“Great experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

large old building and grounds now serving as a Hostel. I had a private single room with bath. Clean but obviously old and tired, reasonably well maintained.
The location was EXCELLENT. Just inside the walls of Lucca yet provided parking. Two blocks from the main drag. Price was very fair. Bed was sort of thin and hard - but that's my preference so be warned.

I stayed in the Ostello San Frediano in late August. Booked about 1 week before arriving. It was very easy to find and map directions given helped a lot! Staff were very friendly and helpful. No air-con but even though it was hot, this wasn't a problem.Room was fine, had key locker (which was a good size) and a small sink. Bathrooms were fine (though people from other rooms used it even when their one was free!) and clean. Breakfast (for a small fee) wasn't great, so worth just grabbing something in the town. All in all, a lovely place to stay :)

Wonderful historic building to stay in. No air-con. It was high 30's c when we visited so pretty warm. Great location. Close to everything. Staff were exceptional with help and assistance in all matters. 10/10 for that.

Highly recommended as a top place to stay for anyone.
Breakfast room had the X factor due to the owner... a great Italian gentleman with awesome people skills - Fantastic Italian Hospitality!
Thanks.

Room Tip: no aircon so make sure you can access a pool if hot. Bathroom needs a little TLC. Great location a...

Lucca is slightly off the tourist track of Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples. Our decision to visit the medieval walled town was designed to allow us to see a different side of Italy. The Youth Hostel, Ostello San Frediano was a delightful place to stay. It is within the city walls, close to the old town and in walking distance to everything one wants to see... and there's plenty. The hostel is right in the centre of many great restaurants as well.
The hostel was once a convent and then a college and, since 2001, a Youth Hostel that boasts rooms and services that many three star hotels would be proud to provide. Our room was large, with a complete ensuite and amenities. The service from the Hostel staff could not be faulted. It's worth joining the YHA just to enjoy the San Frediano Hostel!!!!

We stayed here for two nights and thought we had booked a double room - but we got a three-bed one for the same price (with toilet, shower, and a total of three hand basins). We had the only room on the ground floor and were occasionally disturbed by loud groups (hostel guests) of students/kids hanging out outside our window - but of course that's not the hostel's fault and they close the nearby door after midnight. The hostel has very friendly staff, is centrally located and is of good value. We would stay here again, and Lucca is a lovely city!

As a father, wife and daughter we stayed in a 4 bed room that we had to ourselves in this historic ex monastry in LUCCA. We were back in Lucca this time for a night only on our way back to Rome airport.

Although we had to share bathroom and toilet with a number of other rooms, room and linen were very clean and room was large. Room had no airconditioning but probably similar to most backpackers I would guess.

Right on the wall of Lucca this backpacker offered open grassed areas and car parking, people on the desk were exceptionally polite and helpful and restaurants were within a few metres of the door. People staying were mostly young however there were number of older people/couples and even one older gentleman who was biking his way around Eurpope.

We enjoyed our stay as there were also a number of very large areas for you to sit and talk and younger people to mix if they didn't want to stay in their room.

This is a huge hostel in a corner within the walled part of Lucca, very close to the north gate. All parts of the walled city are safe, but it gets very quiet after the day tourists have left.

You can get bus to the train station right next to the Hostel.

The building is old, but tastefully done up. It is very clean. No Wi-Fi in rooms - Wi-fi in the lobby only.

Great Price, highly recommended.
