“Worth it just to get the view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

The museum in itself was small, but OK. You will still get your money's worth when you walk up the tower and take in the view of the town and surrounding scenery. Breathtaking and simply beautiful.

“Good community museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

Some great Medieval artwork where you wouldn't expect it. See the room where Dante presented his credentials as the envoy for Florence to the local notables.

“first stop in town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

The best thing to do first is head straight for the tower in San Gimignano, the tower not only affords you stunning views but enables you to get your bearings around the town, stairs are open tread but solid construction. once down you have a smattering of art to look at and a small courtyard with well which is nice for photos.

“Two of San Gimignano's top attractions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

The Palazzo Comunale and the climb to the top of the Torre Grossa were the highlight of my visit to San Gimignano, which in turn was one of the highlights of my trip to Tuscany. Both are definitely must sees if you're in San Gimignano. I think they took me about two hours to see, but I could easily have spent another hour between the two if I had the time to spare.

The Palazzo was not as crowded as the rest of the city, most people appeared to consider it an afterthought and headed straight to the tower. The Palazzo/Museo, however is a beatiful building and it has a somewhat small but very nice collection with works by Benozzo Gozzoli, Fillipino Lippi and others, including (my personal favourite) the Maesta by Lippo Memmi.

The tower is not a difficult climb, it does not have it's original stairs, they were replaced with a metal structure that makes it the easiest of the 3 major climbs in the area (easier to climb than the Torre del Mangia in Siena and the Duomo in Firenze), making it the best option for this kind of attraction for people with mobility difficulties. When I visited (late June) the city was crowded but there was no line to climb the tower and the views were stunning, you can see the hill sides, La Rocca, Piazza della Cisterna and pretty much the entire city.

The shared souvenir shop is also a good stop and it has a nice selection of bookmarks, posters and t-shirts as well as some nice (and a bit more on the expensive side) reproductions. For some reason I can't really explain I found this store to be way better than the average touristy junk seller.

“a must when in the tuscany!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

San Gimignano is unique, a "medieval manhattan" surrounded by an amazing tuscanian landscape. I believe we went up this tower (though i'm not sure, anyway, i'm sure the view from any of these towers is awesome) and it's abosutely worth it. you get a view of the other towers, of the medieval town and of the fields and hills around it.
