“GREAT B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

My Wife, Daughter and I were fortunate enough to spend 4 nights in Il Matino during mid June. As others have already stated, the establishment is nicely decorated, rooms are of a decent size and everything is spotlessly clean. The self-service breakfast was a delight, with plenty of choice such as cold meats, cheese's, bread and fantastic homemade cakes. However, what makes this B&B stand-out from others is Monica; not only is she the owner, she's also the concierge, cook and travel advisor...................her work ethnic truly put us shame!!!!

Going at a gentle walking pace, Il Matino is located approx 20 mins from the city centre.

Pisa itself is a lovely city and for us, provided a real insight into Italian food and culture. For those that can stomach heights, I'd strongly recommend climbing the tower - we purchased tickets online in advance, however, people also seemed to have no trouble purchasing tickets on the day from the nearby ticket office.

During our daily walks into the city, we stumbled across a lovely bakery (Panificio) where 5 Euros got us a bag full of breads and pastries, ideal for snacking-on during the day. On the subject of eating, other notable establishments worth a visit are the baguette cafe (next to 'Spaghetteria It Tegame') located alongside the Arno river, where a huge baguette filled with fantastic ingredients of your choice and a large bottle of the local beer will set you back approx 7 Euros. Also 'La Bottega Del Gelato' (located alongside the main bridge in the city centre) sold the most delicious ice cream at reasonable prices, especially considering it's prime location.

Pisa Centrale Train Station is a 10-15 min walk from the city centre. We used the trains twice during our trip, once to Florence (55 mins each-way) and once to Lucca (30 mins each way). Despite our initial trepidation, we found the train system both easy to use and reliable - just remember to punch your tickets in the ticket punching machine, prior to boarding!!

Needless to say, Florence was extremely busy, so our fleeting 5hr visit only provided us with a brief taster of the city..............I'm sure we will return at some point in the future and give ourselves a little more time to take in the sights. Lucca on the other hand was far more "doable" in a day and highly recommended - the view from the 'Guinigi Tower' is to die for.............if your camera has a panorama function, then this is the place to use it........360 degrees of stunning scenery.

In summary, if you are thinking of staying in Pisa, please consider Il Mattino, we wouldn't hesitate in returning.

If/When I return to Italy, I would visit Pisa JUST so I could stay at Il Mattino ha l'oro in bocca. The staff was incredible and so helpful. The owner was so knowledgeable of the area and what to see and do. The breakfast was an amazing assortment of homemade italian specialties. The rooms were so clean, not a spec of dirt anywhere! Wifi worked perfectly (and trust me this was a problem in other hotel I stayed in during my visit). Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay and will 110% be coming back.

This is a wonderful place to stay. Tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and breakfasts are delicious with a different quiche and cakes every morning.
Monica is so helpful! We said we were going to Lucca and Florence and she printed off train timetables for us and also gave us a map of Pisa with lots of helpful information.
We got a taxi from the airport to il Mattino and this cost 7 euro. The transfer was only about 10-15 minutes.
Pisa is very well connected with regular trains to Florence and Lucca. Public transport was cheap and it was just over 7euro each way to Florence by train.
I would highly recommend il Mattino and cannot find any fault with it.

Room Tip: Clicked on swimming pool by mistake and cannot remove it. Il Mattino does not have a pool.

We had only one day to see around Pisa but on arrival the owner provided such a wealth of information - where to visit, eat, fill up before returning the hire car; how to get back to the airport easily - that we were able to get the most from our time in Pisa. The bedrooms were interesting, spotless and very comfortable. We had an early morning flight so the owner kindly prepared an early breakfast for us. All in all a very pleasant place to stay.

IL Mattino is a lovely B&B immaculately clean and Monica the owner is so helpful with good advice about where to eat and what to see, I would definitely stay there again .Pisa was much lovelier than I had expected it was at the end of our trip so we didn't have long, thanks to Monica we managed to see all the best bits and the food was some of the best of the trip

We stayed at Il Mattino for two nights early June 2013. It is a lovely B&B that has a lot of charm and is spotlessly clean. The rooms were spacious and well laid out with good facilities including tea making equipment and a fridge. The owner was very helpful, she went out of her way to provide recommendations for restaurants and things to do even providing maps marked with key items of interest. The city Center was about 15 mins walk away which was fine as it meant the area was not at all noisy, I would definitely stay there again.

This has been my second and my family's first stay in IL MATTINO...hal'oro in bocca. This house is marvelously renovated with an emphasis on beautiful details. Tastefully furnished rooms (with adjustable A/C) and bathrooms are wonderful, very clean and comfortable. While situated in a residential area, the Arno and the city center are reachable after a walk of 15 minutes or faster by bus. The breakfast is exceptional, with varying home-baked cakes! Signora Monica cares about every guest, e.g. giving great sightseeing tips, providing detailed information about public transportation, rental cars, restaurants, etc.
The service is in my opinion perfect!
