My wife and I have enjoyed visiting Alle Camelie once or twice a year every year since 2001, so altogether we have spent more than 20 times there. We have also brought friends and family many times, and several of them have enjoyed it so much that they have come with us more than once.

We have always stayed in the Bed & Breakfast part of the farm because we think that the delicious breakfasts and the contact they provide with the staff and other guests are a significant part of the experience. The rooms are comfortable and have a rustic charm. We also appreciate (particularly when we are there with a group) the comfortable sitting room with a kitchenette. Also the large swimming pool With adjacent pergola is a boon on hot days.

The location in the foothills just south of the beautiful city of Lucca (15 minutes by car) is perfect, and the area offers great opportunities for walks on well-marked trails in the hills and nearby villages. The views of the surrounding area are stunning and here you are really away from the tourist crowds. Lucca is a true gem, and as it is normally not swamped by tourists, we enjoy the sights and just walking in the narrow, quiet streets of the inner city or renting bikes and biking around the city on top of the intact city wall (about 4 km). From Alle Camelie you can take day trips to all major tourist attractions of Tuscany as they are within easy driving distance on good roads.

Alle Camelie is situated in a tiny medieval village, but there are three local restaurants (two within easy walking distance) offering a wide choice of excellent meals, and within a 15 minute drive there is at least a dozen good / very good restaurants (we keep discovering new ones all the time). The staff at Alle Camelie will be happy to give good advice here! There are also two local grocery stores with practically all you need within walking distance, but the nearest supermarket is 10 minutes away by car.

We have definitely fallen in love with Alle Camelie and will keep returning to this beautiful, charming and pleasant place in the years to come!

Room Tip: The four rooms in the Bed & Breakfast part are all charming but different; two have twin beds an...

We rented one of the self catering units - the Farmhouse - for two weeks in June 08. It has 4 bedrooms, two double, two wingle, each with an en suite. In addition there is an eat-in kitchen and a sitting room. There were four adults in our party (my husband and I, our daughter and son-in-law) and a 10 month old granddaughter.
Alle Camelie is an Agriturismo and is run by Augusto Orsi and his wife Inge. (Inge is German and a real linguist! She speaks German, Italian and English really well and Augusto speaks French and Italian.) The welcome we received was amazing. Prior to our arrival I had had lots of questions about the equipment of the house, since we live only 5 hours drive away in southern Switzerland, and I could bring "essentials" with me. Inge replied quickly and with very accurate information. In addition to the two self-catering units there are 8 double B&B rooms, all with access to a shared, large and cheerful sitting/eating area and kitchenette. In addition there is a shared swimming pool for everyone.
This is truly a farm. They have loads of olive trees and make their own oil which they sell to shops and hotels in Lucca. In addition they make their own San Giovese wine, which is very nice indeed. They also raise Camelias for sale and have many varieties growing around the property. They have also many rare species of bushes and trees, all carefully labelled with lots of information on the plant concerned. The entire place is just beautiful! There are little, private sitting areas dotted about the hillside, and everyone is welcome to use them.
The onyl drawback for us was the lack of air conditioning during a very hot spell.
The farm is an easy 20 minute drive from the Porta Elisa in the old town of Lucca. Simple to pop in and out. For those self-catering, or wanting to make a simple meal int he shared kitchen, there is a good little supermarket 11 minutes away, and an excellent mini-market with local products 2 minutes down the road. You are allowed to do laundry at the farm (3Euros/load) from Monday to Thursday inclusive. However we found a super lavanderia in Capannori, en route to Lucca and just beyond the autostrada to Florence. They washed, dried and folded the laundry for us!
Alle Camelie is about 40 minutes from the coast (Viareggio) and about 1 hours from the centre of Florence - both by car. You need a car to get to the farm.
We loved our stay with Inge and Augusto, who are very, very hospitable (Augusto brought us courgettes from the garden every day and we enjoyed the "fiori fritti" as a result. We were also told not to hesitate to pick basil or parsely or any of the other herbs growing around the farm as well as to help ourselves to the lemons and oranges at our door!!

  • Liked — The beauty of the farm, its tranquility, and the lovely views
  • Disliked — No air conditioing!
