“Very central and friendly budget hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

The Cadogan "Tuscany" guide curiously rates this hotel as very expensive. It isn't, tho we did get a special offer. Indeed it's quite cheap, we thought. The view from the window of our room (44) was luminous with the sun shining on the jumble of houses going up a hill and the dome and tower of the duomo rising above it. The room was good sized tho very plain. We once stayed in a perfectly ordinary hotel in Trento which became memorable for me, and where I intend to revisit, because they had reproduced on one wall a secular fresco from the Bishop's palace. It's a simple way to make a room memorable and certainly Siena with its wonderful frescos would lend itself to the same treatment.

As is common with less expensive hotels, it lacks much common space. The breakfast room is not accessible for the very disabled (Siena would not be a good place, anyway, for those with disabilities.) Staff were friendly and efficient, breakfast copious tho rather boring, good internet.

Room Tip: The lift only goes to the first floor.

“Pretty good hotel in a beautiful small town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

If you're planning a vacation to Siena, I would definitely recommend Hotel Duomo. Whenever I'm on vacation, I always think the hotel's price for a given location is the number 1 factor. And on that scale, Hotel Duomo is great. A five minute walk from Il Camp and from the Piazza del Duomo, there's not much to dislike about the location. We took a bus to Siena from Florence, and the cab ride to the hotel was only about 10 Euro. And, in hindsight, would only have been about a 10 minute walk. Really the location could not have been better, and the rate we got I thought was low, so it seemed a very good value.

The hotel itself is pretty basic but is everything you'd need. The rooms were clean. Ours had a fantastic view out the back of the hotel to the Duomo. The hotel was quiet. They had in room free wifi, which was the best wifi signal of any hotel we stayed at in our 2 weeks in Italy.

The room itself was a little small, but it was fine for just myself and my wife, and we spent very little time actually in the room.

The breakfast was pretty basic but OK. There was no hot food, but they had a selection of meats, cheeses, rolls, cereals, and other cold items. They do not have a restaurant on site, but there are a number of places to eat within walking distance.

Everyone working at the hotel was very pleasant, although we did not make any difficult or unusual requests of them.

All in all it was a nice place to stay for a couple nights on vacation when your main focus is sightseeing, and I would definitely recommend it.

“Hotel Duomo 4 Nite Stay - October 2012”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Duomo for four nights in October. The hotel is situated perfectly, just a short distance from the town square and an easy place to explore Siena. We had a 3rd floor suite that looked out to the town of Siena and gave a view of the Duomo, with a view below of a lovely Grotto. The large bathroom and spacious room was bright and decorated in a soft, relaxing green. The small table and chairs afforded a restful place to relax with a beautiful view. "Tony" at the front desk was most helpful, spoke excellent English, and overall treated us as "special guests". Alexandro (the manager) was also very helpful and gave us special service, including providing china, glasses, and silverware so we could have a "picnic" on their rooftop patio (don't miss it for the daytime views and the evening sunsets!). We loved their breakfast, especially the made to order expresso or cappucino, the fresh fruit, and wonderful pastries. Since we had four nights, we took advantage of the local laundry service, and were pleased to have our laundry returned as promised and looking great, a pleasure half way through our Italy trip. Don't miss the Trattoria, on the left as you exit the hotel, just a few steps from the hotel. Excellent food and service, with reasonable prices. - Theresa and Ken-Colorado USA

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room with full length windows for the best views of the Duomo and town.

“Great location and staff, but the property is a little rough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Had a decent experience here, and although there are some definite drawbacks, I'm not sure that there are any better options for the price.

Positives:
-The biggest reason to stay here is the location--it's really a 5-minute walk from any site in the historic portion of the city. Most other budget hotels are much further out (some outside the walls).
-Generous breakfast and working wireless included in the price.
-Staff is friendly and provided great recommendations for where to eat (and made reservations, which always seems so important in Italy)

Negatives:
-If this is a 3-star hotel, I'd hate to see what a 2-star hotel's rooms and public spaces looked like. The hallways and carpets are dirty and the elevator is small, slow and old. Even with the elevator, you'll have to lift and carry your luggage a bit--there are a lot of small stairs to navigate.
-The rooms have not been updated in quite some time, and they definitely should invest some money. You might enjoy it if you get one of the big rooms with a great view (as advertised on their site), but our room was tiny--barely enough room to move around the suitcases.

“Very good staff, but not really a three star hotel anymore”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

I had a good experience from start to finish with the staff at Hotel Duomo. The two or three different front desk employees that I interacted with over the course of my stay were very accommodating, friendly, and welcoming. The lady who worked in the breakfast room was equally pleasant and helpful.

The breakfast service was pretty good from the standpoint of an American staying in an Italian hotel. There was no hot food, but there were plenty of cold options, including cereal, pastries, bread, fruit, yogurt, cold cuts, cheese slices, and several juices (though I do not think there was any plain old orange juice).

The location of the hotel is very good, especially if you plan to see the Duomo or the Piazza del Campo, or shop along the main street.

The front desk gave us a great dinner restaurant recommendation.

Now for some negatives:
They advertise that it is in a 12th-century mansion, and that sounds quaint and charming, but in fact the interior of the hotel does not bespeak 12th century at all. The interior, in fact, is in rather run-down condition. The carpets in the hallways are dirty and worn down. In my bathroom there was black mold on the walls above the shower. The decor of the room was plain and otherwise dated. The water temperature in the shower fluctuated constantly and after a couple of minutes it just went cold.

There were no easily-accessible power outlets in the room. To plug in our devices we had to move the desk, unplug the television, and then take over that plug.

In the end, I felt as if the fairly high rate that we paid was more due to the location than due to the quality of the hotel. I WOULD stay there again -- if I got a much lower rate, commensurate with the quality of the facility.

According to the European star-rating system, this hotel is currently rated at 3 stars. The service was 3+ stars, but the rooms and overall atmosphere were definitely not. I would rate it 2 stars.
