“Magic don't go any where else but here.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Lucca as a walled city had wealth and power, this hotel is a reflection of that splendor. The decor and building materials are of this era. The hotel was built in 1044 above a Roman tower that you can see in the breakfast room, the hallway floors are marble, the rooms are inlaid timber, the furniture is period. The location is great just inside the gate, the hotel has parking, but you need to pre book this. The hotel is family run and every one takes pride in their service. Look no further this is the place to stay in Lucca.

Our first night in Italy and we could not have been more pleased with our three night stay at this warm and wonderful hotel. Traveling by car we passed the hotel and thought we were lost when a handsome young man (managers son) tapped our window and had us back up a the narrow street just a little and there it was! Before we knew it, he had grabbed our bags and toke them inside and got back in the car with my husband taking him to the secured parking area. While waiting I enjoyed talking to friendly Mario who checked us in. Room was beautiful, breakfast with fresh eggs, meats, cheese, croussants, pastry, juice, many extras and ofcourse coffee (even American coffee if we want) and my favorite cappachino. Perfect location, walking distant to everything and they were very helpful answering any questions we had. LOVED it and hope to go back some day.

Great location. Lovely hotel. Welcoming and friendly staff.

This was a true delight. We arrived outside the walls and were met by the proprietor's son who took our luggage. As we checked in we could tell the pride Mario has for his hotel and his city. He was eager to share stories about the decor and history of his property as he described the room we would be staying in. We had a junior suite which was perfect; a large bathroom elegantly designed with a little window looking out over the tub to the mountains; a large bedroom with sitting room and more than ample storage space; windows on each side giving lovely views. It was accessed by a small elevator and then one flight of stairs continuing up beyond where the elevator ended.

The breakfast room was small but very well done and John, the assistant who had worked the night shift while also preparing the breakfast goodies, served all eagerly and enthusiastically.

After visiting with his guests, Mario was able to determine just what restaurants would be to their liking, and in our case he was right on. He eagerly made reservations for us, gave us suggestions about sites to see, and was up to help us on the day we left at a very early hour.

I want to return!

We stayed 3 nights and wish it could have been longer. This was our first destination after arriving in Florence and it could not have hoped for a better choice .Took a bus from the airport for about 6 Euro each, a lot less expensive than a train and very scenic. Hotel Alexander was no more than 7 minute walk from the bus station inside the walls which is very convenient but located in a charming ,quaint area of Lucca. Mario could not have been more accommodating. We checked in early and he did his best to have our rooms prepared quickly. Our family suite was two spacious connecting rooms with comfortable beds, private baths in each, and a nice view of street activity below. Mario and his son Gabriel made us feel very much at home in every way. They spoke perfect English, however are fluent in several other languages as well. Breakfast variety was great and they went out of their way offering to bring our daughter hot chocolate milk. Can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our experience here and hope to return one day soon. Gratzie Millie Mario!

Room Tip: Connecting family suite on 2nd floor. King bed in one room with large bright bathroom. Separate room...

We booked one night here at the end of our visit to Tuscany. The rest of the time we stayed in an appartment in Florence. The Hotel is very near the bus station - an easy walk even with luggage, and the bus is a great way to travel to and from Lucca.

This is a family run hotel and clearly the passion of the owner. He made an instant connection with us by asking about our travels and sharing his recent problems with transport to and from our local airport (Stansted). He made sure our stay in Lucca was successful.

The room - a triple high up in the buildng - was just beautiful. I would love to stay here longer.

Breakfast was relaxed and enjoyable.

Stayed here for six nights during our trip to Italy. Took a taxi from the train station, just ten minutes journey. Arrived a little early and was welcomed from the minute our taxi arrived, cases taken into the beautiful reception area. Lovely small hotel which we prefer, more personal and the owner Mario obviously knows the business well and is a font of knowledge of the area. The bed was really comfy, the best we had during our tip. Our corner room had two windows but we didn't hear noise from the street. We loved the location - a little bit out of the main centre but means there's a lot less noise. Everything in Lucca is walkable and can quite understand how people get hooked on this lovely small town. The breakfast area is really ornate and one corner of the room has a wall that has been exposed which dates from 200 bc - just amazing!
One slight criticism is that the bathroom is quite dark, difficult for the ladies and their makeup and we did find it a little difficult regulating the temperature of the water. That said we would definately return to Palazzo Alexander if we were ever in Lucca again. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

The staff was wonderful. Every day before breakfast we discussed where we were going - what we planned to see. We always received suggestions and tips which really helped to make our trip memorial. The room was very nice, the breakfast buffet wonderful, I would stay there again in a heartbeat.
