I booked this hotel through the Leading Hotels of the World, and that should have been my first warning. The Leading Hotels of the World travel agent did not function as a leading travel agent when problems arose during my stay.. What were the problems?

Upon arrival, I was shown to a series of dirty rooms when I had booked a deluxe room in an already overpriced and old hotel. The room that I eventually took after being told that there were no more to see was dirty, in need of redecorating, and had thick layers of black mould growing in the bathroom. The next morning I asked for the bathroom to be thoroughly cleaned. They managed to removal all visible mould. Why was this not done before the room was let out? Why is there mould growing in a 5 star hotel. Surely everyone knows that this is a health hazard? I could still smell the damp and the smell of the mould spores. I spent another couple of nights in the same room. I discovered another wing to the room when I saw another guest going up the stairs of what looked like a newer part of the hotel. I asked a very nice hotel manager who fortunately for me was working at the front desk, if I could change rooms. She found me a comparatively nicer room in the new wing with the balconly that I had paid for. I was eventually moved to the room that I had actually been paying for all along. Why was I not placed in this room from the beginning? My only guess is that they wanted to charge over the top for a room that they would not place me in and then re-rent it out. In any case, it is unacceptable that I payed for a higher standard room and was not placed into it. Also, not even in a 1 star hotel, should anyone have to spend a night in a room with mould growing.

The hotel eventually gave me 50% off for the nights that I had stayed in the other room, but to be honest, I should not have had to pay anything for these nights since it was their mistake, and because of the experience with the mould.

The hotel staff are very polite. They try to provide a good service. THe hotel is unfortunately the only so called 5 star hotel in Perugia, but it is not truly a 5 star hotel. Even in the newer part of the hotel which is where I was moved to, it is not cleaned to a 5 star standard. I found someone else's hair on the floor after I had moved in. I made a complaint and the assistant manager really made an effort to ensure tha the room was cleaned every day after that.

I was paying a lot per night for the room, and don't expect to have to worry about these things at those rates.

The LEADING HOTELS OF THE WORLD was a rip-off. When I called them to complain about the problems they didn't want to know. I had paid them a premium for their services, and yet everything that they promised me turned out to be promised without them knowing anything about the hotel. They do not represent leading hotels of the world, and my advice to anyone considering booking through them is DON'T.

Other problems - I am still trying to resolve the issue regarding the payment made to Telecom Italia for internet service. It only works at the hotel. Do not pay for long periods, because it may not be usable outside of the hotel. Telecom Italia are dishonest and will nto return the money that you have paid even if their service doesn't work throughout Italy.

  • Liked — Location - very central
  • Disliked — Hotel is old. Teh newer wing is nicer, but they charge for these rooms and then move people into the older part of the hotel.

We spent 3 nights at the Brufani in September 2007, the location was excellent and the staff were very good, the pool is lovely and the front desk was very helpful, although we felt the room was overpriced and a little tired. Breakfast was good except for the coffee, which was the worst I have tasted in Italy! If you can get a good deal I would recommend staying here but at 250 euros a night I would say go somewhere else.

Stayed here four five nights in August in a junior suite at the top corner of the hotel with views over the two vallies. Superb room, bath tub, sperate shower, verandahs, sitting area, two Tvs. Good breakfast but evening resaturant was too formal for us. Nice bar with outside sitting area on piazza. Elevated position meant there was often a breeze. Very small pool in basement looked interesting but whenever we wanted to have a swim it was occupied by children and families. Two children and two adults virtually filled the pool.

  • Liked — Superb views
  • Disliked — Stuffy formal restaurant

The Brufani is an oldy-world, expensive, hotel located in the centre of Perugia. The rooms on the south side - in one of which we stayed - provide wonderful views of Perugia and the surrounding countryside. The rooms are large, include a king bed, (generally) excellent bathroom, and the service is excellent.

We stayed one night between leaving our timeshare in neighbouring Toscana and returning home from Perugia's tiny but efficient and friendly airport. Arrived about noon. No problem with early check in, but the witty reception clerk told us we had committed an offence by bringing our car into the zona limitato. (They get you to sign a waiver at no cost. This is common in Tuscan and Umbrian hill towns). Wonderful portiere unloaded our car from the front door and whisked our luggage to the excellent room. Wanted to park out front (free) but the Saturday market pre-empted that. The car was put in the garage. We were told it would be moved later. It was not. However, despite the ominous €31 euro per night price tag, we were not charged on check out.

We are regular visitors to Perugia, so we spent most of the day walking, sipping coffee and eating gelati. All wonderful sociological experiences!

Showering for dinner identified some problems with the bath drainage and the fittings, but these had been efficiently fixed on our return from dinner, with apologies. (We took the advice of a previous review and made reservations at Il Padrino. This is not a tourist restaurant; all diners, except us, were locals. Hardly haute cuisine; turned out to be a set meal, incl. wine and coffee - all for €50. As in most restaurants in Tuscany and Umbria, the food was more than passable, although the wine list is very limited.)

Comfortable bed; great night's sleep; excellent breakfast. (Be sure to ask for Italian coffee delivered to your table, not the weak stuff in the urn). Friendly and helpful dining staff; although it helps a lot if, like us, you have a smattering of Italian and enjoy being in Italy. Efficient checkout in the morning - bags loaded into car; directions to airport, and so forth. 15 minutes to the airport on a quiet Sunday morning.

International newspapers are available in the lounge + fast wifi on the ground floor, and internet in rooms (€3 ph).

All in all a very pleasant end to our holiday. We will be returning next year!

We were very disappointed with our stay in the Brufani Palace, which has a 5 stars + Luxe rate.
The location in the heart of the centre is great but the hotel is not very clean and the airconditioning is very very old and noisy! So we couldn't sleep with it on but if we opened the windows we had even more noice of the street below.
Breakfast is not so high standard as it should be.
The swimmingpool is very hot and small and again very noisy because of the fitness facilities which are in the same room as the pool.
3 our 4 stars should be the maximum score for this hotel!

Hope someone has a better proposal for a stay in Perugia!
