The hotel itself is fine. Nothing spetacular, but I do like the charming area it is in. It is only 10 minutes to the piazza and my room has a nice partial view to the surrounding hills, and the little italian houses across from our hotel.
Our very simple and blah breakfast was brought to our room in a basket. Il Casato feels exactly like it is, a residence and not a hotel. The room was clean and simple. There's a little but of cobweb on the ceiling, but I'm also a neat freak and most people might not have even noticed it. My test of the hotel is always the bathroom. This hotel passes since it is clean enough for me to walk around barefoot and not had to tiptoe or squeeze in my shoulder so that I'm not touching the walls. Since this is not the Ritz, I felt it is clean enough but not "wowed".
There's also a lot of climbing up the stairs so be warned. Let me explain : There are two entrances, one on each side of 2 parrallel streets. The receptionist is on the lower side (Via Dupre), which means you'll have to carry your luggage upstairs to your room. After that you can exit from a door on the higher side of the hotel. It's probably best to call the hotel when you arrive to save yourself some trouble if you're in doubt.
What makes this hotel above average is the service. The two women who tended the front desk are fantastic. They are prompt, polite, friendly and warm. Overall a most pleasant stay in a most wonderful city.
