“Loved this Simple, Peaceful Church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2014

My family and I loved this little church built on the Greek cross plan. Its five domes make the space feel much larger than it is. There's a door to the left of the main altar that leads to an area where St. Frances' family lived. This is a church where it seems especially relaxing to linger. Paintings (frescoes?) in the chapels are interesting, in particular the piece depicting Adam, Eve, the serpent, and God.

“St Francis' home!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

This church was built on top of the places that St Francis lived....and also where he was imprisoned by his father. There are great corridors that show where he was and also where his father worked. It has the main family house right behind it. Whats amazing about this church is that there is Eucharistic Adoration frequently throughout the week. A beautiful church to visit! (Don't miss the statues of St Francis' parents right outside the church) :)

“The history is amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

This is church is the original home of St. Francis. The moving part of this church is the cell which is said to be the place where St Francis was imprisoned by his father for giving his belongings away, it is so tiny.

“Beautiful church, very peaceful ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

This is a lovely church and was the original home of St. Francis & his father. This church contains a tiny cell said to be the place where St Francis was imprisoned by his father for giving his belongings away to paupers. The prison reminds us how we can imprison our hearts and our spirit in a life that is too busy and distracted from our true selves. Meditate on freedom and simple peace in this beautiful place.

Down the lane to the left of the church is a little oratory, San Francesco Piccolino, which is where St Francis was born. This is worth visiting as is the museum next door to it. You will see many implements and artifacts from that time incl chastity belts for both males and females!

“Don't miss the oratory of San Francesco Piccolino too”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

Underneath the Chiesa Nuova you can see the remains of the Bernardone house (home of St. Francis & his father). Down the lane to the left of the church is a little oratory, San Francesco Piccolino, which is supposedly a marker for his place of birth. This is worth visiting as well.
