“Excellent hotel-warm friendly, great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

We stayed for a week in May-June 2013, and found a friendly atmosphere helpful staff and excellent location for San Gimignano ( 500m away) and touring. The owners were warm and personable and very keen to make our stay enjoyable. The breakfasts were excellent and the room we had with balcony overlooking the Tuscan hills was very special

We stayed 3 nights at this very appealing establishment. The welcome was great, the staff very helpful. The room was large (there are smaller rooms, beware). The room was nicely appointed albeit a bit dark. The cherry was the small veranda overlooking the pool and the vast expanse of the Toscana country side. Breakfast was no more than OK (I've had much better ones in 4 stars hotels). Another drawback was distance from town center. It was quite a walk uphill. All in all I think I'll stay there again for the view.

Room Tip: Ask for the bigger rooms (with the sitting area) and definitely the ones overlooking the valley.

We had stayed here 10 years ago and had fond memories of this hotel. We wanted to see if those memorable qualities were still here and were pleased to find they still exist. With views of a typical Tuscan hillside- including at least 3 winery estates- out your window, and a beautiful pool and small garden, the S.C.is a place of calm in the midst of the tourist hub that is San G. Wonderful breakfast and great beds. Very clean and quiet.

Room Tip: Make sure and ask for a room with a view of the hills.

I checked in on the last night of a week-long trip bicycling through Tuscany with my son. We had decided to splurge for our last night and booked the most expensive hotel in San Gimignano. But after being spoiled by a week of special attention at boutique hotels we were simply disappointed here.
The property is nice enough, rooms are clean, the views spectacular, but the hotel has the cold impersonal feel of a large chain. No special attention, none of the genuine care about our travels that we have experienced elsewhere.
In the end just another expensive hotel where you are charged extra for what others are proud to share for free (a view, Internet).
I recommend you book elsewhere.

This hotel was great for our 4 day stay in May 2013. The gotel is situated less than 5 minutes walk to the walls of San Ginignano and the facilities on offer were great.

The breakfast was plentiful and offered juices, cheeses, meats, cereals, pastries, breads and cooked eggs & fresh coffee on request.

The room (Superior room with country view) was an OK size if the balcony was on the small size. It was clean and made up daily and the view was tremendous.

The pool area and gardens were clean and the sun loungers plentiful for the number of guests.

The staff were friendly without being over bearing and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the hotel.

Not sure why i'm not giving it a 5/5... i just felt the quality of some of the furnishings in the room wasn't up to the standard of some of the other hotels we stayed at on the same trip.

San Gimi is a fantastic town in Tuscany. There is a lot to see and do around it. The hotel is a short walk from the town and close to several car parks if you don't get into one of the free parking spaces at the hotel. There are also a number of spaces the hotel charge for-13 euro per night. We didn't even try for these as a nearby car park charges only 1 euro overnight.
The room was a decent size and had a great balcony with a view over the Tuscan countryside. It was clean and the staff even hung our clothes up in the wardrobe! The staff serving breakfast were also very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the desk staff were not so friendly though they did answer all our questions, but did not volunteer much beyond.
It is an expensive place and the quality could be higher. We could not use the pool due to the poor weather but it might be more pleasant in summer.

Loved the location of the hotel, overlooking the countryside. 10 min walk uphill to town, to buses etc.
Great eating breakfast outside overlooking above and near pool.
The staff were very helpful.

Room small but lovely balcony.

Room Tip: Try and upgrade to larger room.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Relais Santa Chiara is a charming and elegant hotel located in the heart of the rolling hills of Tuscany, between Florence and Sienna. The hotel looks over the splendid, peaceful countryside towards Volterra and is situated just 400 mt. below the city walls of San Gimignano, a town of fairy tales with its 14 medieval towers that testify to a fascinating past. In addition, the strategic location allows one to make day trips to all the major cultural and artistic sites of the surrounding area. The hotel offers 40 rooms, made up of 4 different room types either facing the rear garden or facing the splendid Tuscan countryside. Many rooms have beautiful balconies and our superior rooms have bath with hydromassage. All rooms have air-conditioning, digital TV with international channels, hair dryers and mini-bar. Other services include private parking, a meeting room with a capacity up to 60 persons, Mediterranean garden filled with olive and cypress trees that encompass the swimming pool, which includes a separate, heated mini pool with hydro massage and an inviting and well stocked bar serving an array of beverages and a variety of snacks and light meals. The breakfast is a complete buffet that will certainly satisfy the biggest morning appetite. In the summer breakfast and bar service are available outside on the terrace. Particular attention has been given to the hotel’s furnishings. Some of the most prestige materials make up the guest rooms, such as brier wood and national oak. The public areas breath an atmosphere that’s classic Tuscany. Florentine terracotta covers the lobby which is integrated with a colorful pastel marble mosaic. The famous Serena gray stone is another dominate element found throughout the hotel, like the reception desk and the grand fireplace. Activities available nearby are: walking itineraries departing from the hotel, guided tours of the historic centre, scooter rental, wine tasting (come with light lunch), cooking classes, tennis, horse riding and a 27 hole golf course 18 km away. ... more   less
