“Great location, old charm”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

We stayed here for one evening on the start of our travels through Italy. This is hotel is in a lovely old building right in the heart of Pisa. We where able to walk from the airport to the hotel which took approximately 40 minutes. The rooms where adequate with comfy beds but the bathrooms where not the cleanest and although there is a toilet on each floor the shower was a few floors up. Reasonable for a one night stay.

The hotel is a wonderful old building in the heart of Pisa and has been a hotel for centuries. In the past this was a grand hotel which would have been lavishly furnished. Previous guest include the likes of Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and various royalty.
The hotel has fallen on difficult times and the décor is not what it once was. The furnishings are, unfortunately, more Argos than baroque. Nonetheless, this is a wonderful opportunity to stay in this old hotel for very reasonable rates.
The room was large and the bed comfortable and everything was clean.
Breakfast was an extensive continental affair with lots of choice.
All the sights of Pisa and the rail station are within ten minutes walk.
I would recommend the hotel.

A couple of doors down from the hotel there is a very nice little pizza/pasta restaurant and a gelateria, used almost entirely by locals. Very nice, cheap food and wine.

Room Tip: Rooms at the top rear are quietest

We have now stayed here together three times; my husband for a total of five times. He loves it! It is in a wonderful location; right on the River Arno, directly across the river from the post poffice and within very close proximity to the central shopping areas, the Tower, Cathedral and Baptistry.
The hotel does have self-serve "breakfast"; the usual European meats, cheeses, yogurts & other items which I could not make out. And, of course, the bread.
Upon our arrival, the bathroom light was not working, but by mid-afternoon & a second request to the front desk, the light bulb was replaced. The staff are extremely courteous and friendly. But, the hotel is dated and is badly in need of updates. Do not get me wrong, the place is very clean but very old looking.

Room Tip: Rooms on the river side tend to be a bit noisier than those in the back of the hotel.

We stayed here only one night before flying out of the Pisa airport the next morning. This is a very old hotel. The room was large. The bed was comfortable. Getting on Internet service was somewhat difficult and there was a charge - the first time I have had this in a month of travels through Italy. Some of the tiles were loose in the floor. But the window opened with a great view of the Arno River. Breakfast was ok - not anything really good, some bread and cereal, fruit - and the breakfast room was cold - not temperature wise, but the atmosphere. The reception staff was friendly and helpful

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the river.

The staff in this hotel are an asset - helpful and charming. The hotel itself is very pleasant witha lovely roof terrace. Our room was basic, my matrice had seen better days. But the room was clean. I would return to this hotel, but probably would ask for a better room. But to be honest for what we paid it was very good indeed.

Excellent location, easy to find as long as you head straight ahead out of the train station and head towards the river.
The rooms are huge, to match the beautiful old Italian furniture.
The desk staff were very helpful, and the breakfasts were plentiful. The roof top terrace is a beautiful place to top up your fluid levels in the heat.
The only downside is the noise at night. I requested a room over the courtyard, but was allocated a room with a view over the river as I asked for a room with a bath (302). Although this was lovely to look out over, it's really too noisy to hope to get any sleep. If you are happy to just have as shower, you can have a quoted room. The desk staff did offer to change our room, and much to my husband's dismay, I decided to sit it out due to it being the weekend of the regatta.
I would definitely stay here again, without doubt, but would request a courtyard room.

Top reviews in both Lonely Planet and Time Out guidebooks for Tuscany made booking a junior suite at the expected traditional glory of the Royal Victoria Hotel by the river Arno in Pisa. The low price was a warning unfortunately ignored. In Italy there is no such thing as a bargain except for the well brewed espressos available everywhere for 1€. You get what you pay for.

The location is superb, in the centre of the lovely, underrated university city of Pisa.

This suite/family room, booked for two adults and three children for a few hours sleep before early flight, was extremely worn down. Classy old furniture was ok, charming bathroom with a few facilities, and objects from the not-so-faraway-past such as a pack of q-tips under the cupboard gave me a hunch of not too thorough cleaning. A TV and a fan; no bin, no A/C, a nice balcony with a facade screaming for paint was some of the interior details on site. The whole experience was dark wood and dusty textiles, complete with a scary phone booth in the reception with a device from Mussolini´s days. Pittoresque to some, a tad on the ramshackle side for others.
On the positive side is the friendly and professional staff, mastering the English language in full. Service minded and polite, doing their best to make up for the impressive lack of refurbishing. The roof terrace is also a nice spot for a nightcap, and at night the empty dining rooms and gloomy hallways seem perfect for a horror movie.

However, we will probably try the Bologna Hotel the next time. The four star Royal Victoria does not deserve more than two.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with A/C.
