A special birthday dinner was just what we needed! Great location overlooking Tuscany hillsides. Food was superb, with first class service! If you want to get the benefit of views then book early ( on Internet) to avoid disappointment and remember the earlier you book the longer you'll be able to see the scenery!

If you're looking for a great price, a spotless room which is characterful, comfortable and in a great location then you can't go wrong here!

We found the place by complete chance - another restauranteer, who was closed that night, pointed us to the Vecchie Mura restaurant and, while we were having dinner, we noticed the 3 relatively newly refurbished rooms for rent so grabbed one there and then.

Current price is 60 Euro per night (as of April 08). Room 1 is best from a views perspective but is also slightly nosier than Rooms 2 and 3, although once it's past around 10pm at night, the restaurant kitchen quietens down and you're left in silence. We stayed off peak so it was a pretty secluded town in the night anyway, but even on peak we wouldn't expect the rooms to be overly noisy.

For the record, we reckon the restaurant downstairs is one of the best in the village too - great pastas and steaks!

A few tips - while the rooms are as nicely done out as many 3 star hotels we've stayed at in Italy, the facilities are basic. There's a small TV (forget Cable!) and there was no hairdryer or showergel etc in the bathroom. Parking is available but it's across the other side of town (you can't park in San Gimignano itself wherever you stay apparently). It's maybe a 7 min walk so no biggie. Just worth being aware so you can come prepared - it certainly wouldn't stop us recommending it or going back.

Le Vecchie Mura is mainly a restaurant but the owners also rent a couple of rooms. It's right on the edge of San Gimignano giving fabulous views over the beautiful Tuscan countryside. The restaurant also has a terrace area with equally good views and wonderful food.

The room (Room No. 1) was recently decorated, very pleasant and with an ensuite. The only slight negative was that it was above the restaurant kitchen which was noisy if you were trying to get an early night.

The owners were very friendly and helpful. They spoke little English and we speak very little Italian, but they were very good at getting their message across. We booked by email, and at 50 euros per night it's fantastic value for money.

We arrived on a Saturday afternon in November and were given a great, spacious,
clean double room with ensuite and lovely views over the countryside. This place
is far from the crowds, although I imagine in summer the rooms may be a little
noisy due to the outside seating from the restaurant downstairs. The owner
didn't speak English and we only spoke a few words of Italian, but we managed to
check in without any problems and organise to park our car in their free carpark
about a ten minute walk away. We would strongly recommend this place.
