I got married near San Gimignano in September. And the day before our wedding, a group of 17 of us decided to go wine tasting.
I'd popped into this place before for a tasting, but hadn't done the full tour so we decided to go back. I pretty much set it all up via their twitter account (@guardastelle1) and then I had to put a deposit down using my credit card. The tasting and tour cost €25 per person and included a tour, tasting of a white wine, two red wines and a sweet wine plus a traditional Tuscan meal.
The vineyard is in a really special location. As it's within walking distance of San Gimignano, you can see the town's towers from the back of the farm which is surrounded by rich Tuscan landscape lush with vines of olives and grapes.
We went in mid September which meant we were lucky enough to see the grapes being picked and prepared. Fausto, who is the husband of the owner, took us around the estate and introduced us to the wine making methods used on the farm. It isn't a huge vineyard and only produces around 20,000 bottles a year, so you can easily walk round the estate.
After the tour, we sat down outside in the sunshine for the tasting. We started with a Vernaccia which is one of the most common white wines you'll taste in the area. Their's is one of the best I tried and we all left with a few bottles under our arms. We also tried two Chiantis. Both made with Sangiovese and Syrah grapes, but one had been aged in French oak barrels so had a more smokey flavour.
The wine tasting was accompanied by a delicious Tuscan meal. To start, we had a Vegetable soup which was rustic and chunky and very delicious. We then had a selection of Bruschette made using the peppery extra virgin olive oil they cold press on the farm. To follow were ham and salami, olives and bread together with some pecorino cheese which Fausto suggested we dress with organic San Gimignano honey.
To end the meal, we had Vin Santo (dessert wine) with Cantucci biscotti for dipping. Theirs is made from Trebbiamo and Malvasia grapes and is quite a deep golden colour and has a warm, organgey flavour.
They ship wine to Europe, America and other international destinations. And, while we were there, we checked into Foursquare and got a discount on the products that we bought.
I would definitely recommend a visit and, if you can, take part in the full wine tour and tasting which takes place at 11.30 each day and lasts 2 hours. I think it's really good value for money and our whole party had a wonderfully special time. Hic.
