“Lovely B & B in beautiful San Gimignano”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

Casa di Giovanna is a lovely unpretentious B & B - our room was a great size, really comfortable and clean, with a super view right onto the main street. Giovanna doesn't speak English, and we don't speak Italian, but we managed to communicate sufficiently well through hand gestures; she is a friendly and gracious host, and makes the tastiest bruschetta for breakfast. If we are lucky enough to find ourselves back in San Gimignano we wouldn't hesitate to stay with Giovanna again.

Good value for money right in the main street of San Gimignano. Giovanna does not speak a word of English and the breakfast is rather light...other than that the room was clean, Giovanna is friendly and its right in the main street of SG (was a bit noisy the first night but then very quiet the second). If you want to experience the wonderful admosphere in SG, this place is ideal.

La Casa di Giovanna was better than I expected. My husband and I spent four nights there. We could breath the atmosphere of the medieval town, since we were in one of the old buildings of San Gimignamo. Our room had a view of the little main street, it was noise sometimes during the night, but it didn´t bother us. The room was very big, with an ensuite bathroom. Everything very clean, fresh towells every day smelling pleasantly. I should say that I missed a bigger mirror. Senhora Giovanna, the owner of the house was adorable, a very nice lady who tryed realy hard to understand my poor Italian vocabulary, but we comunnicated pretty well. The breakfast was simple but good. And we didn´t have any problems with the parking. As promissed when I booked the room, Senhora Giovanna told us where to park and gave us the ticket to pay it. We had our keys to come and go any time from the house. I would certainly recommend to my friends this B&B.

But for the lack of parking; the bedroom, service and location deserve the maximum rating. My partner and I found La Casa di Giovanna, extremely comfortable, spacious, inviting, and clean. The high wood beams ceilings, the slightly crooked floor, the tall windows with shutters overlooking the main road; helped me to experience, in tiny part, how life must have been like in this charming medieval town. Giovanna, our host, was most gracious and accommodating, I am sure that if we had stayed longer than one night she would have given us further information about her delightful home.

The room was in my boyfriend's words, "fab!" Wonderful feeling of space. The windows are not double glazed so you will hear anyone or anything that goes by, but San Gimignanao was surprisingly so quiet in the late evening we slept like babes.

The bathroom was slightly disappointing, understandably much smaller, but with absolutely no shelves or storage space to place one's toiletries.Towels were plentiful but unlike other B&Bs there was no hand soap available, just your typical "hotel type" shower gel sachets. The shower was perfectly fine.

Breakfast is not included in the price, however at €5.50 per person it is worth ordering. It included good black coffee, fruit juice, pre-packaged pastries, fresh cured meats, cheese, bread, butter and assorted jams.

You are asked to leave your room punctually at 10 a.m. but you can safely leave your cases with Giovanna, take a wander around the town, visit the San Gimignano 1300 museum, have a leisurely lunch and come back to pick up your luggage.

If you are coming over by car be warned you can not drive into the medieval town, which is limited to residents only. Moreover, Parking #2 "Montemaggio", the closest to the B&B, is also the most expensive: €20 for the first day. We were very lucky to find a free parking spot at the opposite end of the town, coming from Certaldo and Castelfiorentino, about a 15 minute walk. There are cheaper car parks but all further away from La Casa da Giovanna, so plan ahead!

This is a B&B I would highly recommend to anyone visiting San Gimignano, be it for only a one night stay or for a week. Everything that you may wish to visit in the town is within easy walking distance and it is ridiculously nearby to one of Italy's most famous squares, Piazza Cisterna.

The room was nice, clean, not too many stairs. The bed was comfortable, water was hot and there was a selection of books to read. The person that greeted us was nice but does not talk english. The room had a nice terrace and it was very pleasant to sit outside and have a drink and visit. Breakfast was okay and had meat and cheese. The location was good right in the center of town. It was good value for 65 euro a night. It was nice looking at the shops in the walled city.

Room Tip: ask for the room with the terrace

Me and my husband had booked a room at "La casa di Giovanna" a month before our visit to San Gimignano. When we arrived there, the man who was responsible (I think he was Giovanna's son) took us to another room of another nearby holiday rental and he claimed that he was fixing the baths (and he didn't me email me to warn me). The other room was ok apart from the breakfast which was consisted of packed food and instant coffee sackets layed on the room's table! We demanded that we have breakfast at La casa di Giovanna which of course he accepted as he knew that what he had done was wrong. He also offered us a prepaid ticket for the parking Giubileo we had parked our car. However when we tried to leave the parking area, we found out that the prepaid ticket had expired and was no longer accepted, so we had to pay! as you can understand we are really disappointed from this experience!

This was our second stay at La Casa di Giovanna, the last time we stayed was 5 years ago, we reminded the owner of our disaster with the car parking disc (a long story) and she remembered us. This house is in a stunning location, right on the main street, can be a little noisy if you have a room overlooking the street, which we did on our previous stay, however this time we had a room overlooking the garden and it was very restful, the bed was comfortable and we had a large bathroom. Whilst there is a language barrier it isn't a problem, although for this visit to Italy, I have been taking some Italian classes and it did help. The signora is a lovely lady, very sweet and gentle and made our stay extremely enjoyable, her breakfasts are plentiful, ham, cheese, pastries, bread, jams and yoghurt and a plentiful supply of coffee. When we left she asked us not to leave it another 5 years and gave me a big hug! We can highly recommend La Casa di Giovanna
