My wife and I stumbled on Pizzeria di Nonno Mede in 2007 off an alley near the Santa Caterina church in Siena. What a find! The view from outdoor tables across to the duomo and the tower of the Palazzo Publico was unmatched! The pizza delicious, the wine list varied and reasonably priced, the service friendly and helpful... So a return visit was something we both were looking forward to during our trip to Italy in May, 2013.
Well ... the view is still magnificent. But sometime during the interim, the modest pizzeria with good food and a great view decided it was Something Special - and everything about it except the view declined. Management had installed plexiglass barriers and huge heating elements around the terrace, which somewhat blocked the view, and certainly made things noisier. Our plan was to share a pizza and then share a salad and a bottle of wine. We had just finished telling the waiter which pizza we wanted when he interrupted us to say we couldn't share a pizza, we had to order one each. The attitude was absolutely "Stupid Tourist" and very insulting. Finally - and through another slightly more helpful waiter - we got across that we were, in fact, ordering two things, so we weren't going to be in violation of their "policy". Then they brought the pizza and the salad at the same time, when we specifically asked them to bring them in succession. And the pizza wasn't really that good - the crust was like a cracker, and the toppings, while flavorful, lost whatever warmth they came with very quickly.
In sum - food: average at best. Winelist still good. View fantastic. Service - awful. It's sad to see a place that once had so much going for it decline by not caring about its customers.
