“Hotel OK, Horrid Hotel Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Grand Hotel Guinigi with a tour group. After a long day of touring, the Grand Hotel Guinigi was a welcome respite. The hotel is part of the Best Western chain, is located outside of the wall surrounding the main part of Lucca, is not new, but it was well-appointed. Our room was large and its furnishings were comfortable.

We had planned on going to a restaurant in Lucca, but decided at the last minute to have dinner with our tour group in the hotel. Our dinner menu was pre-selected, so we did not even see the regular menu. The only good part of the dinner was the farro soup; it was pretty good. We wish we had been able to have only farro soup. We normally like chicken cacciatore; it is a dish that we may have chosen for ourselves; we have nothing against chicken cacciatore. But EVERYBODY disliked the chicken cacciatore we were served– undercooked and yucky; very, very yucky. Some people refused to eat it, and it made some people sick. We were unable to finish dinner and left early.

As we were at the Grand Hotel Guinigi with a tour group, we have no idea what the hotel cost, what else may have been on the hotel’s dinner menu, or what the dinner cost.

Stayed in the hotel a couple of nights. The hotel is located a few kilometers outside the city walls, but with a number of bus stops close by (17 bus from station to within 5min of hotel, bus 18 stops in front of hotel). There are cheaper hotels inside the walls, but they might not be as nice. Friendly staff, helped with bikes, wifi, directions... Rooms are nice an big, clean and very comfy.

We only stayed for one night, but wish it could have been more. To throw open the window and see the majestic mountains, just wonderful. I would say it was the friendliest staff in all of Italy. They even had a computer in the lobby for guests to check email. Beautiful dining room where he had a lovely breakfast and dinner.

This hotel is one of the most comfortable places I've ever stayed in Italy, period. That's how a one night stay became ten - it's just so nice you don't want to leave. If you're visiting Lucca, and there's a dozen reasons to make Lucca a base for exploring the area, stay here!
- Big, quiet rooms
- Really, Really nice staff
- Good location, near but not in city, 30 min walk, free plentiful parking
- Great breakfust buffet with excellent staff
- Free wifi in rooms
- An incredible restaurant onsite, very good value, creative, delicious, and more terrific staff.
The very best Best Western we've ever seen (and we've seen some good ones).

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back to see the hills, or one inside the "H" for less road noise. Th...

We stayed for one night at this hotel. Our room overlooked a soccer field, homes and mountains. It was cool and pleasant here and we were able to open the window. The bathroom was good size and very clean. We had plenty of electrical outlets and all the lights worked.
The breakfast was a buffet breakfast for our tour group. We had croissants with butter and jam, cold cereals, scrambled eggs, sausages, cold cuts, crusty bread, coffee and tea, milk and assorted fresh and prepared fruits. All very good and in a lovely dining room.
There is a fitness center here but no pool. We were out of the city but our tour bus took us to the evening dinner and the sites in the city.
This hotel is part of the Best Western Chain and exceded my expectations. I am not able to give a rating on the value or the cost of the breakfast because it was included in the tour.

Stayed two nights to visit Lucca and Pizza.

The room and bathroom were a good size, modern and clean. This is about the only good thing about the hotel (except it has parking). Our room looked onto another room (H shape building so room was dark and a bit depressing because of this).

It is too far out of Lucca to walk into the town and there is nothing nice near the hotel. There is no outside sitting area except two sunbeds in a very small walled area on the rooftop, not exactly good for a hotel this size.

We ate in the hotel the first night but it was a big room with no atmosphere and the service was poor. Food was ok but nothing special and not an experience we wanted to repeat on the second night. Breakfast was also ok but fairly bland, more volume than quality.

All in all it is a hotel for business travellers I would say, who just want a good standard of room to sleep in for the night - not one with anything else to make it attractive to tourists. The other areas are all a bit dark and dated.

Room Tip: Not sure there are any with a good view.....maybe at the back?

We, a family of four, stopped here on an overnight stop in August 2012, on our way back up to Monaco from Rome. The hotel itself is not technically in Lucca, as it is on the outskirts, just outside the town sign boundary. On the outside the building looks a little dated, with pseudo Moorish architecture. However, inside, the hotel is very nice and spacious with a dedicated reception area and a separate bar area. Although there is WiFi throughout the building, there is a public computer and printer in the reception area, if you need to run of any documents, such as boarding passes, etc.

Checking in at reception was a breeze with the receptionists speaking both Italian and English (to a good standard). As other reviewers have stated, this hotel appears to have a deal with a far east tour company, as there was a coach load of tourists from Hong Kong checking in, just after us. However, this didn't affect the check in process, as I believe that the tour guide does this en mass.

The very spacious family room that we booked was excellent and was fitted to a fairly high standard. Two separate rooms with a spacious toilet/bathroom. The main bedroom had a double bed, fitted wardrobes and a flat screen TV. The other room had two single beds, wardrobes, a flat screen TV and a dinning table and chairs. There was also a coffee making facility in the room. Also, a big plus when visiting Italy in August, the Air Con was good.

Our hotel deal included a buffet breakfast, which was very good. A wide selection of savory and sweet items and coffee adhoc (just tell the barrister what type of coffee you require and they will prepare it fresh). Tea and other beverages are self service.

With regards to visiting Lucca (the walled city area), it is quite a long way to walk. Therefore, I suggest that you either drive your car to the outskirts of the first city wall and park up (free after a certain time), or you take a taxi. The drive to the city centre is one straight main road, so you shouldn't get lost. Once within the walled city, you can hire a cycle for a small fee and actually cycle around the outer city wall (as well as anywhere else in the city). Cycling and walking really are the best way to get around this beautiful part of Tuscany.

In Conclusion: We found this hotel to be excellent value and would definitely stay here again. In fact, out of all the places we stayed in Italy and France this summer holiday, this hotel was our children's favorite (probably due to spaciousness of the rooms, beats Novotel any day...)

With regards to Lucca, it is a hidden gem. Everybody talks about Florence, Pisa and Siena. However, you must visit Lucca. It is a charming beautiful town.
