“Beautiful building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

Really lovely building with lots of character as it is a converted monastery, beautiful surroundings but the room itself is VERY basic so don't come looking for luxury or all mod cons but def worth a visit.

We stayed here in July 2012. We just wanted somewhere cheap and basic to base ourselves as it was going to be a busy few days of sight seeing. It was about a 15 minute walk to the main attractions in Pisa (Leaning towel, etc.) and about 20 minutes to the train station. The church bells rang every morning and it was lovely to wake up to. There was so much character to this place and I hope to go back someday. The staff were lovely and breakfast in the morning in the courtyard was something else. Was like a dream, so peaceful and beautiful. If you're looking for a 5* hotel then this probably isn't for you. If however, you want a peaceful location and somewhere with loads of character and history behind it you will love it! The staff told us of a few local restaurants within walking distance which was lovely. Going to the train station every morning was also lovely as the majority of the way you're walking along the river. If you want to visit another town I would first recommend Lucca, its an old medieval town and just beautiful. We hired a bike each (as much as I didn't want to) but it was amazing, keeps you cooler too! You can ride around the walls of this medieval city in around 40 minutes but could spend days getting lost down all the little streets with something new around every corner. Another place we visited which was a bit further out was Florence. So many beautiful buildings and things to see, although out of Pisa, Lucca and Florence, Florence was the most expensive for food and drinks. Most places you will pay 7euros for a pizza. Sooo cheap and so delicious. Cannot recommend this place enough, lovely staff, lovely location and lovely surroundings.

Room Tip: I wanted to be in one of the downstairs rooms so I could open the doors onto the courtyard, we ended...

We stayed here for two nights in October. Easy walk to main part of Pisa, very affordable and comfortable. We didn't spend much time at the actual hotel, but it was a nice place to base ourselves for a few days. Service was basic but not bad.

I've never stayed in a place with as much character as Santa Croce which we stayed at in November 2010. If you are looking for a hotel with all the mod cons with entertainment on a nightly basis then this isn't the place for you. If you are looking for a place which is quiet, comfortable and peaceful then I'd thoroughly recommend Santa Croce which has retained many of its original features. The rooms were comfortable and basic (with very high ceilings!) with a seperate shower / bathroom. Breakfast was a basic continental breakfast however you can enjoy it sitting outdoors overlooking the cloister.
The Location is idealfor exploring Pisa as it is located away from the main thoroughfares however within walking distance of the attractions and public transport.
In summary, I'd urge anybody seeking a base to explore Pisa to book at Santa Croce. You won't regret it.

Brilliant place in Pisa, with heaps of history. The hotel preserved a lot of it's previous character as a monastery, with a gorgeous cloister in the middle. We stayed there in May 2011. Our room was basic, but perfectly adequate, with small but well appointed bathroom. Breakfast was very nice eaten in the shade of the cloister. Good location, in walking distance of the Tower and close enough to the train and bus stations. Overall a great place to stay, as long as you're after character and good amenities, not luxury.

This is a very basic hotel in that there are no flat screen TV's or Jacuzzi baths...it was a monastery and still retains many of it's original features, rooms are basic but comfortable and the place has a very unique feel.
A basic but adequate breakfast can be had overlooking central gardens.
If you are a Hilton aficionado this is not the place for you, if you love independent, individual, atmospheric but basic places it most certainly is!

This hotel has so much character, as it's a converted monastery.

The staff were friendly and gave us detailed information on any of the questions we asked.

The rooms are basic, so if you're looking for luxury this isn't the place for you, but the surroundings are not something you find in a generic hotel and you will be lucky to find a nicer place for such a good price. Every morning we'd look forward to breakfast in the courtyard - on a bright day it was beautiful.

The only aspect I can imagine other guests not liking is the planes from the airport do fly quite low over, but that's not something that can be helped and the beautiful, interesting hotel more than makes up for it.

Would definitely stay here again.
