“Old world charm and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

You are transported to old world Italy, the way people liked to have been treated long ago. The front desk and various service people are all from one family or have been working there forever and they are helpful, charming, and sweet. The room was very average but we did not spend much time in the room. The terrace with views of Florence was the gathering place. We stayed for dinner all three nights, first because we were carless and taking the bus to the city at night was a hassle but later because the food was delicious and the service gracious (and the house wine good). A few negatives... its a long way up the hill to the main road to catch the bus. Luckily, someone from the hotel was nice enough to drive us a couple of times. Rooms are small. bed could have been softer, TV in the room anyone? All in all - I strongly recommend this place for a great vacation experience.

Our Italy consultant, Linda Vogan of T'Amo Italia, booked all our hotels in Italy. And this one was another charmer! Beautiful location in the hills of Fiesole overlooking Florence. Quiet, serene, wonderful rooms, gorgeous views, great food, great service. The bus is an uphill walk (and I do mean uphill) but a 15-20 ride to downtown Florence. We enjoyed our trips to Florence but were grateful to have the peace and quiet of a beautiful 14th century villa! Amazing place!

I have lived in florence for over 6 years and my wife and I have been here many times for aperi-cena (mix between hors d'oeuvres and dinner) or for a special organized lunch, and all visits left the same imprssions: that the food was first class, the staff was genuinely interested in their guests' experiences, and the view/ambiance was icing on the cake.
For aperi-cena call a day or two in advance to reserve. Like us, you will return again and again!

My wife raved so much about this place when she came back from staying here last year that it seemed a must return for her or I was in trouble. She worried I might find it dated or too quiet but she should have had no fears. From the moment I contacted them initially to book till the time we left their homely hotel I could not have been more smitten by the friendliness and charm of this family run house. And I mean family run; three generations and the dogs all played their part in making you feel at home.

It is olde worlde but then it is a over 500 years old but it has 21st century add-ons to the other add-ons acquired in the intervening time all well integrated into the package.

The setting is a hillside just north of Florence with an unrestricted view of Florence and the famous Duomo (see photos). The grounds around the house are not at their best at the moment but it was still quite wintery when we visited but the care and attention they got suggests they will be a wonderful sight in a couple of months.

The is a lift to the bedrooms (and down to the diningroom). The rooms are all quite individual with no formulaic commonality of a modern hotel. Ours had a view over the hills to the north which looked spectacular in the morning sunshine.

The double bed was huge and very comfortable and the setting was very peaceful. There was an additional single bed. The furniture was very much in keeping with a house of this grandeur and the clothes storage was ample for all your clobber including all we had left at home. The room and bathroom had a high ceiling and the bathroom was illuminated by a large skylight. The bath was a good size even for me at 183 cm and the shower over it also worked, though there was no shower screen/curtain. The was a power point but no razor socket. The towels were fresh and thick. There was no TV in the room but that is no loss.

The public rooms were interesting and varied; one had a grand piano, another a computer for guests use, another a quite seating area around a fire with a view over Florence. There were ample books available in many languages to read and refreshments were readily available at all times. There was also free WiFi.

What really makes this place so wonderful is the family that run it. There is a lovely photograph near the reception desk of them all and we recognised many of them as those who had worked to hard to make our stay so pleasant. All were very civil and made everyone feel so welcome without ever being intrusive. No request went unfulfilled and no detail forgotten. The dinners and breakfasts were delightful and the value for money was very good. They also spoke excellent English.

It is clearly a place that is popular with people that return again and again and we very much hope to have that opportunity. Its like returning to see your best friend.

Our stay at Pensione Bencista was many years ago. I wanted to refer it to friends planning a trip to Florence. Checking out Trip Advisor to see if it was still in operation. So happy to read all these great reviews. This is what you want when traveling to Italy. Rome and Florence are so noisy and congested now. I would definitely stay outside all big Itialian cities now and day trip in. Venice stay on the Brenta Riviera. Bus direct to Piazza Roma. Trip advisors you rock! Great reviews of one of my favorite places ever to stay. Thanks.

We stayed at the Pensione Bencista in late September while attending a wedding. After flinging open my wood shuttered windows to a spectacular view of rolling hills, olive groves and Florence in the distance, all I kept saying was WOW! Bencista is a warm and inviting family run business. I felt like I could have just stayed and explored all the various sitting rooms and stairways and nooks and crannies for days. The decor is perfect, the food is authentic and delicious and all of the staff were attentive and accomodating with any requests we had. The rooms were all unique and had varying features. Wi-Fi was available but the signal wasn't always easy to find/keep. The rooms were clean and spacious. The bed was a little on the 'firm' side for my tastes and was low to the ground and moved easily on the wood floor, but it did not hamper the enjoyment of my stay. This is not a chain type hotel and you will not find a flat screen TV, mini bar or coffee maker in your room. It is quiet, rural, and absolutely charming. Aside from day trips into Florence, the lovely Etruscan town of Fiesole is just up the road and worth going to see. There's a small market there on Saturday mornings, as well as an interesting archeological museum and church. We walked there once, but I would recommend taking the 5 minute bus ride instead, as the road is narrow, steep and has no sidewalks.
I loved my stay at Pensione Bencista and happily recommend it!

This is the place I dream about all year round! Imagine a wisteria -covered terrace overlooking the hills of Florence, sipping perhaps a glass of chilled Prosecco before a leisurely homemade dinner. Followed by the best night's sleep in a country house style bedroom - lovely cosy chintz and antique furnishings. Add the warm and friendly owners, the beautiful gardens - and the next day, Florence - this is paradise!
