“Great hotel and staff with one minor problem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

This is a first class hotel and Ronny emailed me direct re our room as we booked I direct with the hotel and it is definitely the best way to reserve a room. Whilst the hotel is fairly large it is both friendly and professional. The rooms are superb and so is the breakfast. There was only one issue and am am awaiting the response from Ronny re the damage to my car which is minimal. I was on the terrace drawing when one of the cleaning ladies pushed her trolley into the area where they store there cleaning trolleys after use. I saw her collide with her trolley with my new car and she knew she had caught the car as she stopped and checked. Later I went to look and the was a very very small chip of paint missing. I reported it in writing to reception and the women from reception took my written incident report and also photographed the chip. She informed me last Friday she would ask the management to get in touch. As of today eg 20 June 2013 no one has even though I emailed Ronny yesterday. I called at the garage to buy a color paint pencil and was told it costs 20euro and the chip would disappear with on application. Of course I will pay for it myself but am interested to see the response from the hotel. This is a real test of their customer care.

We chose this hotel for a photography workshop we were conducting in Tuscany and could not have selected a more perfect hotel. From start to finish, all the many details and needs of our group were handled with efficiency and grace. Every request, every problem, every favor was answered with a "no problem." Susanna at the front desk even emailed the local police office for us to see if she could get a traffic violation excused after our GPS led us into a restricted zone at one of the city gates. Our rooms were spotlessly clean, the beds very comfortable, and we also fresh fruit and a bottle of wine waiting for us when we checked in. The breakfast, which was included in the room price, was excellent, and we enjoyed many an evening on the terrace, watching the sunset as we sipped a cocktail or two. The location is perfect--short walk to the Via de la Citta (main walking/shopping street) and they have on-site parking, which was also included in our room price. I would like to especially single out Andrea and Susanna at the front desk, Marco in the restaurant and Sara at the Terrace Bar for providing service above and beyond expectations. If you are going to Siena, no need to look any further than Hotel Siena--it's a true gem!

Dear Julie,

Well well well…..now I’m really in trouble. I don’t know what to say, let me tell you just that this is what we are working for!

We work hard to give an experience to our guests not just a good treatment, we want to be a good memory and we would like to see the people come back again to our hotel, to become friend of them. Well, I think we did it so with you.

I’m not going to point out anything, you did a great job instead of me and from Andrea, Susanna and all of us a huge hug from Siena.

See you soon

Ronny

The hotel lies at the edge of the city 20 minutes stroll from the centre. Don't be tempted to walk there if you arrive by train as its a bit of a hike over uneven cobbles and not recommended in hot weather. Thankfully we took a taxi for 10 euros which was money well spent. The reception is bright and airy and staff are friendly and very helpful. The rooms are spacious, well appointed, clean and in good decorative order. Ours on the 7th floor had fantastic views over the city wall to glorious countryside beyond. The maximum daytime temperature during our stay was 29 centigrade which meant that at night, air conditioning wasn't as cold as we would have wished for which made sleep difficult but not impossible. Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice on the cold table but the only hot food readily available was scrambled or hard boiled eggs and bacon. Hot beverages were available from a machine, the lack of waiter service in this respect was disappointing. Overall a good hotel for 4 stars, not the best we've encountered, but certainly not the worst!

Room Tip: 7th floor rooms to the back of the hotel have great views

We Loved this Hotel from the Free Parking to the amazing breakfast spread to the large room we couldn't of asked for more. We liked it so much we stayed an extra night. Without question the best hotel we stayed at in our entire time in Italy. There is a bit of walking involved to get the center of town but the views along the way make it easy.

Room Tip: Stay on the side that overlooks the countryside/wall.

We drove to this hotel from England, having booked months ahead and achieved a discount for an early booking (direct with the hotel). We booked a superior room, but were upgraded on arrival to a deluxe room, which had magnificent views of the surrounding countryside looking away from Siena. The reception staff are very warm, welcoming and obliging. The breakfast buffet was a good selection, however I don't each much more than cereal, but the staff were obliging in bringing me cappuccino freshly made with soya milk and bananas. I could suggest that if you prefer to avoid crowds at meal times to utilise the dining room on 4th floor for breakfast - it has the same food selection but is much quieter.

We appreciated the hotel's position in a quiet part of town, that attracts relatively less tourists but is still close enough to walk to everything, if you don't mind hills.

If you'd like to find a quiet spot for a merenda, pranzo, or colazione walk up the hill from the hotel, you will reach "le due Porte" turn right without entering the town gate, and about 100m on your left is a cafeteria, which is frequented by locals. It is across the road from Pensione Rivizza. The service is very good and more reasonably priced than the centre. This small bar/cafeteria is family run and has great outside tables with drinks or ice cream etc.

Rented a car in Florence and drove to Siena. Tip: Get a Garmin or other navigation device to find anything while driving. It saved us and made finding hotels like the Athena very easy. The staff could not have been nicer. Spoke English and were very knowledgeable about attractions and restaurants. They made a late reservation for us and we left for touring the city. When we came to the restaurant, the owner apologized for not providing us with a better table because they were all booked and had to scrounge to get enough tables and chairs for our group of 6 together into a workable arrangement. Since we were out of communication with the restaurant or hotel, they could not contact us to tell us the restaurant was fully booked. It appears the Athena had the "clout" to assure us that the restaurant would do what it took to accommodate us.

The rooms were clean and neat and the views were spectacular from our window. They have a restaurant (we did not use) in case you are out touring late by car and don't want to walk into the city to eat. The location is great for those with a car because you can drive to the hotel and not violate the ban on driving within the confines of the city. Since the hotel is right on the edge of the area where it is OK to drive but still be close enough to walk into the city. I would stay here again without hesitation when visiting Siena.

Room Tip: Book well in advance of your stay via Booking.com to get a room. Ask for the side that faces out of...

Quiet location within the city walls. 5 mins walk to Duomo & further 5 mins to Piazza del Campo. All you would expect of a modern 4 star hotel & more. Room [ours Deluxe] very high standard with especially comfortable beds. Healthy breakfasts with lots of choices. Dining room very good for dinner & good value. We booked early & got a Deluxe room on the 8th floor overlooking the Tuscan countryside - was a bargain at 145 euros per night including breakfast. Overall could not fault the stay in any way. Very highly recommend.

Room Tip: Deluxe Rooms 804, 806 & 808 have good views of Tuscan countryside.
