“Medieval walled city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

Going through the main gates we were intrigued with the large gates and portcullis. Outside the walls the pavements had beautiful pink rose displays. The walls were very wide with trees adorning them, and wide enough to drive around a few cars abreast. People were enjoying the empty areas, lying down reading with their pets. The town had a large piazza, with statues and plenty of pigeons. Nice floral welcome sign on the grass. Shops and restaurants were plentiful and quaint. Worth seeing.

“Interesting place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Visit this town.

Roman based with later additions but basically unspoilt.

Head for the tower with the trees on for inceadable views and take walking shoes to go round the ramparts!

I suggest eating in the old amphithetre piazza...actually more oval rather than square

“Excellent walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

We walked the wall of Lucca. Even though it was raining, the walk was beautiful, not too taxing, and enjoyable. You can see the trees, the city within the walls, and locals walking their dogs. Took us about an hour to walk the entirety of the wall. This includes stopping and taking photos.

“The life of the city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

What attracts me to Lucca over similar sized cities such as, for example, Grosseto, is that Lucca is so lively and the public spaces are full of locals and tourists. During my recent trip to Lucca, I found that most "life" occurred within and on the walls (le mura) of the city. The walls are impressive to see themselves and are extremely well maintained. They form a walking/ cycling path and narrow park that frames the entire center, and offer several benches to sit and watch passersby. I fell in love with Lucca while walking along le mura on a sunny Sunday- and it was the life of the walls that will bring me back to Lucca someday soon!
