“Like staying with friends....The Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

My wife, daughter and I just returned from Italy where we stayed 6 nights at Ala Mattonata. Outr stay and the hosting of Eliisabetta and Mario and their son Vincent were the highlights of our two week trip. From initial communication, to our welcome and checkin, through our stay to our departure we were treated as family by their entire team and all went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was memorable. They really sweat the details and offer the flexibility to ensure that you have a great experience. They helped with restaurants, both in Siena and in the country side that even with TripAdvisor we would have never found or explored. They helped us fine Tourscany Tours to help with some private wine tasting and more remote city exploring. They even let us take over the kitchen one night to cook at the Villa when the road had worn us down. By the last night we were wine, stories, music and friendship unlike any other vacation. The property itself is impeccable, the food outstanding and the location is just a quick hop to Siena and some of the most beautiful countryside in Italy. To top it off we even had some great adventures with Runa, their dog and some local bunnies. Mario, thanks for a wonderful week and we hope to send some friends over soon. Ciao.

Trip Advisor was the step stone and road guide to organizing our a wonderful vacation in Tuscany in July 2013. Many thanks to those that posted their impressions, comments and recommendations, guiding us to the right choice of accommodation, restaurants and cleared the path to spectacular and impressive visit objectives.
Trip Advisor unveiled to us the perfect accommodation in Siena at the "Relais Aia Mattonata", the perfect hosts that are Elisabetta and Mario, the delicious traditional tuscan food with its paired wine at "Osteria Taverna di San Giuseppe" and "Antica Osteria Da Divo", and has also helped us discover spectacular views across Tuscany, and recommended interesting touristic objectives.

We have spent 4 nights and 5 days at Aia Mattonata. It is hard to imagine how high the quality of the time we have spent there was!... We have had the impression that the owners, Elisabetta and Mario, were guessing our thoughts before we would articulate them, and on top of everything they have guessed our preferences and advise accordingly without failure(!). They really are the highlight of the holidays with their kindness, availability and quality of recommendations that are tailored to each one of their guests. What a great guides they are to help you find the exact restaurant that you prefer, the route with the most picturesque and breathtaking landscape, to advise on where to shop for whatever you need to shop (we wanted shoes, coffee and tuscan and italian delicacies). The official photos posted on Trip Advisor and on Aia Mattonata's own the website describe perfectly the location and facilities and yet the reality is better...
One needs little over 3 hours direct drive to/from Rome to get to the Relais Aia Mattonata and we strongly recommend a GPS to reach the relais and to drive throughout Tuscany.

Even if I echo other comments and I repeat myself, I want to make clear that Aia Mattonata is the ideal holidays destination, a place where comfort, landscape, silence, location and kindness of the hosts join to create the perfect holidays in Tuscany. Our room is perfectly dimensioned, quiet and comfortable, with very well equipped bathroom. The room benefits of a outstanding view over Tuscan rolling hills, with olive tree orchards and patchwork of colors of various ripe crops on fertile and well managed agricultural land. The front garden well groomed and full of enchanting flowers, as well as a welcomed swimming pool offer a stunning panorama of Siena and surroundings. I have difficulties to finding words to describe our much too short stay at Aia Mattonata. What I can say is that you will not regret one single moment the choice of this wonderful place, with wonderful hosts, with an unexpectedly varied breakfast prepared delicately by Natalina. We have enjoyed Runa's happy "good morning"; it is a wonderfully cute and playful yet well educated German Shepherd.

Siena is a beautiful and exhausting town to visit, but… isn't it normal? :-) Actually who cares about being tired when one can benefit of a comfortable swimming pool, free refreshments at the end of a visit trip, and hosts that carefully help you organize (and book) your evenings, dinners or whatever events you might want to spend your night with.

The taxi fare is 15 EUR per trip in Siena so no need to drink and drive. It can be booked by Mario with a 15 minutes notice. Parkings are available and we recommend Sta. Caterina parking since it is gets you very close to the town center and has an escalator that brings you at the foot of the Duomo.

