“Funky style - great contrast with all that history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2008

We stayed at the San Raniere for one night (2 Aug 08) and thought it was great. The 'dingy' corridors noted in earlier reviews seemed quite stylish to me. The walls/doors are covered in dark, glossy, monochromatic prints and the treatment is typical of many boutique hotels.

The restaurant has limted choice (especially for vegetarians) and is unneccessarily expensive but the food was good.

Breakfast is fantastic - I've never had better in any Italian hotel.
We found teh staff friendly and helpful throughout - they even served us lunch on the day we arrived even though the restaurant had closed about 30 mins before we arrived.

The rooms were on the small side but well equipped - except that we couldn;t find any reading lights for the bed. There were certainly no problems with cleanliness and no odd odours to be found anywhere.

We'd certainly go again.

One piece of advice - if you want a traditionally designed and furnished hotel then avoid the San Ranieri. If you're a little more open then give it a try!

Our family of 3 adults and 2 children stayed here for 2 nights in Sept 2007. It is a modern hotel with unusual interior decoration, the most unusual of which being the rather odd darkened hallways. However the rooms are light and good quality with very comfortable bedding.

The highlight of this hotel was the breakfast which is included. They had a huge choice of fresh and delicious produce to choose from including hot, well cooked choices as well. A breakfast of such good quality is rare in Italy in our experiences of travelling there annually for the past 18 years.

The reception staff are efficient but not over friendly but that is fine by us. I'm sure they would offer help if requested.

The only drawback is the location, this hotel can be a good choice for Pisa but you need a car. It's not far from the centre, only a 10 minute drive, but could be a hassle with public transport at nights. Taxi would be the only option and they can be hard to find in Pisa after 10pm.

We are returning to PIsa in Sept 2008 and have been researching other hotels but are leaning (scuse the pun) towards staying at San Ranieri again as it is one of the very few hotels with up to date facilities at a reasonable price in Pisa.

  • Liked — Breakfasts and good quality bedding.
  • Disliked — The dark hallways.

My wife, daughter and I stayed here for 2 nights from 23.07.08. I would not stay here again, even if I was paid to do so!

1. The corridor leading to the room was black and smelly/musty. Perhaps it was the carpet. Whatever it was, the corridor was pitch black with neon lights. The room was truly dreadful. The ceiling and floor were black. The lights, such as they were, were fluorescent. This meant that the room had no proper light in the evening. If you want character and simple charm in your surroundings, this is not the place.

2. Everything is electronically operated, including the curtains and windows. The window does not open far enough.

3. The room smells - again a musty, unclean, dampish sort of smell.

4. You will be charged 3 Euros every time you order any food/drink from room service. The room service is not terribly efficient.

5. The hotel is a bus ride away from the ciry centre. You are far better off getting a hotel that is centrally located. Buses cost 1.5 Euros pp, taxis around 10 Euros to the city.

Pisa is lovely - full of charm and simple character. This hotel was the low point in our holiday. If you want a modern hotel, give this one a miss.

I should start by saying that I do not recommend Pisa. My husband and I traveled with another couple, and we could not leave Pisa quickly enough. If you must stay the night in Pisa, I would recommend this hotel, however. The bed was comfortable and the women at the front desk were helpful. I will say that the decor is a bit odd and functionality sometimes suffers because of it. The bathroom did smell a bit due to poor ventilation and poor shower design, for instance. I do not recommend the restaurant in the hotel at all. The wait staff was rude. The menu was limited and expensive. The maitre'd literally rolled his eyes when we asked for parmesan cheese. I realize this may have been the equivalent of requesting ketchup for filet mignon, but the ravioli I ordered was in desperate need. It reminded me of Chef Boyardee. I would recommend the hotel to someone who absolutely had to go to Pisa, but never the restaurant. If you just want to see the tower (which really is impressive), I would recommend you make it a quick stop en route to another destination.

  • Liked — The comfortable beds, the internet
  • Disliked — The restaurant, the smelly bathroom

We stayed here for 5 nights, made our own way from the airport to the train station on the LAM Blue bus then another Lam Blu bus to the end of the hotel road, all for the cost of 2 euros!
Buy a bus ticket at a tobac shop in station and validate ON the bus in yellow machine, tickets are 1 euro and last for an hour.
The hotel is lovely but needs a swimming pool, great restaurant at the end of the road, watch what you order though, one meal 2 course cost us £55.00! cheap pizzas though, the hotel is VERY
expensive for drinks and meals, go to a local supermarket and get snacks, wine etc., small mini bar +fridge in room with hotels own bits in ( don't use very expensive) Fabulous buffett breakfast, loads of choice and ask if you want coffee, it is free but not on show, only tea. Most of the staff were fab, especially lady who runs the breakfast kitchen, reception no problem, except one short chap who was a misery, the girls were great. The hotel rooms were cleaned everyday and had fresh sheets and towels daily, all air con too. Free shuttle to the airport, (pre-book at reception) does'nt start till about 8am though, that was ok for us as flight back was 09.45am and only takes 10 mins to get there, great driver spoke english, very polite and is studying to be a vet. We had a good deal with 5th night free so room averaged at £50 per night, very good value. The buses are no problem, or the trains, driving is a bit of a nightmare by car but does give you more freedom. We went to Florence by train cost about £7.00 return well worth a visit
I would not recommend this hotel for families as the kids would be bored stiff as nothing for them at all, fine for passing thru or short couple breaks.

far out from the city, get a car as the bust takes a long route in. hotel very modern, some features totally nonfunctional ( corridor doors looking like emergency exits), dark bathroom. noisy (shabby door and concrete floor and ceiling), especially if you have the misfortune to be by the door. complained and was promptly moved to a much better room, with the bed made as a double. better shower than in the first one where the water just flooded the whole bathroom, then sipped into the hallway. strange shower head by the toilet?!. reception staff were pleasant and helpful (regina & another girl, can't remember her name). breakfast excelent with hams, cheeses, fresh fruits, patisserie products, etc, the best one we had in italian hotels! bar staff never there. hotel oddly located in a very residential area, close by the hospital.

Really nice hotel.. for really good value. We booked just a few days in advance and were pleasantly surprised.

You would definitely need a car though if you were to use this as a base to visit Pisa. I was just staying overnight before taking a flight in the morning. Don't think there is any local metro / bus near either.

We were offered complimentary cocktails on arrival and the restaurant looked popular although I didn't eat there. There was a jazz band playin in the evening which I heard from my bedroom which was also really nice.

There are roof gardens with real grass which adds an extra flavour .. The staff were friendly .. the room was fantastic. Extra large shower although not very cleverly designed to keep the water in!

Just one bad thing to report and that was the TV didnt work. and it seems that this is a common problem around the hotel as there were other guests trying to get this sorted also .. So check your tv before you settle in .. as I didn't discover it until after 11..

  • Liked — the design
  • Disliked — no tv
