“Tight room, but a great breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

The rooms are really small. We had two singles pushed together and a roll away bed and we could hardly walk around the room. As we hadn't come to Lucca for the hotel we were happy with the situation. It's a good story to tell how mom had to sleep under the desk area (no, we pulled the bed out at night). The bathroom was very modern and clean. We came to Lucca for a pizza on our way to the Cinque Terre region and decided to stay two nights and day travel over to Cinque Terre.

Room Tip: This hotel is within walking distance to the walled city, but is on a busy street and ambulances go...

We stayed two nights in this small boutique hotel in a great location with easy walking distance to Lucca Old town. Staff were very obliging and diligent in every way. Rooms are small so a longer stay would not be terribly comfortable but the public spaces such as the patio around the pool, and the comfy couches in the reception area, and the table seating for breakfast, add to the space. A very friendly and accomodating staff made our stay pleasant. The bed is a little hard but the room is practical and comfortable. Internet access is good. Definitely recommend the hotel to travellers of all types - families and couples, business or pleasure.

Room Tip: Our room was on the main floor at the end of the hallway, and while very convenient for us with lugg...

We've recently returned from a week in the lovely Lucca. Stayed in the Hotel San Marco and while we found that it had some things that let it down, overall we were very pleased with the hotel.

STAFF
The staff were absolutely exceptional, providing a great level of customer service. They go out of their way to provide as much helpful information as possible, booking taxis, getting information on train/bus times and assisting with places to eat at and things to see. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

LOCATION
Quite a way outside of the walls of Lucca but only a 10 minute walk.

FOOD
Breakfast was ok not a brilliant selection but set us up nicely for the day. A hot selection of scrambled or boiled eggs and bacon, plus plenty of pastries, bread, cheese, meats, yoghurts and cereals.
In the room information pack there was information about the possibility of ordering pizza, etc. On the evening we arrived, we tried to order a pizza and were advised that we would be better off going to the local Pizzeria, which is fine, but why offer the service if it can't be delivered on?

CLEANLINESS
Very clean and tidy overall, however we found that the curtains in our room came down three or four times (just through being opened and closed normally) while we were there.

FACILITIES
Lovely selection of drinks available throughout the day from the bar, which can be enjoyed by the pool (beware of the mosquitos) or in the comfy sofas

Overall very good and enjoyable stay and I would recommend this hotel.

Returned yesterday from beautiful Lucca. My second trip but first stay at The San Marco it certainly won't be the last. I've stayed in some nice hotels in the past but rarely have I received the level of customer service that I had from the wonderful staff here. AND never have I seen people work so hard to keep a place so clean. Nothing was too much trouble. A big thanks to all. The hotel itself is about 10 minutes walk from the city walls or quicker by bike which you can hire at the hotel... Hire is cheaper at the hotel than in the city! The bedrooms are modern as are all the common parts. The swimming pool was pleasant although not heated probably nice in the real heat of the summer. It was nice to relax by the water after a busy day walking around the city anyway. Breakfast was good with a selection of breads, pastries, fruit, meat and cheese etc. always fresh. Make sure you get a Lovely cappuccino to get you kick started! All in all a terrific time had made special by the hard working staff at the San Marco.

We loved this place. It is so easy to walk to the town centre (It takes about 10-15 mins at our speed) or, alternatively, you can lounge by the gorgeous pool all day and have drinks served to you! Reception staff were wonderful - very helpful and went out of their way to find out about train times/ bus times etc. Our room was exceptionally clean and very modern - we felt as though we got a lot for our money. We loved the fact that you could order drinks and they would bring them to the pool for you along with nibbles. However, on the first day that we arrived we felt that the hotel missed a trick and should have had a permanent member of staff out at the pool taking orders - they would have made a packet! Breakfast had an excellent range of hot and cold food and the cappuccinos were delicious. If you don't fancy walking the 10-15 mins into the town centre, we found an excellent pizza restaurant just around the corner - Ristorante Cafe 23. Amazing prices and some of the best pizza and pasta that we ate on our travels.

Hotel San Marco was a very pleasant find but you do need to take a taxi from the station - it was only about 8 Euros so was worth it.

Our only other little niggle was the amount of chemicals in the pool. Our eyes were stinging almost immediately so we recommend checking the levels a little more carefully. Apart from that, this was a great place!

We expected more from this hotel, based on some of the reviews and photos. However, in all fairness, the hotel decor didn't appeal to us and that is purely a question of taste. The breakfast was nice and one could eat on the outside terrace. The hotel is in walking distance to the walls and inside to the main attractions (15 minutes).
Upon arrival, we were taken aback by the stains found on the walls of our room. I asked the front desk to change our room based on this and he mentioned that the stains were just scuff marks. I can't confirm that but they didn't look like scuff marks. Also, the hallways were littered but we did arrive at 5:00 pm, in which case they may have been clean in the morning. The pool is nice although we didn't use it. Overall, this is an nice place to relax, enjoy the pool and the sun. I do think that the rooms should be repainted.
