a few nights. Well located near the train station and right on the tram route- just a few stops into town and free if you are staying at the hotel, get a pass from reception. Underground car park, just pull up to the black doors and ring the buzzer- this does mean driving over the tram tracks and the pavement so be careful! Also I grounded the car on th way in so I suggest losing your passengers before driving down the ramp- and the height clearance is 1.8m. In Basel try the pork naps in the Market- delicious!

I didn't have much time when booking this hotel, so when I read on their website "The Ibis Hotel Basel Bahnhof is located directly next to the main train station" I assumed that I'll be able to see it once I exit the train station - especially seeing what it looks like on their website. How wrong was my assumption! I didn't realise that there are two main stations in Basel - one SBB (and that's what it's called SBB Bahnhof) and the other for Deutsche Bahn - Basel Badischer Bahnhof!

Since I was arriving from Germany I ended up at Badischer and then spent half an hour walking around the train station lugging my baggage thinking it's as close as it sounds in the description - "directly next".

So my recommendation to them would be to update their website to mention it's SBB Bahnhof rather generic "main train station" (which could be obvious to locals, but not to a first time visitor). And while at this - remove "directly next" as well - as it's a fair walk, especially if you have a couple suitcases.

I give it three "dots" as they over-promised and under-delivered on their website.

Otherwise - the building was as expected from a reasonably new Ibis hotel - they also had Internet kiosk in lobby (not free), many local tv channels (I enjoyed a swiss movie, don't often see them).

Note - their powerpoints only accept Swiss plugs, which are different from European - so you have to either bring your own or you can borrow them at reception (thanks for that!)

I haven't tried their breakfast.

Staff seemed to be reasonable in their service - nothing major to remark on.
Once I figured out my mistake

Perfect location. Bus No 50 from Euroairport leaves you outside the SBB, just 5 minutes walk to the Hotel.
Trams No 16 and No 2 to the city centre stops just outside the Hotel.
The mobility card (free pass for trams and buses) was excellent.
Ride any tram to any destination...city is wonderful.
Don't miss the Paper Museum. The location around it is unbelievable.
We rent a car for a day and travel to Zurich and then to Luzern. Just Perfect.

location of hotel is a short walk from the train station, also next to a tram stop. Room was clean and basic, only stayed one night so did us ok. Good value considering Basel is expensive. Staff were friendly and helpful. You also get a pass for free transport around the city during your stay.
