“Excellent location, slightly tired hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

Eight opera fans booked four rooms at the Universo. Our room had two comfortable single beds, a large bathroom with the highest ceiling I have ever seen. The room had a fridge but no safe although there was a deposit box in reception. Linen was changed every day and was of high quality. We turned off the air conditioning as we had huge windows and a wonderful view of the piazza. All lights worked well and could be switched on and off from the beds. The cleaning staff did a good job.
Breakfast was continental with the usual choice of cold cuts, cheese, cold hard boiled eggs, croissants, warm bread rolls, a variety of cereals, fruit, yoghourts and cakes. It would be improved by a toaster.
Our stay happened to coincide with the annual Lucca summer music festival. We were not aware of this and were rather surprised to find a full pop festival stage venue set up in the piazza next to the hotel and even more surprised when an army of workers erected barriers all around the piazza to prevent those without tickets seeing the gig. Scores of police, fire and ambulance workers arrived and a field hospital put up. All restaurants and bars in the adjacent piazzas closed from 6pm. The band was The Prodigy and was very very loud!!! My glass of wine danced on the table! It was late when they finished and then the workmen arrived to take down the barriers........all in all a very noisy night.
There is a nice restaurant and bar attached to the hotel which gives a 10% discount to hotel guests, unfortunately, because of the stage and tiered seating there was no view of the lovely buildings surrounding the piazza
Hotel Universo is situated in an excellent position for sightseeing within the walls. The wall itself is a five minute walk from the hotel. The staff speak reasonable English and are quite helpful.
The hotel has seen better days, the bar and breakfast room are far too small. There is a lounge/reading room that would make a better breakfast room whilst the breakfast room and bar could be combined to make a pleasant area to relax and enjoy a drink.
I feel we should have been told of the festival when we booked.... Having said that, Stevie Wonder was playing two days after we left..... I'd have been very happy to spend the evening listening to him for free!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a big bathroom a fridge and a balcony

The hotel is very conveniently situated for getting anywhere in Lucca.

I shared a room with a friend. The room had a balcony and a pleasant view. The decor was tired, the bathroom small and overcrowded, with no shower screen or curtain so the water went everywhere. My bedside light didn't work, and the air con dripped. There was no safe in the room but a safe facility at reception. The bed was comfy but the pillow lumpy.

Breakfast was "continental", self-service including drinks from a machine, in a room too small for the purpose. The food was satisfactory, but not a lot of choice, and the croissants lovely.

The staff were helpful, pleasant and the reception staff spoke fairly good English.

The free Wifi worked fine.

The Lucca music festival is held in July and we had not realised that this involves some very, very loud performances from the piazza just outside the hotel. The surrounding roads were cordoned off so returning to the hotel in the evening required map-reading our way around very crowded streets. I do feel that we should have been made aware of these nearby concerts at the time of booking. One lady checked in during the afternoon, heard the band sound-checking, and immediately went off to find another hotel.

All in all, a mixed experience: hotel is satisfactory if you don't set your expectations too high, and you're planning to get out and about.

Room Tip: Rooms 64 and 65 have a balcony over the piazza.

We had a flying visit to Lucca and stayed here for 4 nights, a perfect location situated inside the old city walls so unless you want to visit Pisa or Florence (which are only a short train journey away) there is no need for taxis or car hire.
The hotel is ideal for anyone who likes to walk out in the evening for a drink or to eat as there are a host of bars and good quality restaurants closeby.
The hotel is old but in a good state of repair rooms spacious and many overlook the main piazza. Breakfast was quite good with a fair selection of food, although the dining room was a tad on the small side for the number of residents.Having said that the place was clean and the staff very helpful.
If you visit the hotel take the time to walk around floors 1 & 2 and have a look at the wooden sculptures on the walls one is a hat and scarf the other is a coat and gloves lifelike and truly amazing.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the main piazza

do not pay the high regular price - only if you get a bargain (<< below 60 Euros per night for a single incl breakfast). You pay for the location. Rooms very small, Italian breakfast not more than average

I stayed with a family group aged from 18 to 80. It's right in the centre with a nice piazza to have coffee while you meet with family going in and out. It's handy for everything from the city walls to the sights to the bus station. It has an air of faded elegance which we liked. The rooms varied. Some had baths and some were smaller than others. Some overlooked the piazza which was noisy at night and some faced over the back without a view. It was all well organised and clean. The breakfast is plentiful continental. If you don't like the coffee dispenser, join the locals in the Cafe Sylvia just outside for a great Espresso any time after seven in the morning.

Stayed at this hotel with some friends June 2014. This is a lovely unique hotel and yes the location is excellent but the hotel is a great place to stay. It is steeped in history, clean and the rooms we stayed in were spacious and perfect overlooking the square, fresh towels and linen everyday. To update and spruce up this hotel would take away the charm and character and obviously this would be reflected in the prices. The staff were helpful and friendly and the breakfast was more than adequate. If you are looking for a top class hotel where your shirts get ironed then go elsewhere and pay them prices. But keep the Universo just the way it is, unique and charming and so very Italian.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 65 little balcony with views over square, a little noisy in the morning but if you ar...

As others have said, the only thing going for this place is location--and given how tiny Lucca is, you'd be far better off staying at a nicer, less expensive place and simply walking a few extra steps. Shabby, overpriced, dim rooms; iffy plumbing; no amenities; semi-surly staff. The tiny breakfast room had those awful, stained, back-to-back, no-room-to-wiggle-out chairs. Eating there was a caricature of everyone's worst, cruddiest European breakfast buffet experiences. Over 200 US dollars a night, wasted.

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor (one up from the ground floor) facing the back. No natural light and a view of...
