“You get what you pay for.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

We stayed here for 1 night in early September 2013 and I think it was our worst hotel experience to date. Firstly it was almost impossible to find even with a good GPS - the signage wasn't obvious. Parking around the area was also difficult.

Once we arrived, the room situation wasn't much better. We had a private room at the end of the corridor and to access the weak wifi connection we had to push a chair right up to the door. The bed was awful - we could feel the individual springs and it was as though there was no padding at all. The shower wasn't an improvement either, and breakfast the following morning was also very strange. Suffice to say we were relieved to check out.

The host however was very friendly and nice.

Memory foam mattresses and acquagel, the springs are non-existent in our mattresses! We can not understand but 'how it is that we be given a negative evaluation of this thing is nothing short of incoherent and senseless. Remember that behind a service, there is always a lot of work for people who do their utmost to make guests' stay enjoyable. Review a little more balanced and less incoherent, certainly not positive that it had been, we would have certainly helped to improve. Having said that we are the first to be spiaciuti that things are not going well for her. However I urge all visitors to view the photos exhaustive which highlights the "real" aspect of the "rooms" The sheets are made of 100% cotton or monteverdi Bassetti. Breakfast defined by you very strange is made for two people from Coffee, Tea, green tea Cappuccino Croissant four flavors to choose, 2 packs per serving biscuits Mulino Bianco; 3 Gusti jams and chocolate nutella, 2 juices to choose from: pear, peach, ace, apricot, or alternatively the lemon or fishing; all it served by h. 5:00 am to 11:00. If it seems a very strange breakfast you are confused with another hotel! "Best Regards
Thank you for saying at the end of all his honest review:
The landlord, however, was very friendly and nice and will welcome you with open arms as always. Thank you.

The Albergo Houston is a small bed & breakfast that is conveniently located near the centre and the train station of Livorno. We had asked for a room with shared bathroom. Upon arrival in the hotel, the friendly hostess told us she'd given us a free upgrade to a room with private bathroom! The room was nice and clean and seemed newly refurbished. We mentioned wanting to go to Lucca to the hostess but didn't go further into it. However, the same night we returned to the hotel, the receptionist had written down the train schedule for us to go to Lucca the next morning. An unexpected extra service that we greatly appreciated! It's wonderful when you get a personal treatment like this...

Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement! We enjoyed having you stay with us and you were awesome guests! As the owner/operator, I traveled a lot when I lived in the states. What I am trying to do here, is give my guests the same courtesy and respect that I expect when I travel. We will try and improve our services as we progress so hopefully if you ever come back, your experience will be even better!

Livorno is a good city to base oneself for travel to other nearby cities, as well as a good city to explore on its own. Hotel Houston albergo is a great alternative to higher-priced hotels. While it may not have the amenities of a 5-star hotel, it's definitely top-notch in terms of budget accommodation.

The owners use hygienic sheets on its beds & pillows, ensuring good hygiene & cleanliness, in addition to regular cleaning (sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, etc.). The artistic/artsy yet simple decor makes one feel welcome, at home, comfortable upon walking in, providing an extra incentive to creative/artist types. Small meals/snacks are provided at extra (cheap) cost, and there's a hot drink machine in reception. A little store right downstairs (turn right upon walking outside) provides cheap food/snacks, and restaurants & pasticcerias abound in the area. Wi-fi is available, and there are small TVs attached to the walls in each room. Rooms don't have telephones, but with all of the exploring you'll be doing, you likely won't need one. Because the albergo is on a busy street, it can get a bit noisy during the day; closing your windows will not eliminate the noise, but it'll decrease the noise.

In sum, this accommodation can appeal to different travelers seeking a budget-friendly, clean, and simple place to rest one's head at any time of the year.

Bonus tip: avoid dining in the pizzeria next door (to the left of and attached to the hotel). Food is an art in Italy; unfortunately, the pizzeria next door hasn't mastered that art at all.

Thank you for the wonderful review! We enjoyed having you as a guest! Hopefully you will come back in the near future, as we are in the process of expanding our services. Personally, I am sorry about your experience at the restaurant next door to us. We aren't affiliated with that company but as a result of your experience, we have put together a list of the best and friendliest restaurants that are within walking distance, as well as those who provide delivery to the hotel. Once again thank you!
