“A good, safe, clean choice in Lucca”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

I stayed here 2 nights in March 2013 and was very happy with my choice of accomodation. My dorm bed was very comfortable, extra blankets were provided without asking and the place was clean and tidy. Lots of common area space, lockable storage in the rooms and Marco on the front desk was fabulous. Don't hesitate to stay here but please remember that it is a hostel and not a hotel. The shared bathrooms aren't cleaned each and every time someone showers or uses the toilet. But they are cleaned every day and I found them perfectly acceptable (and I like things clean).

The only downside for me was the lack of a kitchen for guest use but they do offer breakfast and dinner for a nominal fee.

Lucca is a wonderful town, full of old buildings, Roman relics, tourists, locals, and lots of surprises. Highly recommended.

I was at the Ostello Frediano in October with a traveling companion for six nights. We had the Puccini suite on the second level, which is two separate bedrooms, a separate bathroom and a large entry hall. Lots of room for the price! One bedroom had a double bed and wardrobe and the other had two twins and wardrobe in the hall. The latter was obviously for kids. The bathroom was adequate, although the temperature of the shower fluctuated from cool to hot in a one minute cycle, and then repeated the cycle. The rooms were cleaned each day and towels renewed.

It's hard to find a bad location in Lucca because the town is so compact. San Frediano is on the northwest side of town adjacent to the Renaissance walls, and about a 20 minute walk from the train station. There's a laundromat about four blocks away. Plenty of restaurants nearby, and there's a dining room in the Ostello. We often stopped by for cappucino and roll with "Sammy," the amiable host. For various reasons we never had dinner there, so no comment is possible. The front desk staff are uniformly helpful and spoke adequate English. The standout was "Marco," a bright kid who was energetic and extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Overall, a wonderful place to stay if you're not too fussy. It's not a hotel, it's a hostel.

For the price, it is not a bad place to stay. It is very basic, which was to be expected, however, the bathrooms were not "sparkling" as many had described. I kept finding traces of previous guests (used dental floss and certain hairs in the bathroom). I gave it an "average" rating, because for what it is (a hostel with some private rooms) and the price, it was what I would have expected.
One note, when checking in, the clerk spoke our room number out loud. For safety reasons, it is better for the room number to be written and pointed at. All those around me knew exactly my room number and how to find it. A little disconcerning for a women traveling alone.

large old building and grounds now serving as a Hostel. I had a private single room with bath. Clean but obviously old and tired, reasonably well maintained.
The location was EXCELLENT. Just inside the walls of Lucca yet provided parking. Two blocks from the main drag. Price was very fair. Bed was sort of thin and hard - but that's my preference so be warned.

I stayed in the Ostello San Frediano in late August. Booked about 1 week before arriving. It was very easy to find and map directions given helped a lot! Staff were very friendly and helpful. No air-con but even though it was hot, this wasn't a problem.Room was fine, had key locker (which was a good size) and a small sink. Bathrooms were fine (though people from other rooms used it even when their one was free!) and clean. Breakfast (for a small fee) wasn't great, so worth just grabbing something in the town. All in all, a lovely place to stay :)

Wonderful historic building to stay in. No air-con. It was high 30's c when we visited so pretty warm. Great location. Close to everything. Staff were exceptional with help and assistance in all matters. 10/10 for that.

Highly recommended as a top place to stay for anyone.
Breakfast room had the X factor due to the owner... a great Italian gentleman with awesome people skills - Fantastic Italian Hospitality!
Thanks.

Room Tip: no aircon so make sure you can access a pool if hot. Bathroom needs a little TLC. Great location a...

Lucca is slightly off the tourist track of Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples. Our decision to visit the medieval walled town was designed to allow us to see a different side of Italy. The Youth Hostel, Ostello San Frediano was a delightful place to stay. It is within the city walls, close to the old town and in walking distance to everything one wants to see... and there's plenty. The hostel is right in the centre of many great restaurants as well.
The hostel was once a convent and then a college and, since 2001, a Youth Hostel that boasts rooms and services that many three star hotels would be proud to provide. Our room was large, with a complete ensuite and amenities. The service from the Hostel staff could not be faulted. It's worth joining the YHA just to enjoy the San Frediano Hostel!!!!
