Trip Advisor was the step stone and road guide to organizing our a wonderful vacation in Tuscany in July 2013. Many thanks to those that posted their impressions, comments and recommendations, guiding us to the right choice of accommodation, restaurants and cleared the path to spectacular and impressive visit objectives.
Trip Advisor unveiled to us the perfect accommodation in Siena at the "Relais Aia Mattonata", the perfect hosts that are Elisabetta and Mario, the delicious traditional tuscan food with its paired wine at "Osteria Taverna di San Giuseppe" and "Antica Osteria Da Divo", and has also helped us discover spectacular views across Tuscany, and recommended interesting touristic objectives.
We have spent 4 nights and 5 days at Aia Mattonata. It is hard to imagine how high the quality of the time we have spent there was!... We have had the impression that the owners, Elisabetta and Mario, were guessing our thoughts before we would articulate them, and on top of everything they have guessed our preferences and advise accordingly without failure(!). They really are the highlight of the holidays with their kindness, availability and quality of recommendations that are tailored to each one of their guests. What a great guides they are to help you find the exact restaurant that you prefer, the route with the most picturesque and breathtaking landscape, to advise on where to shop for whatever you need to shop (we wanted shoes, coffee and tuscan and italian delicacies). The official photos posted on Trip Advisor and on Aia Mattonata's own the website describe perfectly the location and facilities and yet the reality is better...
One needs little over 3 hours direct drive to/from Rome to get to the Relais Aia Mattonata and we strongly recommend a GPS to reach the relais and to drive throughout Tuscany.
Even if I echo other comments and I repeat myself, I want to make clear that Aia Mattonata is the ideal holidays destination, a place where comfort, landscape, silence, location and kindness of the hosts join to create the perfect holidays in Tuscany. Our room is perfectly dimensioned, quiet and comfortable, with very well equipped bathroom. The room benefits of a outstanding view over Tuscan rolling hills, with olive tree orchards and patchwork of colors of various ripe crops on fertile and well managed agricultural land. The front garden well groomed and full of enchanting flowers, as well as a welcomed swimming pool offer a stunning panorama of Siena and surroundings. I have difficulties to finding words to describe our much too short stay at Aia Mattonata. What I can say is that you will not regret one single moment the choice of this wonderful place, with wonderful hosts, with an unexpectedly varied breakfast prepared delicately by Natalina. We have enjoyed Runa's happy "good morning"; it is a wonderfully cute and playful yet well educated German Shepherd.
Siena is a beautiful and exhausting town to visit, but… isn't it normal? :-) Actually who cares about being tired when one can benefit of a comfortable swimming pool, free refreshments at the end of a visit trip, and hosts that carefully help you organize (and book) your evenings, dinners or whatever events you might want to spend your night with.
The taxi fare is 15 EUR per trip in Siena so no need to drink and drive. It can be booked by Mario with a 15 minutes notice. Parkings are available and we recommend Sta. Caterina parking since it is gets you very close to the town center and has an escalator that brings you at the foot of the Duomo.
The restaurants that are absolutely worth dinning in or having lunch at are "Osteria Taverna di San Giuseppe" -our favorite- and "Antica Osteria Da Divo"; both of them are highly rated on Trip Advisor. they quality confirmed by Elisabetta and Mario and now commended by us. There are several more other restaurants, cheaper as well as more expensive, but I truly believe that we have hit the best and with best value/offer ratio in town. Osteria Taverna di San Giuseppe offers a great choice of Tuscan traditional food with matching outstanding wines served by experienced and trustworthy personnel. Osteria Da Divo is equally excellent, a bit more formal, maybe. and serving a more "modern" cuisine. Reservation is mandatory for both restaurants and the prices for a delicious 3 course meals range between 100-130 EUR for 2 persons; the wine is not included in this price, but outstanding wines matching perfectly the food start at little under 40 EUR! Although the food was good at Le Logge, we had an unpleasantly long waiting time for the second course hence we cannot recommend it hands down as easily as we do for the two others.
We have chosen a relaxed pace with "short" visit trips that would allow the late afternoon for swimming pool relaxation or siesta. At this pace, we have nevertheless managed to enjoy Val d'Orcia with its Montalcino, Asciano, Pienza and Montepulciano, as well as Val d'Elsa's San Gimignano and Volterra, he last two being pretty crowded; Siena was granted a full day for itself, which was definitely not enough. All these visits would have been half less pleasant if we could not enjoy relaxing moments back at the Aia Mattonata afterwards ;-)
