“Bliss”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013 for a stay in June 2013

We were looking for a quiet relaxing holiday with easy access to local sights and this property fitted the bill. Having stayed a couple of days in Pisa, La Lucertola was a restful retreat with beautiful views, lovely weather and comfortable accommodation.
The access road is a bit daunting first time but easier with practice and worth it .
Visited Lucca twice, only about twenty min driving, and no problems parking lots to see and plenty of eateries for all budgets
Owners, Colin and Louisa very helpful and on hand for any problems, house well equipped, beds comfortable and for me the garden produce and abundance of fresh herbs made cooking fun.. Didn't try the pizza oven as was 35+ degrees all week and couldn't bear to light it but olive wood BBQ very good.
We all enjoyed our holiday and would go back

“Great owners, great place, great views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013 for a stay in April 2013

I booked this trip at very late notice and was really happy with professionalism of the owners. The place has two cosy farm houses next to one another and the views are amazing. The weather in April was pleasant and although it rained on one day, fear not, the rising mist in the morning is incredible to watch when the sun comes up...

Nearby Pisa, Florernce and Lucca are great to drive to. The local supermarkets offer really fresh produce - we took advantage of that cooked some great food indoors.

Highly recommended and we'd love to go back in the summer time

“Fantastic views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

A rustic farmhouse with fabulous views of the plain of Pisa. We could see the leaning tower from the terrace! Convenient situation for visiting Lucca and Pisa and also an attractive part of the coastline which is a protected natural park, all of these are worth a visit. There are other seaside towns in easy reach too. Florence is also an easy drive away as are other well known Tuscan places. You can also use the local rail service to explore.

It is quite an adventure getting to La Lucertola; up a very steep gravel track through the olive groves with five hairpin bends. Two of these bends require two manoeuvres to get around! It certainly made me hold my breath on several occasions.

Colin and Luisa are able to provide you with useful local knowledge to plan your trips. We enjoyed the company of the all seeing and all knowing Reg, the large friendly ginger cat. The pool was very cooling in the heat and the views from the pool area lovely, although the pool was smaller than the photos would suggest.

“Fabulous, just fabulous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

The downside first: the road up to La Lucertola requires good tyres and some nerve. It's a bit hairy, with sharply angled bends all the way up and the road is a tad bumpy here and there. But it is doable and we did do it, daily, even though some us often elected to walk some or part of the way up.

However, this is a minor caveat, since once you're up there, La Lucertola s pretty well perfect. Comfortable, well-equipped house, with a terrace offering a fantastic view of Pisa (yes, you can see That Tower) and beyond to the sea and the scent of wild herbs in the air. The pool is a welcome respite from the heat and essentiak after a day spent visiting some of Italy's loveliest cities. Florence is an hour by train and Lucca is just twenty minutes drive.

Colin, Luisa and Max are excellent hosts and offer the added advantage not only of their delightful cats but also a recording studio (teenage boy heaven).

So, a blissful fortnight and one we'd very much like to repeat.

“Outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

What a lovely place to stay in, peaceful, relaxing, with fantastic views. You can see as far as Corsica (on a clear day). You can even see the Tower of Pisa from the bedroom windows. The farm house was charming and offered all the amenities one would expect. Loungers were provided for parents to curl up on and watch the stars with a glass or two. For the kids, 8 and 5, there was a plunge pool. This was great as it wasn't too deep for the youngest and provided a welcome release from the hottest of Tuscan suns. You can walk in the woods behind the farmhouse, pick your own fruit and veg, BBQ and even try out the pizza oven. There are so many things to do and see, from medieval towns and bike rides along the walls, wine tasting in the nearby vineyard, markets, churches, the beaches, rafting in the river. The food and local restaurants were outstanding as were all the Italians we met. The owners Colin and Luisa and their son Max were excellent hosts and were on hand to answer any questions. Luisa was also able to do a bit of shopping for us before we arrived and was also able to provide a reputable garage for some repairs. These are the little touches that make you feel at home and truly looked after.

“A rustic cottage with stunning views and all the basics.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

Observations include:

1) Views are spectacular
2) Location to Pisa, Lucca and beaches was excellent..
3) Very friendly and helpful hosts with good tips of what to visit and where to eat.
4) Whilst the kitchen and lounge area were functional they could not be described as luxurious
5) Disappointed that we could not 'order in' local Italian cuisine as advertised on the website - we'd hoped to do that lots!
6) In August take lots of mosquito spray or you will be eaten alive!
7) Pool and pool area was adequate - But having just spent the previous week in Volterra and paid far less (- £300) for a superior property/pool area this was disappointing, particuarly with young children .
8) Air conditioning would vastly improve the experience in the 40 degree heat of August - fans provided were noisy and just moved the warm air around!
9) Be prepared for the 'exciting' drive up to the property via gravel track and hair-pin bends!
