“Just what you would expect to find in Tuscany”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

A beautiful country villa reached via a long drive and surrounded by olive trees and cypressa (hope that's right). Lovely large rooms with old/antique furniture, comfortable beds and ensuite shower rooms.

Great staff and a lovely simple swimming pool that never seems to get crowded.

Breakfast is good, but lacks in healthy options, other than a few apples and the occasional Kiwi fruit. Definitely not a dieters delight.

Resident cat with a few friendly dogs roaming about.

No modern amenities . . everything in keeping with the age of the villa. No tea or coffee facilities in the room, but fridge supplied. Rubbish hairdryer, so take your own if you take pride in your appearance/hair.

Across the very busy/dangerous road is a cafe/galateria - Perla, which provides cold, hot and alcoholic beverages.

Lovely.

Last year we stayed in the separate building. This year we were in the main building and we think our room was more comfortable and modern in comparison. This is a quiet hotel, it has a nice pool area (and 2 resident cats and a dog). The staff have always been pleasant and helpful. The breakfast supplied is adequate, nothing too exciting.

Hi

We spend our holiday here from july 17th-24th and we had a very lovely stay.

At first we were a little disappointed about getting a room on the top floor due to the heat and missing light from the small rooftop window. This was no problem at all, as the air condition was very effective and during the day you would have to close the window anyway due to sun and in the evening due to mosquitoes - so the top floor rooms are just excellent.
The cleaning lady did a very good job, though on top of the closet it could need some dusting, but in general we was very pleased with the cleaning of the room and new towels almost every day. Don't know if it had something to do with tips :)

Pool area is also very good, and has a good size as well. You can borrow towels at the fee of 3€. Very refreshing water without too much chlorine in it, so also child friendly that way.

Refreshments can be bought in the reception during the day, and you can just charge your room for it - very handy when staying at the pool and doesn't carry cash.

The free internet was ok, but we had problems connection to it at times, but we found out the routers had to be restarted once in a while for us to be able to connect to it, so we powercycled them - so it might be an idea for the staff to power cycle the routers on the different floors once each day.

Prior to our stay at this place, we had 4 days in rome, and along with various restaurants in Lucca, the food at villa Cheli was a very pleasant surprise.During the 7 days in Lucca, we had dinner 3 times at Villa Cheli, because it was an excellent meal. In fact it was some of the best food we had on our 10 day trip in Italy. Do yourself a favor and taste the house wine from Monte Carlo - it is very good for the price, Can't remember if it was 9 or 12€ a bottle, doesn't matter, I think it tasted great.

You need a car to stay here, as there's a long way into town and a road with heavy traffic - so would not be safe to walk into town. If you are staying during lunch time, there's a small sandwich cafe and ice cream bar just down the main road from the Villa - you can walk here, no problem.

All in all, we was very satisfied with this place - it is in wonderful surroundings, good food, friendly staff, nice and clean, we will be coming back the next time we are in the area.

My family and I stayed 3 nights at Villa Cheli. We had twin rooms (no151 over looking the pool and 153 over looking the drive) both had lovely views with rolling hills.
We arrived quite late the first night so grabbed a slice of pizza, ice cream and some red wine from the gelato bar at the end of the drive. This then became the last stop before bed every night as the ice cream from here was simply the best. The red wine was good also and excellent value.

The rooms are a good size at Villa Cheli with en-suite bathrooms with shower and also with a fridge and safe in the room. They have wooden shutters on the windows too which will give you total black out at night. The rooms are cleaned everyday with fresh towels. Pool towels are available from reception.

Breakfast is a continental buffet style which is more than enough to get you ready for your day ahead. If you choose to spend the day by the pool there is lots of space and is a lovely area.

The reception staff are fantastic and very helpful with suggestions about places to visit. Lucca is literally 10 minute drive away and was one of my highlights of Tuscany.

We ate at Villa Cheli on the last night. The food was ok, a few choices. | order the trofie pesto (we ate at Il Castello in Monterosso the night before which was amazing so very hard to compare the same meal against this) but the pancetta was out of this world, the wine was good and service was also very good.

Villa Cheli is a very good base to travel but you will need a car to explore.

First thing: if you don´t have a car, stay in Lucca downton. I came across this place because hotels in Pisa were crowded and it was an absolute surprise. Please don´t expect luxury, well trained staff and perfect service. You´re in countryside Italy (and anyway, if you fancy about knowing Tuscany it´s probably the countryside you´re thinking about). That said, the only room left was an ´appartment´ in the annex building, not in the villa. Well, for 80 euros, it was just perfect value for money. Simple and clean (and with a small kitchen). No need to pay more than this. The food also surprised me: we had a marvelous dinner (menu dinner), with several courses and wine included, for only 30 euros. Also you can eat out at night in Lucca, and walk around the old city. I did this also, but I ate much more and much better at the hotel. But the best thing was the location. Lucca is a short 4 km drive and it´s really enchanting. And you can drive from here to Pisa, Viareggio, Carrara, San Gimignano, Florence, etc for a day trip and then back to the hotel (easy access to the highway from the hotel). That means, you can stay for one week, without spending much and enjoying all the Tuscany. I think everybody made good comments about this place, so I will not extend much. If you like driving and exploring, use this place as a base for knowing Tuscany. It´s probably much better than staying in downtown Pisa or Florence. Else, if countryside is not your cup of tea, and instead you prefer museums and works of art, ok, stay in Florence.

After trying to give us a room in the attic with no real window, we got a big room on the first floor with one large door...the window. Very clean room with extra single bed. Bathroom tiny, water pressure for the shower(if you can fit) was really limited . Don't try to wash your hair!
Staff very nice and helpful. It rained the whole time, sadly so Pisa was hard in the wet. Breakfast and Internet access...both weak.
Location would be nicer in the summer as the pool terrace is lovely.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room with windows of the mountain.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hello everybody! I am the owner of Hotel Ristorante Villa Cheli and my name is Vincent. Today I decided to write a review to tell a little bit of our house .. Villa Cheli is a colonial villa built in 1700 , formerly owned by the family Cheli . The last owner was a sculptor , a sculptor of chalk. During the restoration , in fact , we found some of his works in the attic .. And we thought .. Why not share it with our guests ? Coming to visit us in fact you can admire them within the walls (internal and external ) of the Villa .. A bit ' as we were in a museum. The hotel rooms are located on three floors .. The first floor, the main floor of the Villa, are situated the suite and two rooms overlooking the balcony .. The second floor rooms with large windows and high ceilings on the third floor .. Instead there are the most romantic rooms with sloping roof with exposed beams and small skylights in the ceiling. On the ground floor, in addition to the reception, we have our own restaurant, open for the summer season , from March to November , that in addition to the typical dishes of Italian cuisine in general , it also offers some taste of the Tuscan tradition and Lucca. And for relaxation ? Do not miss our pool and our wellness area! All the staff and me we will be happy to welcome you in the warmest way possible and help you with all your needs ... more   less
