“vs. San Marco Hotel...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

I had the opportunity to stay in 2 different hotels in Siena because our trip had to be broken up in the middle (we had to go to the other hill towns for our hot air balloon reservation). We stayed 1 night at MAX Hotel, and the other 2 nights we stayed in San Marco Hotel. Both are equally rated and because I was torn on where to stay, I thought I'd stay in both places so I can compare and tell you which I like best... which is hard. This review will also be posted for San Marco Hotel.

I'd say that Max Hotel is good, and San Marco is ok.

Both are modern. Rooms and beds are great at both places. Bathrooms, however, were OK, but I'd say Max Hotel was better. I recommend bringing/wearing shower slippers as the showers are a little grimey. The shower at San Marco leaked badly and the tiles were icky.

I was greeted at Max Hotel by a friendly girl who gave me a map, offered suggestions on where to eat, where to park for free to get into Siena, etc. Overall, she was very helpful. I had to wait about 10 min before someone finally greeted me at San Marco. It was very frustrating. Finally, we were greeted by a grumpy lady with curly hair. Wasn't helpful at all, didn't even offer a map or anything. Definitely a different experience than at Max Hotel.

Both breakfasts are good... San Marco offers more variety in tarts/pies, and juices.

Location... I thought San Marco was better located off the freeway and next to multiple gas stations. Both hotels take time to get into the Siena city center.

Anyway, as you can see, both are good/bad in different ways so its hard to say where I would recommend that you stay. If someone held a gun to my head and forced me to choose, I would go with Max Hotel.

Very nice, modern and clean hotel, just 5 minutes away to the center of Siena by car. Taxi from the hotel to the center of Siena one way costs 12 evro. Hotel is a modernly equipped, very clean, and it has very good breakfast. Rates are in 2013 July 109 euro pro night for 3 person(two adults and children). Room are nice and big and very clean. The room has a fridge.
In room there is only one charger for power, you have no where to charge the iphone, ipad and macbook at the same time. The negative side of the hotel is bathroom . You can not use a normal toilet. WC / toilet you can not use normal because there is not enough space for leg (see photo). Hotel has its own parking space . Internet works well in the room too.

Suitable for a business traveller, but this place has more the feel of a North American motel than an Italian hotel. The staff was quite helpful. The room was adequate, but nothing special. Disappointing for a four star hotel, and calls into question whether that rating is accurate.

Max hotel is a good hotel. The location is a little uncomfortable for those who arrive by car, because the hotel is not in the center. However, there is a bus stop nearby.
The room was comfortable and spacious, bed very big and comfy. The bathroom was rather small and uncared.
The hotel also has a restaurant with quality products and fair prices.
Discreet, courteous staff.

The hotel rooms are great, clean and spacious. Fully equipped bathroom with bidet. But it is so far away from town. The buses at night stops early so if you are out in town for a meal- good luck walking back (up hill)!! Great place if are have business or conferences nearby. Not so good for tourist.

1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2011

We stayed in this hotel a couple of weeks ago, and were hoping for 4-star standards. Unfortunately, Italian star ratings are inferior to international standards, and this place is a perfect example of shabby standards. When we checked in, we asked how much a double room was and were told it was €120 per night, however, when we informed the girl at reception that it was €90 on hotels.com she said that the best she could do was €95. Consequently, we logged into hotels.com right in front of her and booked the room for €90. It states on the hotel website that wifi is available, however, they will charge you €6.50 per hour for the privilege. The computer in the foyer costs the same. As it was late at night we headed straight to the hotel restaurant, where I ordered a mixed grill. I might as well have ordered a plate of dogfood, which was in-keeping with the standard of Italian food so far on our trip. The waitress was nice, very helpful, but thats where it ends!!! This hotel is in the middle of nowhere interesting, reception are rude and the cleaners constantly rang our room the next morning to get us out at 11am sharp. When we answered the phone, there was no reply!!! This place is a dump, a 4-star rip-off with absloutely disgraceful font desk attitude. Dont stay here...

Room Tip: Stay in another hotel...

We arrived at Siena by train on Saturday 17 September 2011. There is a bus stand outside the station and bus numbers 3,10,17 and 77 stop straight outside the hotel. Do not try and walk it is rather a steep hill. Ony disappointment was that we arrived at this hotel on a Saturday evening when the restaurant was closed. However they did appear to provide meals for coach parties that arrived the same evening. Be warned there is absolutely nowhere within walking distance to either eat food or purchase food to eat in the hotel. Apart from this the hotel is out of the town but buses to the station and the tourist part of the city that stop outside the hotel are very frequent even on a Sunday morning.

The breakfast was good and the room clean to a high standard.

Room Tip: If arriving Saturday without transport make sure you have some food with you.
