“Very good hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2010

I really enjoyed staying at Hotel San Ranieri. I strongly recommend this hotel which is charming, designed, trendy and very comfortable! One of the best I never visited!

It was very odd to find this ultra modern hotel in the midst of all the history in Italy. The staff was very polite. We really enjoyed the outdoor oversized chairs and couches in the evening. Be careful, if you close the drapes you could sleep forever in the darkness. Our only complaint would be that the air conditioning is controlled by the front desk and we like to keep our room very cool. We would definitely stay here again should the opportunity arise.

The staff is not friendly. The management of the hotel must know it, because to make up for it, there are pictures of happy staff with helpful quotes littered all over the hotel to replace the sullen team tucked in thier trendy dark pidgeon hole.

Rooms are tiny. I reserved a premium room. They swore it was a premium room but could not clearly tell me how the room offered was any different than the standard Room. I asked twice.

Dinner was hugely expensive +100 Euros for two, Unintersting, not fresh and bland. The restuarant is a trendy "iPody" white plastic cube of hipster playschool furniture but the food just does not follow through. Problem may have been I just finshed a week trip through the hill towns of Tuscany and my standards are just too high for a suburban Pisa guest box.

Lasty breakfast, they serve watered down instant coffee. When we complained about the watery coffee we watched the waitress take the jug from the coffee maker walk into the kitchen and ad dmore discount Coffee crystals. This would have been fine at a Suburban Swindon Motel but not at a hotel that charges 6 euros for beer and 18 euros for a plat of Pasta with canned Truffles.

Stayed here for three nights, as a base for exploring a bit of Tuscany. Booked it after reading here that it was the #1 hotel in Pisa, and finding that hotels in Florence didn’t match it in terms of price and style.

The San Ranieri is easily the most stylish hotel we’ve stayed in - everything is seen as a design feature so even the walls of hotel corridors (normally just a functional section between the ‘good bits’) are covered with glossy, dark silhouettes of Tuscan monuments – and this attention to detail is carried out throughout the hotel.

My main ‘tests of a good hotel’ are in-room toiletries and the food on offer. Both were impressive – with little beauty sets included in the rooms with cotton wool etc as a nice extra, and the continental breakfast featured a wide, perhaps quirky, range of savouries and sweets. Thankfully we were only there for 3 days before tiramisu at breakfast became a dangerous habit to break. The only tiny gripe is that the only coffee available was self-serve American blend and not the delicious Italian stuff available widely elsewhere.

Unless you’re fluent in Italian and can navigate the public transport system (apparently there are regular buses outside the hotel), I’d recommend hiring a car to get around the area. The hotel is only about 10-15 minutes from the airport but it is on the outskirts of Pisa on the other side of a major road or two. When we decided to travel to Florence by train, the taxi fare into Pisa central was about £8.

I think the San Ranieri is not only a top-class hotel for using as a base for exploring, but has reminded us that Italians are still as passionate about design and innovation as they were when designing their many famous buildings centuries ago. If it starts subsiding then maybe folk will be doing funny poses beside it in years to come.

The hotel unique architectural solutions are rather impressive. White color in the lobby and in the room add to the feeling of cleanness and freshness. The rooms are quite spacious and very clean. The bed is excellent! Very comfortable, and the view from the window is just great - trees in blossom in the rays of the spring sun were unforgettable!
The staff was very friendly and really helpful. Great value for money!

Our room had sewer gasses rising from the floor drain in the shower...the entire room stank.....they offered to allow us to shower in another room...not move us....which was a horrible way to treat us.
When we were leaving the next morning...we noticed the sewer smell also in the parking lot....I would never stay in this hotel.
We also felt the bed coils when we tried to sleep.

Everything about this hotel screams ``boutique" and for the most part it succeeds. From the all-white bar area with its very modern white leather sofas to the glass staircase leading to dark, arty hallways to the spartan yet elegant and comfortable rooms, the San Ranieri is a unique alternative to the typical Italian hotel. Our room featured a real queen-size bed, not the typical two twins pushed together. The bathroom with its spacious shower area was spotlessly clean and inviting. As far as service, it was impeccable with a very friendly staff. Breakfast, included in the room rate, featured a great choice of hot and cold items. The only lowlight of our stay was the bright lighting in the restaurant. While I appreciate that it went along with the overall design of the hotel, it was too harsh and uninviting, and at the end of a long day of travel, a more subtle and calming atmosphere would have been more welcome. Still, our room for the night was a mere 89 euros (offseason), so for that rate we would definitely stay there again.
