“Chocofantastic!!!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2008

I really appreciated this hotel!!!
The building isn't so charming from the outside, but inside you have a choco-experience that you'll not forget.
The staff is very friendly and helpful regarding informations about bus, the city and so on, and you'll have a choco tablet on your arrival according to the level in which you're staying (milk, nuts, black).
The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing, the rooms are spacious and also the bathrooms.
For the Umbria Jazz there was a free shuttle bus that took us just in front of the Arena Santa Giuliana, also coming back until 2.50.
The thing i liked least was the location, quite far from the city center so we had to take 1 bus to the station and then the mini metro to the city center.

The hotel looks like it belongs to a large chain and so the decor and rooms are fairly bland. However you feel when staying here that they have tried to make an effort to give it a bit of style - from the bar of chocolate at check-in to the choice of having chocolate at breakfast. There is also free internet access in the lobby.
It is near the station and quite a walk uphill before you hit the scala mobile to the centre of Perugia. The up side of this is it is fairly easy to find and to get to, if you are driving. It also has parking directly outside the front of the hotel. The parking is not secure but it is opposite reception and on a fairly busy road.
There is a sunny rooftop pool but it is overlooked by some flats.
The hotel staff were lovely, very efficient and helpful. On reception they had the times of the flights to and from Perugia airport and they will arrange to book an airport minibus in time for your flight if you wish.
The hotel is functional, clean and bland it has no exciting views or decor, however the staff are charming and helpful and lift the mood of the whole hotel.

The only positive about this hotel was that the staff was cordial when we told them that we wanted to cancel our remaining reservation after one very uncomfortable night there. The location of this place in not close to the historic part of town. We switched to the elelgant Sangallo Palace Hotel - which gave us a lower rate than the Chocohotel - and was situated in an excellent position in the town of Perugia. The hallways on the floors with the rooms were very dark and narrow. The bedroom was very small and it had two very hard and uncomfortable beds. The flooring was inexpensive commercial carpeting. The night was a torture with lots of traffic from the road below. I hardly slept due to the noise and also the uncomfortable bed and developed some kind of allergic reaction to something in the environment. I was attracted to the hotel because it looked inviting and novel on their website...as soon as we walked in we knew that we made a mistake. While we were there a large busload of tourist came in and overwhelmed the facility. The price of the hotel - 120E is much too high. The breakfast was OK.

  • Disliked — Uncomfortable - unattractive room with very small TV

Chocolate is everywhere in this nice hotel.
When you fetch your room keys at the concierge you are gifted with a chocolate tablet, if you ask the staff you can change your milk or haleznuts tablet with a pure black choco one (a must).
The hotel has three floors first is milk-floor (al latte), then come chestnuts-floor (gianduia) and last come the pure black (fondente), on the roof-top you may find a nice (hence quite small) swimming pool.
Besides choco, worth mentioning in this hotel are the freebies available, in the lobby you have free of charge wi-fi connection (very usefull for business travelers) and some computers if you don't have your lapton with you.
Moreover some of the rooms have some special feature, like the xbox or playstation3 (games available at the concierge), widescreen tv, massage chair, tapis roulant, stereo, there no surcharge but you will have to reserve one well in advance and ask for that specific room.
Back to choco, in the lobby, left of the front desk you may find a bar with lots of choco and a choco shop with all the choco kinds and shapes, you will also find a corner with super low priced choco (be carefull this choco must is best before a couple of weeks).
There is also a playing room with some flippers and videogames (not for free) and a couple of meeting room (nothing special or hi-tech thought).
The breakfast is surely to mention, you won't easily find such variety and quality for this price in Italy. Besides the usual international breakfast you may find a nic selection of cereals and rice crisps (all boxed Kellogs and alike) to sink in your milk and a nice selection of home made chococakes and chococookies.
You may ask the waiters for a good espresso or cappuccino instead of the cheap coffee in the tanks.
The restaurant is also very good, the menu is often changed (I have been there serveral times from Jan to Aug 2006), it includes a chocomenu, the menu of the day but of course you may ask your favourite combo à la carte.

Overall the hotel is pretty good and surely worth the price, weak spots are the location (far from the downtown), and the noisy road in front of the hotel (always ask for rooms looking at the rear, not in the front of the hotel), the parking space in front of the hotel is always full and the garage in the basement isn't surveilled.

  • Liked — Breakfast, free wi-fi, service
  • Disliked — Noisy front road
