“An Breathtaking, One-of-a-Kind Find - Plus Excellent Free Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2011

You know when you pass a Lotus in the parking that your stay is going to be above-average! My husband and I ran into train strikes on our honeymoon and unexpectedly needed to stay the night in Pisa on our way to Assisi. His father found us this ex-monastery Hotel Santa Croce in Fossabanda online and reserved our rooms a matter of hours before we arrived.

If you have ever dreamed of visting a picture-perfect monastery with beautiful courtyard cloisters and frescos, this is it! You are literally staying in the midst of this.

The complimentary breakfast was the best I have EVER had in Italy, spanning all of my trips over the years. Usually Italian breakfasts are disappointing, but this was perfect: attendants making sure food was hot/cold and plentiful, lots of choices for juice, fruit, cereal, pastries, yogurt, etc. The ambiance of breakfast was my favorite part of our whole trip in Pisa. I could have sat looking out at the cloister courtyard for the rest of my life. If you want an old, historic Italy sensory experience, choose this hotel!

The rooms were adequate. It seemed no matter how hard we tried in Italy we just could not get one large bed....we always had two single beds. The rooms were very clean with an adorable view.

To put a cherry on top, there is an active church still on the grounds of the hotel! Right next door to the entrance, you'll find a beautiful, elaborate church with statues and the Blessed Sacrament reserved. If you are a religious person, this would make the hotel the "complete package" - you can get up in the morning and pray or go to Mass in the beautiful, peaceful church!

I would LOVE to stay again!!

The hotel is a 10 euro fare from the Airport. The room we had was basic, but clean and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfasts at the hotel are buffet based; Rolls, ham, Cheese, cereal, yogurt, fruit etc., but good. A good start to the day that can keep you going till the afternoon. For the evening there are a handful of restaurants around the corner and an excellent pizza place where Calzone and a grande beer will leave you with change from 10 euros! The nearer you go to the Field of miracles, the more expensive everything becomes; buy your own refreshments with you to avoid being charged 21.85 euros for 2 beers!

The hotel is under the airport flightpath and this starts in earnest perhaps at 8 am. But don't worry the hotel rings the bells at 7am and 7.30 to start the day and to say the breakfast bar is open! The flights stop in the evening, so you can still get a good nights sleep.

The hotel is 1/2 mile from the local supermarket, coop, which shuts at 9pm. The hotel is 5 minutes from the river Arne and perhaps a 20 minute walk to the field of miracles or the railway station. A return trip to Florence on the train is about 12 euros and is well worth it.

There are no Tea/Coffee making facilities in the rooms, but a filter coffee can be had from reception for a euro. Only had one and was OK, but we were out most of the time. Overall a pleasant hotel which is a good base for exploring the area.

Room Tip: 24 hour English speaking helpful receptionists.

Hotel was easy to find from the airport and central enough to be able to get around. Welcome and Clean Hotel....some might find the rooms smaller than they would like but they are ample. No alarm clock needed, automatic early morning call makes sure everyone does not miss breakfast :-)

I went to this hotel for a one day workshop, but actually me and my colleagues stayed for 2-3 nights in there.
The rooms are clean, but don't expect any fanciness, it is really ascetic. The only good surprise in the room was the fact that it had 5 plug-ins - for an Italian room it is quite a lot!

As to the most inconvenient things about the hotel, these are the following:
there is a bell tower for the church and it is not only for decoration. The bell is ringing few times in the morning (around 7 o'clock) and few times in the evening as well (around 7 as well). I am not very familiar with catholic rituals, so can talk only about Friday-Sunday period (maybe during the week the bell doesn't ring or ring less, don't know). but when it rings you hear it everywhere - in the rooms, in the meeting room, so it might be really disturbing because of the loudness.

The second disappointment was the internet connection. I know that Italy isn't that much equipped with Internet facilities, but this was beyond what you expect from the hotel with facilities for meetings. You can pay for the connection - 5 euros for 24 hours access, but the wifi is not accessible in the rooms, only in the yard or the lobby and it is not always stable, sometimes you have to walk around to be able to send an email!

As to the good points:
- the breakfast is ok - not that much choice, but the amount and quality of food are totally worth the price.
- the location is in a quiet district, only 20 minutes walking to the city center, you can even walk from the train station to the hotel (but it might take you like half an hour)
- they gave the discount for the exhibition in one of the cities' museums, but I think the other hotel might be doing it as well.

In the end I would not unrecommend the hotel at all, but I would suggest you look for other options if you can. This one is ok, but might be better (stayed one week later in the other hotel in Pisa for the same price and no bell and totally reliable free internet connection, with meeting facilities).

Loved our 2 nights at this hotel. Not the easiest to get to from the train and bus stations, but we had a car. Pretty decent 30+min walk to Leaning Tower area, but nice along the river with good city views. Also about a good 20-30 minute walk to train/bus stations.

We MUCH prefer unique properties - dislike cookie cutter hotels/motels and this fit the bill. Be ready for your 0700 wake up call by the church bell :^)

A unique hotel in a former monastery which makes an interesting change from all the run-of-the-mill places, we spent one night here after arriving on a late flight into Pisa airport and were very happy with the choice.

We had to take a taxi as there was a huge thunderstorm and downpour when we arrived in Pisa, however we walked into town the following day and it took roughly 10 minutes to reach the station, and then a further 10 minute walk up to the Field of Miracles (Leaning Tower et al). Reception staff were very friendly and spoke English with no issues.

The room was quite spartan but to be expected as they were formerly sleeping quarters for monks, though the bathroom was a modern en suite and quite spacious. Our room was on the first floor with the walkway outside the door overlooking the central courtyard, and though I was initially concerned it could have been quite noisy with people walking along the stone floor outside I didn't hear a thing overnight.

We didn't book breakfast so can't comment on the quality of that other than to say the eating area was on the corner of the courtyard and looked like a fantastic place to start your day.

All in all an enjoyable stay and I would recommend the place as something different.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in October 2010. We had no idea that it was a former monastry so when we arrived we were impressed with the whole look. A massive, well cared for courtyard with the rooms (which were the former monks cells) surrounding it. We arrived too early to check in so the receptionist suggested we leave our bags and check out the area. She was very polite about the wait.
When we got to our room, it was very basic but we werent expecting much more with the price we paid. It was very clean and the bathroom was almost as big as the room itself with all modern and spotlessly clean amenities - Fantastic.
The area is a little out of the way and there doesnt seem to be much around, although the leaning tower and train stationn are well within walking distance and we caught the train to Florence one day.
We never made it to breakfast, but people we spoke to said it was great. The evening meal was fine, but not fantastic. i order ham pizza, I got a magherita with 3 slices of ham just laid on top and it lacked taste, not what youd expect from the home of the pizza. Also, we order some chips to share and these never arrived and we were still charged for them.
Only 2 things negative to say, one is the daily 'wake up call' at 7am of the church bells.. We were opposite them and they still woke me up so I dread to think about the volume of them for the people staying underneath, although I was able to go back to sleep straight away, so not really complaining, just a point to make.
The second is mosquitos. I didnt actually see any but came away with several painful bites. Obviously this is not the hotels fault and they have got nets over the windows in an attempt to prevent this, but Im at home now covered in calomine lotion, LOL.

Overall, if you want a change from the 'cookie cutter mould' hotels that are all about these days, then I couldnt recommend this highly enough.
