“A nice way to use up time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

The botanical garden is a nice, small attraction. It takes about 30 minutes to get through. The colors and plants are beautiful, however you must be careful in choosing the time of year during which you go. When I went, in September, very few plants were in bloom and a few almost seemed dead. The descriptions are rare, and where they are placed, in italian making it difficult for foreign tourists to get the full experience.
Depending on who you go with, it can be a fun little side-attraction to kill some time, but I wouldn't necessarily plan it as a must-see for most.
The price is affordable, but could be lower considering the short amount of time it can take to get through.

“OK but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

My wife loves gardens so we toured this botanical garden in Lucca. It's fairly small and we didn't find it that interesting. There were one or two interesting varieties of plants but nothing to make us forget Hawaii or the Busch Gardens in Victoria, BC.

“Small, but interesting. A lovely bit of green in a city that is mostly cobblestone and piazzas.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Compact and neatly arranged, the centre pond with the plank boardwalk was very interesting. When you looked to see the small examples of mosses and grasses that grow close to the walk, you could see tiny world of flora that added a depth to the experience. Nice greenhouse, too, and understated statuary in the garden proper.

“Fall may not be the best time...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

Compared to other sites of interest in Lucca, the personnel at the Orto Botanico were indifferent and somewhat begrudging to visitors. Some interesting sections (succulents, arboretum) but might not be a top priority for those who have visited other botanical gardens or arboreta in States or other countries.

“Nice Garden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

This is nice garden though not stunning and quite small though it is within the wall of the old city.

They have a few great old trees and few oddities like a very rare young Wollembi Pine from Australia which is one of the oldest known species on the planet but it is still a baby.
