my partner & myself have just returned from hotel santa croce after a 3 night stay, it was a lovely experience. I would recommend to couples may be not for young children. There isn't a bar but you can buy your own drinks in the shops & take it back to the hotel, they even have a bottle opener at reception.would love to go back one day truly wonderful, very different to the places we normally stay. Very peaceful.

I stayed at this hotel with my daughter in April. When we arrived it was dark but the garden courtyard was lit up and looked absolutley stunning. The hotel receptionists are very helpful and there is a small snack bar off there wheer you can purchase beer, wine, coffee & snacks. There is no bar in the hotel, but it was pleasant enough to sit outside with a drink on the terrace. The rooms as said before are minimal but adequate. We had a twin room in the new annexe which just had a wardrobe, chair, bedside table & TV, but to be honest we did'nt go to Pisa to sit in our room so were more than happy. The bathroom was quite modern with a power shower. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was a delight, you could take it in the breakfast room or outside on the terrace. There was freshly prepared coffee (any way you liked it) a good selection of teas, juices, water etc. Fresh pastries were on offer along with fresh bread and a good selection of cheeses & hams. There was also cereals, yoghurts and fruit, what more could you want?
The hotel is in a quiet residential area about a 15 minute walk to the centre of Pisa.
We visited Florence while we were there and would have prefered to have stayed in Florence, but this has no reflection on the Hotel, purely a personal choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over looking the courtyard

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Santa Croce last October for 1 night while visiting Pisa. I was intrigued by the thought of staying in an old monastery so we gave it a shot. The hotel is away from the train station and quite far from the tourist areas. It was walkable but it was a hike. We managed the walk with our luggage and a 1 year old from the train station, but it would also have been an easy cab ride. Getting from the hotel to the tower was an interesting walk. You pass through residential areas and can walk along the river. If you give yourself plenty of time it can be enjoyable and you pass by some other small museums and churches that you might not see otherwise.

The hotel itself was austere but incredibly peaceful. It is, as advertised, a former monastery. The rooms are small and simple but clean and comfortable. There is wifi in the lobby and a bag check service. We ate at the hotel's restaurant and the food was pretty good. It seemed that it was a mother daughter team running the show and they bring the food to you at tables out in the central courtyard. It was nice eating out in the open air with the only sound being the bells.

There is still some old artwork around so be sure to wander the halls. There is also an operational church attached to one side of the hotel.

All in all if you are looking for a peaceful break in the middle of an Italian vacation (as we were) this is a great place to spend a night or two.

Room Tip: The rooms are all similar but be sure to walk around to see some of the artwork.

We stayed in this beautifully restored building for a short break.
We found it to be an ideal location a pleasurable walk from the centre and very restful.
They have kept the monastic feel and we liked that, it felt like a retreat but perhaps some find it austere.
Breakfast on the terrace was a delight.
The church next door is well worth a visit.
Staff were very helpful.

THE GOOD:
Hotel seemed promising, and I had hoped for a nice relaxing, peaceful stay.
It is a fantastic building and the staff were fine.
Was nice to sit outside on the patio area on an evening. It is possible to buy snacks and wine and beer - though expensive - better off going to a minimarket.
Breakfast was good enough - pastries, cereal, yogurt, fruit, continental meat and cheeses etc.
I was prepared for the basic facilities, so that suited me fine.
Bus stops just round the corner, taking you to the station, where you can get to the airport easily by train or bus.
Taxi to airport was just under 12 euros.
THE BAD:
Bed was cold and felt almost damp - though it wasn't.
Shower was all limescaled up - had to scrape off the limescale to get a decent shower.
Noisy bathroom extractor fan from next door - very noisy and disturbing in fact.
Noisy doors. I had a shared entrance.
Noisy breakfast room directly below - they were preparing it on the evening and then in the morning.
Last day there was no new soap / shower cap / plastic water cup.
There is no safe in the room.
The wifi was poor - even in the lounge area.
TV reception was bad.
Fine for a cheap stay - but I wouldn't stay longer than my 4 nights. It didn't feel restful and I missed home comforts.
OVERALL:
I enjoyed it overall - but wouldn't stay again - though maybe in the newer rooms in the annex.
If it wasn't for the style and original feel of the hotel - it would be less than average.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the newer annex. Hope for nice weather too - as you won't want to be stuck in...
