Perhaps unfit for a queen, but it has a certain serenity and faded grandeur that is hard to compare. Room was very large if a touch Spartan, with 50’s furniture. Great view over the river from the window (which does open – when you know the knack). Bed large and very comfortable. I couldn’t quite make out whether the bathroom tilling was modern retro, or original – quite possibly the latter. The sort of thing that is all the rage in bathroom showrooms these days.
Reception staff all hugely helpful (printing boarding passes etc), didn’t sample breakfast as we checked-out before it was served but they did leave out a tray of juice and pastries in the lobby.
Only minor gripe was that the street noise was quite loud (3rd floor – with windows and shutters closed), but it was a Sat night in summer, and it wasn’t deafening by any stretch of the imagination.

Room Tip: river view rooms at front have trade off with street noise. Your call.

Both Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor suggested this would be a good place to stay and how right they were. Beautiful building with genuinely helpful and friendly staff and a great base for Pisa and the surrounds. We had a lovely room which like the whole hotel had a slightly 'well worn' air but this just made it feel warm not tired. We arrived quite late after our flight and the central light was not working, but wall and side lights were. We completely forgot to mention it next morning but it was fully working on our return from our day out. The breakfasts were excellent, and its central position meant it was an easy walk to the train station which we used to access the fabulous Lucca and the overwhelming Florence. We deliberately stayed in Pisa because it was half the price of Florence and the 45 minute train journey to Florence just added to the trip. We would highly recommend the Royal Victoria. When we returned to Pisa for our final night before the flight home we could not stay at the hotel again and deeply regretted it, the alternative had none of the delightful character that sets the Royal Victoria apart from the crowd.

I was staying Pisa to be close to LAJORTICA where Andrea Bocelli concert was to be. I needed help getting to and from the hotel to the concert and the staff spent time researching buses online and shuttle options. They also got taxis for pick-up in minutes, presented maps for clarification, knew the closest banks, etc. and did it all with sincere enthusiasm and caring. This is important to someone who travels alone and does not know the Language. It was very impressive!!

Room Tip: I loved being on the river. Higher floors would have less street noise.

Well worth a visit for the characterful interior, and the location on the Arno river front. It is a very old hotel full of antique furniture (in the rooms as well as public areas). The roof terrace is lovely, with lots of plants, sofas, and tables and chairs, (although the only views are of nearby rooftops) and the staff will happily bring you drinks for a very reasonable price (order at reception on the ground floor, then climb, or take the tiny antique lift to the 4th floor, and they will serve you on the roof terrace!).
The breakfast was very good. No hot food (but this is Italy) but very good bread, ham, cheese, coffee, lovely cakes, fruit, juice and chilled water.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
On the downside, it does look run down. Some of the fittings were damaged, or patched up (surface plumbing and mismatched tiles in the bathroom, for example). The bed did seem to be rather old. Contrary to what some bad reviews state, though, it was very clean, and I'm really fussy! (All the old furniture, battered fittings, etc. give the impression of being dirty, but it wasn't).
They offer a lot of different grades of room, only some of which have air-con, and apparently some of the cheaper ones have shared bathrooms, so choose carefully, book directly for best service, and ask for what you want. The cheap rooms are really cheap, though. We had a standard twin room (which had good air-con and a small private shower room) and a classic river view room, which had a big bathroom, and air-con (which worked, but kept cutting out!). The view of the river is lovely, but there will be some noise from the street.
A great location, it is a lovely walk (900m) through the historic centre to the tower and the duomo. A similar distance the other way to the railway station - there is frequent bus (LAM Rossa) that stops about 70m away on the riverfront during the day, if you're not energetic enough to walk! The best area to look for somewhere to eat is near the hotel (avoid the tourist traps near the leaning tower!). Taxi from the airport cost us only 14 Euros (including extra charges for 4 people, luggage, and at 9.30pm).
Give it a try!

Room Tip: Lots of grades, choose carefully, and check directly what facilities you are getting.

We have visited short stays twice in this lovely and cozy hotel. Each time the visit has been very nice. The small roof terrace is wonderful, especially in the early spring, when arriving from the still so cold Finland to welcome the sun and warmth and scents of spring. On my birthday we got a very nice room as a surprise. One can choose a basic room for a reasonable price, or a room with better amenities. Situated centrally in Pisa, by the River Arno, easy walking distance to the many attractions of Pisa. Easy to visit also Lucca by train or bus. Very good memories from here. Last visited in February 2014 (here I had to choose a date, so the year is here 2015). We'll be back, hopefully very soon. Thank you!

We visited this hotel in July when even the Italians were complaining about the heat. Pisa was really hot but our room had glorious air conditioning - most welcome! We arrived in our hire Fiat 500 from the airport and drove through tiny backstreets to a car park. On our first morning, breakfast in the dining room was a lovely continental breakfast with lots of fresh fruit and ice cold water!

The hotel is a glorious example of Art Deco splendour with a superb roof terrace where my husband and I had a very welcome glass of chilled white wine. On our 2nd night the hotel owners recommended a local fish restaurant on a boat. Great food and a bonus when a chap next to us leaned over to ask if we liked the wine as it was from his vineyard!

Having read some of the reviews on this site I would agree that this is not the most modern of hotels. But if you want a capsule hotel such as a Holiday Inn, you will not enjoy the romance of an independent family run hotel with all the quirks of an old Italian palazzo right on the river. Yes, the room at the front of the hotel was a bit noisy - but only because there were so many people sitting on the wall having a nice time in the heat of summer! This place has romance and glamour in spades. Easy access to Lucca, Siena and Florence make this a perfect Tuscan base. I would not hesitate to recommend the Hotel Royal Victoria to anyone looking for something a little out of the ordinary.

Stayed for one night in August 2015.

Great location, no more than a 5/10 minute walk to major tourist sites (leaning tower etc) and restaurants and bars.

It's good value, but don't expect too much. It's extremely dated in decor, and surprised us a little when we arrived. No air conditioning could be a problem, but our room had a manual fan (that didn't really work correctly).

Breakfast was okay.
