“Don't be put off by first sight!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013 via mobile

When we arrived after tramping around town the menu and the restaurant looked intimidatingly expensive with some very chi-chi and extensive menus on offer. We decided to talk to the receptionist in any case. Lovely lady explained you can have anything on the menu from just a salad to the fully month. Had a fantastic bowl of gnocchi with asparagus and basil and some local perch with salad. All lovely and reasonably priced. The maitre'd appeared as if he stepped out of aBateman cartoon but belied the look with delightful and wine recommendation

“As always totally outstanding....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

This place is in a class of its own. It remains consistently outstanding. The service is an art form.
The welcome from the owner and his daughter and staff is always enthusiastic and passionate.

The food is superbly presented, full of flavour, perfect quantities, often locally sourced, fresh...faultless. There is a wine list of huge choice pitched to suit every pocket.

Would we return...we do every time we are in Italy.

The coffee at the end of the meal matches the rest perfect.

The ambience of the place is delightfully classically Italian.

My reservation about recommending this place,,,It might be full next time I arrive.

Bravo!

“THAT WONDERFUL FEELING WHEN EVERYTHING IS JUST RIGHT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

After climbing the steep streets of Medieval Gubbio for a while, we are ready for a serious lunch and are attracted by the divine aroma coming out the doors of The Taverna Del Lupo. It is 2 pm and we are hungry!

Already just stepping inside makes us feel good: we are welcomed by the Owner who takes us to a pleasant quiet table with crisp linen, antique lightening features and sterling silverware. The customary question of "carbonated or plain water" done with, we are presented with two cute little plates containing some kind of crisp fried bread topped with local prosciutto. Munching on this, we review the menu and decide to go for Menu Degustazione Eugubino (a tasting menu with local specialties, not only Umbrian, but specifically from Gubbio).

The feast starts with Letto di cappone tartufato. This is a rooster that has been castrated so that its meat stays tender and tasteful, a tradition dating from Ancient Greece. The delicate white meat is served on a bed of fresh vegetables, including the local specialty, tartufo mushrooms, marinated in olive oil, herbs and lemon and it is a delight.

This is followed by another piece of fried bread with prosciutto and a small bruschetta with fresh tomatoes. As I write this, I remember the succulent taste of the bruschetta and it feels my mouth with water.

Next comes Fonduta di caciotta al tartufo di stagione. It is a mild local cheese melted with beshamel and herbs and covered with sliced tartufo.
Our pasta course is Raviolini in salsa di asparagi e porcini, a sublime house made pasta filled with tender asparagus and porcini mushrooms.

At this point we follow the Vermentino di Gallura (my prefered white wine from Sardegnia) with a local Montefalco riserva.
The red wine recommended by the Sommelier is a perfect match for the Tagliata al rosmarino, a veal tenderloin, grilled with rosemary, sliced and served on a bed of grilled vegetable, perfumed by the exquisite Umbrian Olio di Frantoio: "most consider this the premier olive tree for making extra virgin olive oil; also used for Greek-style table olives in brine".

And it is not over yet, our desert is Mille foglie al caramello, an airy delight of a pastry, followed by macchiatto (espresso with 2 drops of steamed milk), then more cookies and a "liquore d' Umbria", a "digestivo" made with local herbs.

We realize that we have just spent two and a half hours in a most enjoyable lunch and have a long chat with the owner, Comm. Rodolfo Mencarelli. When he finds out we are from New York, he tells us he has another restaurant by the same name in Pensylvania. Small world! Then we review NYC restaurants we like, Gramercy Tavern being our "Numero Uno", his preferred being Felidia, not a bad choice but the kitchen is a bit too rich for me nowadays. Then we find out that Taverna Del Lupo in Gubbio is one of only two Umbrian restaurant featured in "Best Italian Restaurant in Italy" (ORPI, 2012).

The Sommelier takes us to cellar where he can see his most praised possessions: 1999 Brunello di Montalcino, right next to a 2001 Ch. Petrus Bordeaux.

I am putting this place on my Stellar List: easily among the top five best eatings in Italy, and I have been traveling and eating in Italy for a long long time...
