“Lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

Don't be disheartened when you arrive to a dark locked metal gate leading up a dark stairwell because at the top is a nice little guest house worth staying at! Our room and bathroom were lovely, the breakfast area was decorated so charming, breakfast was also nice. The location was great and the staff were very nice. Would reccommend it for sure!

We recently stayed in this lovely B & B in Lucca and we were sorry we only had one night. We were a bit early checking in but were able to wait in the lovely breakfast room until out room was ready 30 minutes later. Staff including Daniela were so helpful and friendly, and our room so nice with a frecso ceiling and cold bottled water, beer and soft drink free in the little fridge. It was very hot outside, so this was very welcome. Breakfast was above average with a big range of lovely things to eat. Great place right in the central part of Lucca. Would love to come back again soon.

I have to admit that upon arrival I thought "what have I done". We arrived to find a locked gate with a dark staircase that looked quite spooky. Once you get up a couple of flights of stairs you are greeted with a lovely, quaint B&B. Our room was lovely. It is very very clean and the staff are all lovely. Our breakfast was quite nice, eggs cooked as per your request and a coffee of choice. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

It is very difficult to say enough superlatives about this gorgeous B&B and the lovely lady that runs it, Daniella. It is fantastic! My husband and I were treated to what I can only imagine was the best room and on the bed were long stemmed, red roses for me as it was our 30th wedding anniversary. How thoughtful was that?! Once inside the B&B you cannot help but be impressed by the very classy furnishings both in the rooms and the dining/living room open to the guests. The rooms are very large, beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. There are five rooms in this B&B and right in the heart of Lucca. It is above the museum and can be a little hard to find but once you have, you will be rewarded hand over fist. Do not be put off by the entrance downstairs. I got the feeling that Daniella had no control over that but she certainly has put her stamp on the B&B upstairs. There are steps to climb to arrive at the B&B but Daniella had an assistant on hand to assist with our luggage. If you have difficulty carrying luggage upstairs I would suggest you check with Daniella when booking to make sure the same service we received will be available for you on check in. We had managed (stupidly) to get a ZTL fine at Cinque Terre and Daniella went to the post office for us and paid the fine so that we could get the discount. She has sent me the receipt for it and I really believe this goes beyond the call of duty. The breakfast was plentiful and consisted of juice, coffee, pastries of every kind, eggs how you like them cooked, yoghurt and so on – one word "fabulous". It has a private car park and is in a ZTL zone but be rest assured Daniella will take care of that. This was one of the highlights of our places to stay and would not hesitate in recommending the gorgeous Relais San Lorenzo to anyone looking for a tremendous place to stay in the heart of Lucca. Daniella's attention to detail is second to none. You will absolutely love it. Bellissimo!

Room Tip: Any room, I feel sure, will please even the fussiest traveller.

The only negative of this review is that we were not able to stay longer. All of the previous reviews are spot on and I would stay here again in a heart beat. The room and bathroom were amazing, ours came with a stocked mini fridge and a lovely balcony. The location couldn't be any better and the parking situation was ideal. We parked for an hour in a paid lot just inside the city wall closest to the hotel and walked to find it. Once we located it and were checked in it was easy to bring the car up to the hotel and around to the parking area. We had to catch a plane so we weren't able to stay long enough for breakfast, unfortunately, but Daniela made sure to give us a few fresh cookies on our way out so we didn't leave too hungry. Lucca is a beautiful town and I plan to go back for a longer visit and will stay here again without a doubt.

Room Tip: Our room had a mini fridge and a great little balcony.

We stayed for one night in the room downstairs with its own entrance. It took us ages to find the place but the staff (mother & son) were great at talking us in on the phone and getting us parked in the courtyard. they were lovely, warm, welcoming and attentive. The room was lovely and full of character, bathroom nice & clean. The two things that could have been improved, there was no option for us to turn on the heating although we were cold and the installation of a secondary door at the end of the entrance corridor from the main stairwell and at the bottom of the internal stairs in the room to the sitting\dining room would block out some intrusive noise. The breakfast was good with lots of pastries and there was complimentary fruit\nuts\water & brandy in the evening.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Stayed only one night but fell in love with the hotel and Lucca. Danielle is very helpful and welcoming - she provided us with guide books, maps, and recommendations around the area (including info on a local tribute to Puccini concert). Perfect location - short walk to the main shopping street and the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. The hotel is set in a 15th century building and used to be a mansion. High ceilings throughout with beautiful (mostly antique) furnishings. Wonderful main room for relaxing, reading etc and always stocked with fruits and a bottle water. We were in the Puccini room but also got to see the other rooms (we were the only ones as it was still the cold March season) - they are all beautifully decorated with comfort in mind. Our room was very spacious with a comfortable bed. The bathroom was also big. Wifi connection was excellent. Breakfast was a wonderful spread with made to order eggs - despite being the only ones, nothing was spared. Do note that the hotel is above a museum and can be easily missed. Secured Parking is also available for a fee. Relais San Lorenzo is a charming comfortable hotel that we hope to return to one day.
