“Delightful Retreat - Florence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

Once again, we spent a few days in this beautiful ex Convent with it's magnificent views over Florence. Beatrice and the family always make their guests so welcome. We all keep coming back.
The whole environment is charming old fashioned Italian hospitality at it's best and you will be sure to meet interesting people from around the world.

Highly recommended

LOCATION & FACILITIES:
4/5: Depends what you’re looking for, but it’s in a peaceful location actually well out of Fiesole. This family-run hotel is a beautiful old villa, and has quite a grand aura. Well-kept grounds, with simply stunning views of Florence in the distance.

SERVICE:
4/5: The owners, reception and restaurant staff were all very pleasant and helpful.

ROOMS:
3 ½ /5: Spacious, clean and traditionally decorated, with nice bathroom and walk-in shower.

RESTAURANT:
3/5: Breakfast was a smallish Italian selection of fresh fruits, cereals, rolls, cheese, cold meats.
Dinner was a take-it-or-leave-it one choice per course menu! To be honest, not what we had expected, but adequate.

SUMMARY:
We were on a short-break walking holiday with Inntravel, so thoroughly enjoyed the scenery as we walked from Olmo, and then on the next day to Florence.
This hotel is obviously well thought of by a huge number of guests, as their tales in the hotel’s Guest book show, however I’m not sure we “got” it.
Perfectly fine for a 1-night stop, but I’m not sure we would’ve lingered longer, even if we had the option!

Dear Guest,
we are very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us.
Bencistà is a family owned and run “pensione” where our guests are meant to feel at home, this to us is the most important thing.
Regarding your personal experience, we welcome travelers of all ages, singles, couples and families from around the world.
Obviously ,we also regret your friend’s experience. With a piano at our guests disposal, we very much welcome concert evenings, however for the peace of all, after ten o’clock Music cannot be imposed on the other guests.
Sorry again for all inconvenience
Best regards
Beatrice

My husband has visited the Bencista many times while working in Florence. However, this was only my second visit and the first with our son - aged 7. Everyone was as charming and welcoming as on my first visit in 2001. The weather was lovely, warm but not too hot. The dinners we had there were excellent.

It is a beautiful location and being family run is a big plus making the place feel very friendly but at the same time very professional.

One slightly unexpected difference from the previous visit. There was a passageway through a gate and up some cobbles that made getting to the bus stop a bit less hairy but it is not now in use.

This year the food at the Bencistà was better than ever. Fresh home made pasta as a starter for Dinner. Twice we enjoyed a mouthwatering Bistecca alla Fiorentina from Chianina cattle, served on a bed of rugghetta/rucola. The wines were good and very reasonably priced. We were delighted to see Anna given an award for tourism.

Drinks on the terrace before dinner are as ever good; as a change I recommend a Campari alla Maria (ie. tonic not soda water).

The service was as ever excellent - a real sense of staff dedicated to helping you enjoy your holiday.

We plan to return to the Bencistà later in the year.

A friend highly recommended Pensone Bencista, for its relaxing, elegant, old-world charm, and its view of Florence in the valley below. We found it an ideal "near retreat" just a few minutes away from the throng of tourists (like us!) down in the middle of Florence. The room was charming and elegantly homy; we had a top floor view of all of Florence spread out before us, and it's worth aiming for the "view-iest" room available (the terrace also provides a very airy and open view of Florence). The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and it definitely felt as if a treasured family estate was being shared with valued guests. We had breakfasts and two dinners here, and enjoyed all of the food as first-rate. We look forward to our next visit to Firenze, Fiesole, and Pension Bencista!

You are transported to old world Italy, the way people liked to have been treated long ago. The front desk and various service people are all from one family or have been working there forever and they are helpful, charming, and sweet. The room was very average but we did not spend much time in the room. The terrace with views of Florence was the gathering place. We stayed for dinner all three nights, first because we were carless and taking the bus to the city at night was a hassle but later because the food was delicious and the service gracious (and the house wine good). A few negatives... its a long way up the hill to the main road to catch the bus. Luckily, someone from the hotel was nice enough to drive us a couple of times. Rooms are small. bed could have been softer, TV in the room anyone? All in all - I strongly recommend this place for a great vacation experience.

Our Italy consultant, Linda Vogan of T'Amo Italia, booked all our hotels in Italy. And this one was another charmer! Beautiful location in the hills of Fiesole overlooking Florence. Quiet, serene, wonderful rooms, gorgeous views, great food, great service. The bus is an uphill walk (and I do mean uphill) but a 15-20 ride to downtown Florence. We enjoyed our trips to Florence but were grateful to have the peace and quiet of a beautiful 14th century villa! Amazing place!
