“Not for the first time traveller, but once you go there you will want go come back.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

If you are a first time traveler, stick to the Rome-Florence-Milan-Venice circuit. If you have done that already and want to discover Italy, Siena is a great place to visit. You will see this piazza where in July and August the world famous Palio di Siena happens (horse race around the square, and each horse represents a neighbourhood). And where capitalism started. And where the colour "Terra di Siena" comes from. By all means, this is a must see place. There is not really much to see if you are an attraction-type-of-person, but there is a lot to discover.

You can park in one of the recommended sites and there was a sequence of (free) escalators that took us to the old city. What a treat.

“Unique but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

The piazza is famous for Paleo, the horse race events held twice annually. It is an open area that is slightly sloped. Sit on the brick in the middle of the piazza and enjoy the view. Nothing like it elsewhere but there are so many other places that are more beautiful than the piazza del Campo. Time to move on.

“Awesome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

The Piazza is the centre of it all and includes the access to the Torre del Mangio. The Palio race runs on both the 2 July and 16 August. The restaurants are ok in the piazza but seem to charge 20% service.

“Nice big square!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Beautiful! I loved the fountain, with the great tasting drinking water. Easy to imagine what it would have looked like hundreds of years ago. Great atmosphere. We were there about a week after the Palio, and e winning contrade was parading around the square squirting everyone with water guns. Apparently they had been doing that every night since their victory. Great fun!