The restaurants that are absolutely worth dinning in or having lunch at are "Osteria Taverna di San Giuseppe" -our favorite- and "Antica Osteria Da Divo"; both of them are highly rated on Trip Advisor. they quality confirmed by Elisabetta and Mario and now commended by us. There are several more other restaurants, cheaper as well as more expensive, but I truly believe that we have hit the best and with best value/offer ratio in town. Osteria Taverna di San Giuseppe offers a great choice of Tuscan traditional food with matching outstanding wines served by experienced and trustworthy personnel. Osteria Da Divo is equally excellent, a bit more formal, maybe. and serving a more "modern" cuisine. Reservation is mandatory for both restaurants and the prices for a delicious 3 course meals range between 100-130 EUR for 2 persons; the wine is not included in this price, but outstanding wines matching perfectly the food start at little under 40 EUR! Although the food was good at Le Logge, we had an unpleasantly long waiting time for the second course hence we cannot recommend it hands down as easily as we do for the two others.

We have chosen a relaxed pace with "short" visit trips that would allow the late afternoon for swimming pool relaxation or siesta. At this pace, we have nevertheless managed to enjoy Val d'Orcia with its Montalcino, Asciano, Pienza and Montepulciano, as well as Val d'Elsa's San Gimignano and Volterra, he last two being pretty crowded; Siena was granted a full day for itself, which was definitely not enough. All these visits would have been half less pleasant if we could not enjoy relaxing moments back at the Aia Mattonata afterwards ;-)

My husband and I stayed at this beautiful and scenic B&B, located about 5 minutes from the city center of Siena. Being a B&B owner myself in Virginia, I cannot express how hospitable and warm Elisabetta and Mario, the owners, are to their guests. Whatever you need, they will ensure you have it. From hotel reservations, to directions, to cabs, they are very, very accommodating and kind. The views from the B&B are breathtaking and a great view of Siena. Simply sit by the pool and take in the view with a glass of wine. A place to relax and unwind - you will not want to leave. Highly recommend.

AMAZING!!! That is really the best way to describe our stay. My husband and I were on our 3rd stop on our honeymoon and just when we thought our trip couldn't get any better, we were dropped off at Aia Mattonata Relais and greated by the wonderful Mario! Mario and his wife Elizabetta made our stay so perfect and memorable. Not only is the hotel gorgeous, the service is 5-star. I'll be honest- I'm kind of a hotel snob and this place blew me away. Here are my highlights!

Highlights:
- Gorgeous hotel with amazing views of Siena
- Maria and Elizabetta are extremely accomodating and thoughtful
- They recommended fantastic restaurants (and drove us there) and a private cooking class we could take.
- Relaxing pool
- The best breakfast we had in Italy

We chose this hotel based on trip advisor recommendations. The best decision we made. A lovely family run hotel with magnificent views of Siena and the Tuscan countryside. The rooms are decorated beautifully, the personal touch service in extremely welcoming, and to top it all, it has a lovely swimming pool to cool off in. Next time we go to Siena, for sure we will stay here again. Highly recommended. Thank you Mario and Elizabeth for a great stay.

Sienna was the last stop of our Tuscany trip and truly the best was saved for last. The accomodations were wonderful and peaceful and Mario and Elizabeta were the most gracious hosts. We took a bus tour of the Brunello region and when the bus went to drop us off at the end of the day the other members of the group got out because the view was so beautiful from the home that they thought it was part of the tour! We very much enjoyed visiting places in the morning and then coming back to such a tranquil setting to relax in the afternoon by the pool. Mario and Elizabeta were not only so nice, but they gave us great advice on places to go. We would highly recommend staying here and hope to return soon ourselves.

Dear MVJR521,
thank you for taking the time to post your positive review and for your kind words about Elisabetta and me.
We’ll never forget that afternoon when all the members of your group tour were in our garden taking pictures and at the same time laughing so much because they understood that they were in a private place and that it was not another stop part of the tour!
And we’ll never forget the bottle of fantastic Brunello that you shared with us.
We do hope we will have the pleasure to welcome you back to Aia Mattonata.
Warm regards,
Mario & Elisbetta

We stayed here for our 20th anniversary this summer. From the moment you arrive you know this is not a regular hotel. You are greeted by Mario and Elizabeta, hosts during your stay, who do everything to make you feel at home. We used it as a base to explore Siena and the hill towns. The evenings at the property are a delight - bring a good bottle of Brunello, prosciutto and pecorino and enjoy total relaxation while watching the sun set over Siena. The rooms are very comfortable, and breakfast is a perfect start for your day - enjoy some of the delicacies from the region, and some breads that Elizabeta herself prepares. If you are looking for a big hotel with 24hr room service this is not it, but if you want a more cozy, personal experience this is it. Car and GPS are a must.
