“Not medieval”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

These are the early 17th century walls, which is why they are so nice to walk or cycle around. Wide enough for a proper road and with the forts and gates supporting gardens they are a fantastic way to spend time understanding the layout and environs of the city, or just to have a picnic or chill out.

“View the old city from above”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

The mura/city wall is a great place to walk or bike around the entire old city center. You can take a ramp down to the center if you see something that appeals and then walk back up to the wall. The views are fantastic and the pace is whatever you want. During our walk there was a Mercedes Classic Car rally with the cars parked in the Amfiteatro.

“Peaceful, romantic, fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

From all the photos, I didn't realise that you can actually walk/cycle/run on the top of the wall. The wall is very wide allowing one to enjoy the city of Lucca from above. My husband and I rented bikes for 2 euro for an hour at the info centre near the Western Gate. The people at the info centre (who were extremely helpful) suggested we avoid cycling through Lucca given the high volume of pedestrian traffic so we stuck to the path on the wall. You can do on lap on the bike in 30 mins (at slow pace). We did two laps. Peaceful, relaxing, romantic, fun...enjoy!

“I love Lucca”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

One of my very favorite places to be. At the moment the walls are in full sun as the leaves are not yet fully out; yet the surrounding mountains are still snow capped.
The town planners from years ago should be congratulated for preserving the walls and the space between the centro storico and the new town outside. The park that now exists is a very special place at all times of day; whether you use it as a gym at 6am, childrens play area or for walking the dog. It is full of locals of all ages who share it with visitors from around the world.
I love to take a bike and make several giros before stopping at a bench with a good book and doing some people watching. It takes 10 minutes to cycle the walls at a decent pace, but it will take longer the first time as you stop to look at the views of the towers, churches and gardens inside the walls.
It gets very busy at the weekend so get out early or go during the week. There are some picnic benches so you can enjoy a focaccia and enjoy lunch up there. I recommend getting an ice cream (nocciolo e pistacchio) from the Gelateria Veneta which is just off the walls down the slope from the Antico Caffe della Mura on Via Vittorio Veneto.
Enjoy your passegiata.
